Now, when you think normal, you might think average job, average home/apartment, average family, average life in general, right? Of course. This is what we've come to accept as the norm. Sadly, Makoto Ikaru hasn't had that pleasure ever since he could remember.

When he was only 2 years old, Makoto suffered from a terrible illness. His mother did everything in her power to save him, but no doctor could do anything. It seemed that young Makoto would soon meet an early grave. But, in her despair, Makoto's mother encountered an odd woman. This woman was the queen of vampires.

This woman said she could cure Makoto of this illness on two terms.

1. Makoto would be transformed into a vampire/human hybrid.

2. When he is of age, Makoto must marry the queen's only daughter and become her property essentially.

Makoto's mother agreed. Now Makoto has turned 18, and the time for the second part of the deal has come. But with no knowledge of his vampiric powers or the deal, can he handle being the groom and property of a princess?

αtsua chikumu

Atsua is 100 ( 18 ) years old, the heir to the throne over Vampires. All she needed was a husband and she'd be crowned. That's the last thing she wanted. The idea of having someone as her 'property' made her nauseous. If she wanted a slave she'd get a dog or a cat or something. But her mother is giving her a husband.. an unfavorable one. Arranged marriages was something Atsua has heard of, but didn't know it'd happen to her. She wouldn't mind too much, if he wasn't a hybrid. A something that has no category, not a human. Not a vampire. And certainly not her husband. When she was 98 (16), her mother told her of the arranged marriage that would happen when she and her 'mate' were of age.. and she immediately decided she'd make his life as much of a living hell as she could possibly make it.

Atsua likes cats, mainly. It's the only living creature she feels bad killing. Other than that, she doesn't like much. Stubborn and with a closed heart and mind, nothing gets through to her on a sentimental level.

Her powers are stronger than the other vampires since she is of royalty. She can manipulate people's thoughts, feelings, and make them feel pain and agony, both physical and emotional.. just by looking at them. Not only that, but she can move things telepathically. She can morph into any creature she wants, except humans and images of other vampires. She has incredible speed and strength, but she prefers to exert as little energy as possible when she goes to kill, usually using her ability to manipulate her prey's physical and mental state for an easy kill. Her fangs are, of course, retractable, but her canines are a little bit longer than the average human. Her eyes change color with her mood (colors seen throughout the story). Atsua has a secret power though, a power only her mother knows, not even Atsua knows of it. Her mother assures her she'll probably never stumble upon it, since she needs a light heart for the power to work.

Last thing to know about Atsua, she absolutely hates humans. Despises them. Every aspect of them disgusts her. Hence the reason she already hates her future 'husband'

It was a quiet morning for Makoto. Nothing out of the ordinary. He would get up, get washed, get dressed and hurry on school. Though...today was not like the others. Makoto had recently finished high school. His mom told him that it was time to get a part time job. "Well...at least she ain't totally kicking me out...", he laughed. A part time job to start was a good first step. What he didn't know, was how his life was about to flipped upside down. That day, he would meet his "mate."

Atsua yawned, glaring at the sun through her dark blue blinds that blocked out most of the sunlight. Another thing she hated about humans.. they need the sun. They dance in the sunlight, the same sunlight that burns her ice-cold skin. They loved the warmth of its touch, they loved its glow, its beauty. Atsua hated it. Once upon a time she did love the sun though. She was young and ignorant, dismissing her mother's warnings of the danger of the Sun and slipping outside to play in the sun like the 'other' kids would. It was fun at first, but she didn't know that vampires are meant to stay cold. She ended up with what they called Sun Sickness, which was the flu of vampires.. giving her a nasty 'fever', which wasn't a fever at all. It made her body temperature drop drastically, her blood, which was a dwindling resource anyway, nearly freezing. She shivered, she threw up blood, she cried in pain, her skin was weak, cold, and hurt to the touch. Sun Sickness could kill vampires, within days. Luckily though, she was strong enough to get better, growing up with only a memory of the pain.

Her mother knocked on her door, creaking it open slightly, "Atsua. Are you still awake?" Atsua glanced at her mother, "Yes." Her voice was pale and flat, monotonous. The voice of an average vampire really. "You know what today is right?" Atsua sighed and closed her eyes. She had actually forgotten that she was meeting that man today. The man she'd marry. She wrinkled her nose and stood up from her bed reluctantly, running her fingers through her hair and peering at her mirror that stood on top of her pale-white dresser. Her reflection stared back with her own cold glare.

