Don't bait the bear. That was how the saying went. So why Marcus kept going to the haunted house, tempting fate, was not a thing he had particularly chosen for himself. One didn't question missions handed to them, but even he had to wonder why he kept being told to make the rounds. Yes, it was too unsafe for trainees. No, it wasn't easy for him.

Dis as his light, the faint blue lit up a surprising amount of the nearby woodsy area just outside of the house, the borders of halloween. He kept scanning the tree's edge, trying to see if anyone, or anything, was going to come out and attack or like most days, there would be nothing at all.

The fog worked to his advantage. While the trees were dead and the snow was blinding, the concealment allowed him to be pressed to the trunk in dark leather and, if still enough, pass as part of the tree. Stealth was not Shik's strong suit, but waiting for the midget sacrifice had taught him at least a semblance of how to be patient.

At least until the next target was available.

Once the hunter passed by, he moved. With the sound of wind through feathers, Shik took to the air and dove down to greet his guest with a fly by swipe.

"Taller than the last one at least," he said conversationally. "Though this human fad for white hair is, frankly, bizarre. I could pick you out much too easily." Sigh.

Marcus didn't see the Shik shank coming until he felt it. Dis huffed thjat he'd not been paying too close attention and apologized, but not before the runes flared up, brighter than before.

Marcus just realized he'd had his hair commented on.

Marcus scowled and with 10 years of middle and highschool teen issue over his hair do he replied: "Sorry that white hair is what happens when you don't have pigmentation cells."

He didn't even think about what he'd said, the reaction simple an old, old habit having gone unused.

That aside, his bland swung out as the hunter pulled back, aiming to get a better footing.

"Better white hair than hipster hair."

If Shik had any idea what a hipster was, this probably would have been more offensive. Maybe he was so underground, not even the hipsters could reach him.

Clipped by its weapon, he darted away back into a tree, smirking down at the hunter. "A defect, then. No-one will miss you," he all but purred. "Though you hunters should learn never to come alone."

The next time Shik dove down, his figure blurred into that of a grizzle bear, all teeth and claws and gleaming eyes.

Hipster before their were hipsters. The pre-hipster era.

Damn ponies were old.

"Sorry, my bad. I'll explain." His blade came down only to be pulled away quickly as he saw the change begin and the pony turn into a bear. "I got burned and I lived. Now I'm about to be mauled by a bear. You damn horsemen need to actually be horses for once jesus christ."

To be sure there probably would have been a very witty comment, because Shik assuredly was the wittiest of them all and he loved a good battle-talk now and then while fighting. He was, however, a bear at the time. This meant he had much more pressing priorities.

Like mauling the s**t out of the meatstick's shield. Shik was relentless in his attacks and used his weight to his advantage to try and keep the hunter off balance and unstable. There was a wicked gleam in the creature's eyes, however, that lied beyond simple repartee. After all, the only thing more delicious than defeating the white coat would be to tear a piece of him off and force him to watch it be eaten.

As Kat could attest, he liked to leave his marks of victory, one way or another.

There was a flare inside his head. That part of Dis that would come alive and tell him of something Marcus might have missed.

Flesh eater, feral, focused- Dis was willing Marcus to distance himself. Unlike the others, this one would take true pleasure in his death. This was a horseman who would drink his blood, grind his bones, eat the meat and leave nothing behind.

It was a monster.
It was what was to be feared.

The look and Dis's warning had Marcus stiffen, the attack knocking him back and doing far more damage than he'd anticipated.

What was worse was knowing that soon, if he wasn't as careful or Dis's focus shifted to narrowly, something would be exposed. Something would be hurt.

Badly.

Swallowing nervousness that raced into his heart, Marcus swung out, the curved blade cutting air as blue runes cast faint shadows on them both.

If a bear was capable of laughter, then that was the classification of the noise that left him as the weapon cut into his shield: raucous, maniacal laughter. Shik was a horseman of War, and perhaps the most gruesome collection of its darker, base traits at best. Resistance did not irk him in the least; he welcomed the white coat's attempts to fend him off because he knew, in the end, that he was in control. Struggle, desperation, vigor and violence, battle cries and beating hearts, the taste of metal that could have come from blood or blade--those were his elements. Ah, it had been far, far too long since he had a proper blood bath.

And that was exactly his aim with this one. When Shik had told him that he had been a fool to come alone, he meant to back up those words and more. As a horseman he could have entertained his prey with further bickering, the squabble being like spices to enrich his meal. As a bear, he was enticed only by the idea that the faster he tore the shield away, the faster he could feast. The hungry gleam in Shik's eyes grew brighter, the very idea causing spittle to fly from his maw.

He was no reaper: there was no weapon summoned to signal his Fear charge. One moment Marcus was simply being assaulted by tooth and claw. The next, they were aflame. Roaring a war cry, the grizzly bore down on the hunter with renewed, hellish intent.

His was a call for fire and blood, and he was not going to be denied so easily.

There was a large part of Marcus that just willed himself to think a certain way. To act in a certain way. That walled himself off and see things in what he thought would ultimately be more useful than hindrance. Pride was not one of these things. Marcus was proud. He was arrogant and he was deeply, deeply judgmental of others. He knew these things of himself, he tried to mitigate how he displayed these feelings but they often didn't go according to his plans.

Thinking he might still be able to fight a second horseman after fighting the first had been a mistake. A mistake of his power and his own abilities and judgement.

Fangs and claws were nothing new, yet when the flames began?

Fear began to flow. he could feel heat near his face and the small, old and dark memory burned fresh in his mind.
Yet when it bore down his side, down his neck and chest and arm and leg, Marcus screamed at it torn away at his only defense. It wasn't a scream of pure terror so much as a scream to survive. Of the need to escape a threat. Of a need to just hold on for a while longer.

Clutching the medallion and whispering the phrase to be taken back to the island, Marcus vaguely could feel pain, could feel that sense of wrong. That he'd been hurt- yet he didn't know how badly. He didn't look. He didn't want to know.

Not yet. Not until he was safe.
