She nodded in response, worry still tapping against her chest. She was just one fox, and she was sure the tribe was many. She slightly moved closer to Sagan, noting his low tone and taking measures to walk as silently as possible. It took her a second to notice he had stopped moving, having stared in horror at her paws when they walked into the mud. An ear flicked, head jerking to the side and stopping with one paw raised. Hooves. She padded over, sniffing the hoof marks, ears flicking backwards as she lifted her head, catching the scent that lingered on the hoof prints.

"They're nearby. I can smell them." She mused, glancing over at Sagan with an urgent lets-go expression.

Sagan nodded, flicking his gaze around to make sure they were alone on the river bank. "Follow my lead," he said, voice so low that even with their large ears Chrysocolla might not have been able to make out the words if he hadn't directed his voice specifically towards her. He crouched slightly and began to follow the tracks, keeping his ears and tail low. He doubted the bright pink of his fur would alert the prey (it never had before), but he liked to be better safe than sorry. He breathed a sigh of relief when they entered the forest. He would have to be careful to make no noise, but he preferred having cover to sneak through. He didn't spare a glance for the vixen following him, keeping his focus on the task at hand. What exactly they'd do when they found the deer he wasn't sure, but hopefully they'd managed to get on the same wavelength enough for silent communication.

They didn't have to travel for long. Not far from the river was a series of small meadows. They crept past the first, tracks meandering all throughout, but he quickly found signs at the edge of the meadow where they had moved deeper into the forest. It was at the second meadow that the smell on the wind suddenly became stronger. He crept along even slowly now, eyes peeled for the slightest hint of prey, keyed up and ready for action. At the first sign of brown hide, white ears, and long legs he stopped, waiting for Chrysocolla to come up beside him.

"Mmm." She hummed in response, crouching down as well. Her tail curled firmly against her torso, ears flat against her skull. She didn't make too much noise, however, she clearly wasn't as experienced as Sagan in keeping quiet. She scent became stronger, stirring up that familiar uneasy feeling in her heart. She was never good with hunting, and now she was about to prove it to Sagan. Shameful. She found herself overly conscious of every step she took, trying to perfect the silent sneak.

Sagan paused, probably waiting for Chrys. She padded up to his side, crouching flat against the ground. She flicked a glance his way, a questioning expression present on her features. What now?

Sagan winced a little when Chrysocolla spoke, but her voice was low and the wind was in their favor. They'd never hunted together before and had vastly different experiences, so he supposed it was too much to ask that they'd be able to function flawlessly. Silent communication was something that took time, after all. Still, he wanted to keep chitchat down to a minimum.

"We'll attack together. Watch for my signal," he said, trying to keep it short. Then they slowly crept forward, getting closer to the deer herd for a better look.

Sagan watched the herd intently for a time. At one point he briefly wondered how Chrysocolla was fairing; he wasn't sure if she was the patient type or not, and she might be wondering why he took so long to pick out a kill. Problem was the herd looked to be in good health. None too old, none injured. Finally he selected the likeliest target for success, a small female. He flicked his eyes to Chrysocolla, then back to the doe. He did this several times, then fixed his gaze on Chrysocolla, hoping to see that she understood.

Chrys was indeed patient. She hadn't been looking at Sagan at first when he glanced at the herd and than her, but eventually her eyes flicked to meet his and a tiny, affirmative nod followed from the vixen. Small female. Got it. Question was, what did he want her to do? Normally, she'd just charge at it, which was probably why she wasn't that decent of a hunter.... Sure, she was strong for a female, and pretty hardy, but no one had really taught her properly. As a child, she had been too busy fussing over her fur. Now? She regretted immensely never attending "hunting lessons".

Sagan mentally breathed a sign of relief when Chrysocolla looked at him and quickly picked up on what he was trying to tell her. He approved of the alert determination in her eyes, but he noticed a few wrinkles at the corners and the tight set of her mouth. He wasn't sure if it was because she was focused or worrying. Heck, that could even have been the face she made when she concentrated for all he knew. It wasn't like they had the time or opportunity to sit down and discuss it anyway. They were very close to the herd, and it was only good fortune that something hadn't happened yet to alert them to the foxes presence. In the end it was up to Chrysocolla what she wanted to do. He himself planned to aim for the throat. It was the quickest way to disable and control the prey, and also a dangerous spot since deer could deliver one hell of a kick with their front legs.

He made one last bit of eye contact with Chrysocolla, then turned to look back at the herd. His muscles bunched, tensed....then he burst forward. They only had a few seconds to take advantage of the confusion of the herd to get to their mark. If they failed, it would turn into a chase.

When he bolted she did the same, leaping to the opposite side he did in hopes she could help on the un-covered side. She had no clue what she was doing, but hey, Sagan was here to guide her. That and she was really hungry so at the moment she wasn't too concerned about if she was messing up or not. Right now the only thought in her mind was: catch a damn deer.

Luck was on their side. The pair were moving so fast that they had covered half the distance between themselves and the herd by the time all the heads and ears were up and swiveled in their direction. Tails flipped up and there was that moment of confusion when the need to flee took place, but the direction wasn't yet decided on. Just as the herd started to bound away, the foxes had caught up. Sagan lunged for the little doe, biting at her flank and trying to throw his weight at her legs to trip her up and make her stumble. He couldn't see Chrysocolla, but he could feel impact tremors as well as hear them, along with a quiet growl. He continued to rake with his claws, nipping at legs and avoiding feet, until his target appeared before his eyes. With a growl of his own, he sank his teeth into the flesh of the deer's throat and held on.

The struggle wasn't quite over, but the result of the hunt was in. The rest of the herd had fled, and with Sagan cutting off her air and weighing her down while Chryocolla continued to harry and trip her, the victory was theirs. It didn't take long, though by the time the doe finally collapsed with a last, shuddering breath Sagan's sore jaw muscles were more than ready for the fight to be through. He carefully released his grip and disentangled himself from the body, looking around for Chrysocolla. He spotted her, and grinned in shared triumph. "Not bad. That was a tidy kill, all things considered. With more practice you'd make a great group hunter, and probably an excellent solo hunter."

Grinning, Chrys trotted up to Sagan, smile widening as she examined their hard work. She tossed her head, flicking her tail against his side with a devilish purr.

"Naturally; did you expect anything less?" Well, really, she had been worried that she wouldn't be any good at it, but hey, she could pretend otherwise. Her eyes flicked down, pride blossoming in her chest, evident as her head raised high and a pleased smirk touched her features.