Makoto at which point threw on his hoodie. It might have been 73 degrees, but he always felt safe in this thing. "Alrighty, let's get to job huntin'...", he yawned, still trying to fully awake. His little journey had him pass a rather odd looking pale woman, with an umbrella. That's not what caught his eye however. What caught his eye was her eyes. He couldn't avert from their gaze. But this is when his instincts kicked in. They told him; "RUN, RUN, RUN, DON'T LET HER CATCH YOU". Well his instincts hadn't steered him wrong before as he high tailed it away from the woman, escaping her gaze as fast as he could.

He did everything to evade her, from making sharp turns to full out pakour. Nothing was shaking her however. 'What's it take to lose this psycho?!', Makoto thought angrily.

Atsua turned to the door to talk with her mother again, to somehow beg for her to not go through with this. But she was gone. Gone to fetch the boy. Atsua let out a disgruntled sigh and began fiddling with her long, dark brown hair. Might as well look half-presentable. Her mind began to wander as she tried to imagine what he'd be like, but that didn't last long until she snapped back to her hatred for him, and for herself for allowing this to happen.

Jokurai, Atsua's mother, grinned as she saw a challenge. Her daughter's suitor ran, and she amused him, 'chasing' him per se.. in other words, appearing behind him every time he turned around.. just for the pure amusement it brought her. Finally, she had enough, and appeared in front of him, holding out her wrinkled, yet incredibly strong hand, which thudded against his chest, stopping him immediately, making him fall to his knees.
She grinned and crouched in front of him, placing her gnarly index and middle fingers under his chin and lifting his face to be eye-to-eye with her, "16 years ago. You fell ill. Incredibly so, that your mother sought my help. In return for your health, I got your future." She winked, letting go of his face, "You know what day it is don't you, boy? ...What's your name again?"

Makoto just blinked once. Two things were happening all at once. First off, this woman was able to stop him instantly? With one hand? Who the hell -was- she?And what was she going on about her "getting his future"? His heartbeat skyrockted out of pure fear. "Makoto....Makoto Ikaru....and what are you talking about? Just say it.", he said. Was this woman crazy? A cougar? A college loan loaner? Well, that didn't so much matter to Makoto. All that mattered was escaping alive.

Jokurai grinned mischievously,"Ah, Makoto. I remember now. You were such a sickly little thing, stricken with such a nasty case of influenza that no doctor could help you. You wouldn't remember you were just a baby." Jokurai chuckled lightly, amused with herself, and then she tilted her head to the side, "Did your mother never warn you? About your fate? To marry my daughter?" Her voice thickened slightly, as if to strike fear into him.

Jokurai was a rigid old thing, but she was brimming with sarcasm and bitterness and didn't at all act like her age.. of which she actually lost count of after 200, she no longer cared to know how old she was. She had to be somewhere in the 1000's or so. She liked to 'play' with people per se, by just using her creepy old lady charm. She smiled at him, "Today.. is the first day.. of the rest of your life, Makoto." Jokurai let out a bone-chilling cackle, as if she had just cracked the best joke the world will ever know.

~Meanwhile~Atsua smoothed out her dress, black with soft ruffles along the bottom that reached just under her knees, a red ribbon wrapped around her waist. She wore white stockings, but no shoes. There wasn't really a point to wearing shoes, they weren't going anywhere. They couldn't.. it was sunny outside. How her mother could brave the sunshine like that with nothing but an old umbrella to shield her from what will kill her due to her age. Unlike her mother who has to be a millennium, Atsu was only 100 or so. Granted, as it's a big number for humans, it's a number of youth for vampires. 100 is the 18 of Vampires. Just like how when humans break 18, they can do whatever they want.. they suddenly turn into 'adults'. Same with Vampires, except it's when you break a century, a much longer wait than to just 18, but it takes a lot longer for them to get control of their bodies and minds, and their hunger.

