[ Heat Stroke ]

Lock had never really concerned himself with healing before. He liked healing, certainly. It was his FEAR and it was what he wanted to specialize himself in, but he'd never done it before and thus had never concerned himself with it. In hindsight he realized that was rather lazy and childish of him, which was why he was taking this strange class-without-a-teacher (certainly only Amity could think up a concept so loony).

The other reason he was here was to ensure that his promise to Shun didn't go unfulfilled. He needed to learn more, needed to bulk up and needed to really train hard if he wanted to impress the alumni reaper. Actually, scratch that. Lock was very certain that Shun would never be legitimately impressed.

Yet there he was nonetheless, standing over a strange sort of FEAR-created dummy, who was apparently suffering from some sort of ailment that he had to fix. Easier said than done.

He leaned over the body, unsure of where he was supposed to start. It was actually rather frustrating that this dummy didn't come with instructions. Then again, he supposed on a battlefield you wouldn't get instructions either. Okay fair enough.

He put his hand on the dummy's forehead, idly checking for a fever (maybe it was sick? Jack if Lock knew). He was surprised to find that the body was boiling hot, and the skin felt unusually dry against his palm. Weren't people who got hot normally supposed to sweat? He supposed if it was a fire demon or a lava monster or something it wouldn't though. Really, he needed more details!!

Lock then put his head on the dummy's chest, listening for a heartbeat. It was erratic, crazy even. What was that supposed to mean?

WHAT DID HE DO? HELP.

Okay, deep breath. Panicking wasn't going to help the dummy at all, and if he couldn't help this dummy, he was going to fail the class.

It was clear that the dummy was hot. He could at least figure that out. He reached over to the nearby supply table and began rummaging around for anything he could find that would even slightly cool the dummy down. Icepacks, wet cloths- he even ran a few cups of water under the tap and poured them on the dummy's head. Lock was VERY new to this whole thing, and his patch up job reflected that. It was a job done by someone with very little experience, but quite a bit of common sense. It was nice to see, at least, that the dummy hadn't exploded or something. With some of the classes and professors here at Amityville, he wouldn't even be surprised anymore.

Lucky for Lock, it seemed like whatever the hell's bells he was doing, it was working. The dummy's temperature was beginning to cool down (was it really cooling down though? Maybe it was just his hand touching it that was getting cold? It was hard to tell).

Unfortunately, he missed some of the key supplies he needed to use. Things like shade for the dummy, as well as a whole bag of ice that went completely unnoticed. Cricket was disappointed, and Lock could feel his own "heat stroke" coming across his face in the form of an awkward blush. He didn't mean to mess up. He half wanted to argue that it wasn't fair to throw in a complete novice, but he also knew that arguing with a professor would only earn him detention. Lock was very keen on not getting detention.

Later Lock came in for a second attempt. He wasn't going to give up just because he had a first bad run. It would be silly to just give up when he wasn't perfect on the first try.

Was it disheartening? Maybe a little. He'd always been told back home that he had a talent for healing, so to fail immediately was a little upsetting. It was hard accepting that he wasn't naturally gifted, and instead that it was going to be a skill he needed to earn.

Still, Lock wasn't a quitter. Just because he wasn't amazing at something on his very first try didn't mean he couldn't work hard and make himself up to be the great healer he'd always been told he was.

Besides, Shun was counting on him! (Actually, Shun probably didn't care one way or another. But don't tell Lock that).

Once again he sat at the dummy and began the awkwardly shuffling and fiddling that he had before. It seemed that Jack was smiling on him, since the dummy had all the same symptoms. Maybe they just all came like that? It would be sort of disappointing if that was the case.

Regardless, all the symptoms were still there. The hot skin, the reddish color, the weird lack of sweat. He wondered if there was something more he was supposed to be seeing (was there maybe a rash? Something internal? What was he missing??) but seeing as the skin and temperature were the only real indicators, he just assumed it was the same thing as before. Nothing to do but get to work!

This time his efforts were quite a bit more applied. He threw on every scrap of body-cooling thing that table had to offer, because he was going to make DAMN sure that the dummy was saved.

It worked enough to the point where he successfully healed the dummy in an effective way, but it also made Cricket very angry at him. Awkward.
