Ami had instructed the twosome as follows; Lex would take the point, while Evan would take the rear. Meanwhile, Ami would walk parallel to them, wearing her measly trainee coat, and looking quite hopeless.
This was the hard part, because Ami was anything but helpless. She took a deep breath and let her mind go to a scarier place. The rusty bars of a horsemen encampment, the tortured halls of her mind that she chose to lock away.
"Hello? Is anybody there?" she called, her voice surprisingly broken and nothing at all like her normal monotonous, stressed voice. "Um ... h-hello?"

He didn't want to be in the Haunted House.
It was a terrifying place, filled with humans who would try to kill him and rooms that would try to terrorize him, and yet the Haunted House was exactly where Xavier Hollow found himself, his coat clutched around his chest with shaking, clawed fingers, feathers falling freely from his hair as he scuttled this way and that, desperately looking for an exit.
He tried to emulate Hel and her advice about being stronger than he felt, remembered the way she had smacked the sense into him (literally), and stood up just a tiny bit straighter. He opened a door, found nothing but smoke, and closed it again, because that was clearly not the exit.
Xavier wandered own another hallway and heard a voice.
At first, he gave a little, muffled squeak (he'd clapped a hand over his mouth to stifle the sound); but then, after a moment, he inched down the hallway a little more. The voice sounded somewhat like Solia's; quiet and uncertain, slightly trembling with emotion, and maybe it was Solia; maybe she was hurt.
Humans are bad, his mind told him, but he could still see Solia's sad expression in his mind, her despondent voice. Xavier shuffled a bit more down the hallway and peered hesitantly around the corner, his heart in his throat.
"H...hello?" he called out, his voice barely above a whisper.inle-roo look evan ur favorite wimpy demon is back

Ami's eyes spotted one. Horns- that was a good sign. She'd read that many had horns. "Um ... s-sir?" she asked. "Are you lost too?"
She felt so gross acting all weak and dependent. After this she was going to need a looong shower.

He spotted her, just a short distance away, and it was not Solia, which made him afraid; but at the same time, she looked so scared and vulnerable that it made some of the fear ebb, just a little. Her coat was clearly not the fancier ones of the older, more experienced hunters, which was a good sign. Maybe this human would be like Solia after all, and not like the other one.
Xavier eased closer slowly, keeping himself pressed against the wall of the hallway.
"I, erm...yes," he stammered. "A-are you, erm...okay?"

Ami's face broke out into that of (very fake) relief. "Oh!" she exclaimed, moving closer to him very quickly and innocently, trying not to vomit at the sight of his (what she assumed were) decaying sclera and odd feathered hair.
"My name is Mary! Do you have a name? Perhaps we can find our way out together!" she clapped, as though she wanted nothing more in the world than to accompany Xavier out of the haunted house. "If ... if that's okay I mean."

Xavier remained where he was, though some of the fear seemed to have ebbed a little more away. He took a hesitant step towards her, and then another, curling his clawed fingers against his palms.
"I-I think it, um...is th-that way," he said, gesturing shakily to his left. "B-but, erm, I c-can g-go with y-you, I w-want to g-get out of here too."
Maybe it would be easier and faster with a second pair of eyes.

Lex took orders well enough, taking point until Ami set up the trap and began her act of the helpless woman. Hard grey eyes studied her as she pretended to be something pathetic and sniveling, a facade that she pulled off far too well. Sympathy seeped into his blood at the thought of where she'd gained the experience - and then rage when he connected the dots. Ami wasn't acting - she was recreating. His lips drew a thin line across his face in the dark corner he was crouched in, one hand already on the trap gun.
He heard another voice, a student. He took a small peek at the thing, nostrils flaring. Horns, weird eyes, feather hair. Demon or Monster, for sure. His hands twitched, heart beginning to thump. He wanted to pull the trigger now, get this thing bagged and tagged so they could move on. The possibility of multiple Demons under their thumb excited him, possibly a little too much.
< Calm thyself. >
He slowly breathed out through his nostrils, inaudible. He would wait.