Atsua looked down at herself, feeling somewhat satisfied with her appearance. She kept her hair down, as she always did, in a dark brown curtain that fell to the middle of her back. She sat back down on the edge of her bed, staring at herself in the mirror. What was she doing.

Makoto's blood chilled. How did she know that he was sick? He only remembered because his mother told him. And when Joukrai mentioned marriage, suddenly the memories came racing back to Makoto. Breathing heavily, looking up at a woman in a cloak, which had to be Joukrai herself, a bite, everything came rushing to Makoto's head. "....No......No....", he whimpered. He...wasn't human....? He was a freak? A monster? No...it had to be a cruel prank. But then how do you explain the memories, or the way Jokurai teleported? Or even the way he could jump higher or run faster then other kids?

And that's when Makoto realized. The truth was always bitter. "...I...", was all Makoto could whisper out. He looked up into the sky, and screamed. Louder then he ever did. He was broken, sad, angry and most of all, scared.

Jokurai laughed, she laughed while he screamed in confusion and agony. This was what she was waiting for. The absolute horror of realizing that you're not what you've always thought yourself to be. The realization that your whole life as you knew it, as a happy go-lucky, fresh out of high school human boy, was a lie, a dream, nothing. "You, are a mix of vampire.. and human." She cackled between her words, "And you are destined to become a part of the Chikumu family, royal blood of the vampire community." She cackled once more, to strike fear into his heart, before she grabbed his shoulders, and the next thing he'd know, is they were at the Mansion, the hidden-away Chikumu Mansion, tucked away safely in uncharted forest-grounds, nestled on grass never even touched by humans, yet.

They were in the main hall, an elegantly decorated room, large and wide, a huge chandelier dangling above them, almost precariously. The floors were marble, and cold, but a large antique-looking rug lay in the the middle of the floor, covered in dark red swirls and golden fringe on the edges. A stairwell stretched up through the manor, and twirled around to reach the upstairs.. where Atsua and the other leisure rooms were. All in all, it was a very distinguished manor, suit for royalty. Even though said royalty was a string of vampires. Jokurai sighed happily, shoving her old umbrella into the little umbrella holder that leaned against the stairwell, and turned on her heels to be eye to eye with Makoto again. She held his face and looked him over for a moment, then took a step back and smiled her toothy grin, "Yes, I think Atsua will like you very much." She cackled again in amusement at the fear in his eye. Jokurai hobbled over to the bottom step and called up, "Atsua! Come down please!"

Atsua sighed, standing up from her bed and making her way to the door, trying to not feel or think anything. That's just who she decided she'd be, apathetic, cold, unfeeling.. and arrogant. Her arrogance and stubbornness came naturally to her. She slid out the door, and stopped to peek down into the main hall. She peered down at the man who stood next to her mother, the man she was destined to marry. uck. She grimaced in the shadows, He looks like a human. I thought'd I'd be lucky and have a human who takes on a more.. vampire-esque physique.. but, of course not. Her eyes turned black, the color they turned when she was overwhelmed with hatred, or genuine disgust. She took a deep breath, as if breathing in the last of her free air, and made her way down the stairs, glaring at the man.. what was his name again? She couldn't remember. It started with an M or N or something. Atsua stood in front of him, looking up at him. She was barely 5 foot, on the shorter side of vampires. He had to be 6 foot something, even her mother who towered over her at 5'10" was barely at his neck. Atsu narrowed her eyes, forcing herself to choke out a polite-ish sounding, "Hello."

While Jokurai laughed, Makoto simply remembered. He remembered when he first discovered something out of the ordinary. It was back in elementary school, it was recess and Makoto was sitting on the sidelines, reading Tolkien. He was always "that weird kid" who never played with the other kids. Soon enough, two other kids came up to him and demanded Makoto hand over his lunch money. 'Talk about cliche...', he thought back then, ignoring the bullies. That's when they threw him to the ground and started kicking him. And that's when they ripped his book, Fellowship of the Ring, in half. Makoto got up, pinned one of the bullies to the ground, and broke his nose, jaw and arm. Back then he wasn't sure why he was that tough, he just was. But now, Makoto knew the truth. "Why mom...why didn't you tell me....", he muttered. He couldn't believe his mother never told him of his being half vampire.