Ami tilted her head slightly, letting her braid fall loosely beside her arm. She could see this creature shaking. It was too easy.
Gently, she took one of his hands in her own and said, "Are you scared? It's okay, shh. We'll get out of here together! After all, there's safety in numbers, right?" She patted his hand (ew god it was so gross it had CLAWS and it was black ugh), and continued, "Are you from um ... from Halloween? I'm a life hunter. We do science to help everyone, even Halloween people like you! We don't do the hunting, we just help people!"
Help people to their demise, more like it. Wide eyes turned to Xavier and she said, "What about you?"

He jumped a little when she took his hand, but after a moment, he settled down, Xavier relaxing enough to start walking. She was trying to soothe him, which was good, and she certainly seemed safe...and she was patting his hand reassuringly, which was also good.
Maybe she was good.
"I - yes," said Xavier, somewhat flustered. His cheeks turned pink. "I'm a - a r-raum demon. I d-didn't know that, erm...h-hunters helped us t-too..."
He trailed off, trying to make sense of this new fact. If that was the case, then Solia had certainly been telling the truth, and there were actually good humans around that were not all like that one human he had encountered. It was now two against one in terms of good encounters versus bad, which meant that he was more inclined to believe the many over the few.
"I-I'm glad to hear t-that there are good h-humans," Xavier mumbled softly, shuffling along. He looked down at the floor. "T-they're...scary...sometimes."

"Oh that's very true, mister," Ami agreed. "Some humans are ... very scary indeed."

Lex heard demon, and his impulse control was out the window. He hated Demons. He was sure that, from childhood, they'd been the ones he'd always seen. He grew up on stories of Demons, the Devil, whatever you wanted to call it. Demons were filth, the epitome of the antagonist. The gun was taken out of the holster in a flash, and Lex whirled out of his corner with the grin of a Southern preacher who'd just made a new convert.
"Very scary, indeed." He chuckled, firing the captrue gun at the Raum with no hesitation. It was too bad, he thought, that these guns didn't come pre-loaded with electric nets.

What little color that had remained in Xavier's face drained from it almost immediately.
There was no where to run. There was no way to run; his legs simply just weren't fast enough or strong enough to carry him out of this place that he was rapidly learning was going to be a death sentence. He was too weak and he knew it.
He had always been too weak.
As the second hunter stepped out, it felt as though the floor had been pulled right out from beneath him and that he was falling, falling, spiraling downwards with no way back up. He had a split second to turn his head towards the female hunter, his eyes wide with terror and sadness -
- and then something shot towards him, and it smacked into him hard, the net expanding around him instantly. Xavier let out a shriek and collapsed to the floor, writhing and twisting and flailing his arms and kicking his legs, but to no avail.
He knew it was useless. A soft, pathetic whimper escaped him, a whisper, barely audible.
"No."

It rankled, a little, to be relegated to the rear guard when his place was on the front lines, but this was Ami's op, so he took his position behind Lex without complaint. Fortunately, it didn't take long for a likely candidate to stumble across Ami. Evan was surprised at how well she played her part; if he hadn't known better, he would have sworn she was the greenest trainee on the island. The voice she was speaking to sounded vaguely familiar, but Evan tended not to pay attention when the monsters were talking. He listened attentively for any sounds of distress on Ami's part--just in case he would have to whoops accidentally kill whatever she had found--but Lex broke before he could find any justification to do so. Evan came out of hiding on Lex's tail, ready to back him up, and was pleased to see what Lex had caught. His face split into a wide, toothy smile at the sight of the little demon he had torn apart not too long ago. "Nice shot, man," he said, clapping Lex on the shoulder. To Ami, he asked, "Can we have this one when you're done with it? We like the way it begs for mercy." kuroopu omg xavier when are you going to learn not to talk to strangers

Ami's bright facade faded the moment she heard the capture gun fire, returning back to her normal sour disposition. She folded down her dress and walked towards the creature, heels clicking as she did so.
"Commendable," she said in response to the shot. That was as close to a compliment as Lex would ever get.
From her pocket she pulled a red pendant, and slowly approached Xavier. "Oh don't whine, I hate whining," she muttered, pulling Xavier up by his hair like a dog and slipping the pendant around his neck. She looked him straight in the eyes and pulled out the matching pendant. Any scrap of the kind trainee was gone, replaced with the cold indifference of Amalie Raine. "Sleep." kuroopu A dark, dull sense of sleepiness overcomes your character, and when they awake, they are somewhere else, far away. Please proceed to this thread!