Makoto let out a slight gasp as he was teleported to Jokurai's home. It was more or less what he expected he supposed. But he wouldn't lie, it was very impressive. But when Jokurai mentioned her "daughter" once again, the reality and fear returned. Makoto's freedom was gone, he was away from the city, hell he didn't even know if he was still in the country or not.

Makoto eyes focused on the young woman making her way down the stairwell, clearly projecting an aura of pure, seething, hatred. Ignoring the aura of malice for a second, she was quite beautiful. In fact, she was so gorgeous, Makoto felt utterly out of her league. Why was he even chosen? Clearly there were far better suitors out there for this...Atsua, yes that was her name. Atsua would have a better suitor and Makoto would still have a normal life. Something else he noticed, she was a bit...short. Almost as short as Rachel Alucard from Blazblue. This brought a hint of amusement in Makoto's mind. Sadly he was not arranged to marry Rachel, he had to marry this woman. 'And I have to make the best of a bad scenario...'. he thought. After she greeted him, a bit halfheartedly he noticed, Makoto nodded and greeted himself. "Hello, I'm Makoto.", he said, keeping his eyes on hers, trying not to look scared.

Atsua tilted her head to the side slightly, admiring his confidence despite all the information that's been thrown at him. Five minutes ago his life was normal, he was a human for all he knew. Next minute he's stalked by an old woman, told that he's a human-vampire hybrid and that he's destined to marry the future Queen of vampires, yet here he stands. Tall, quiet.. Not a hint of fear shown in his eyes. Her eyes faded slightly, barely noticeable, from deep, pitch black to a ... Not-so-black black. Still black, portraying her unmoving hatred for him and his kind, but she at least had a tiny sliver of respect for his bravery. Atsua nodded once, "Makoto." She then turned to her mother.. For a final attempt to beg for her freedom. But she had vanished. Atsua sighed, frustratedly glaring at the empty space where her mother was standing. "She's probably gone to fetch lunch. I haven't a clue what she's bringing so don't ask." She turned back to him, a tiny gleam of amusement in her eye, "You don't get ill at the thought or presence of blood do you?" Her words were soaked in bitterness, she was teasing him. "If that's the case, I guess you'll starve here." Atsuas voice was usually low, monotonous, cold. But when speaking to Makoto it was incredibly so. She glared at him for a moment before she was distracted by a soft little noise. Mew Her eyes shifted dramatically from Black, to Baby Blue as she looked down at her little cat.. Her soft, caring side showing through. A side very rare to see in a lady like Atsua. She crouched down and picked up the fat, black and brown cat, struggling to cradle him in her arms.. Since they were almost the same size really..
Atsua smiled a little as her fat little bundle of fur reached out with his stubby little brown paw and pressed it against her cheek, "Hello Hikaru." Her voice softened and her cat mewed in a greeting, before turning his pudgy face to look at the stranger that stood in front of them. He meowed, as if to say 'who are you?'. Atsua looked up, her eyes now a dark blue, forgetting that she was in the presence of.. Makoto, but still soft for her cat. "Makoto, Hikaru. Hikatu, Makoto." She looked down and scratched Hikaru's chin, who purred happily with the affection. Finally, Atsua put him down and looked back at Makoto, her eyes now Gray.. Since Hikaru still continued to purr lazily and flop over her feet she still had some hints of softness in her, even when looking at Makoto. Her voice did, however, lose its sweetness and affection.. Dripping with bitterness yet again, "My fifth cat's name was Makoto." She gestured to Hikaru, "He's my seventh. I guess it's a little sad to live close to forever when your cats will always die."

Contrary to popular belief, vampires didn't live forever. They lived a damn long time, but not forever. Of course they can be killed, but theres a certain point where their bodies begin to age again, but they never know when or why. When they start aging, they start dying, very slowly. While Atsua just stopped aging, Jokurai started aging about 60 years ago, her youthful beauty slipping from her, to be replaced with a face worn down with time, and a body that could barely hold her own weight. She was now about the appearance of a 90 year old woman, though she still tried to act like she was 30, using her old lady charm to scare the crap out of people, like Makoto for example. Atsua knew her mother would die soon, and she started aging sooner than vampires usually would. When she dies, Atsua inherits the throne and everything else that came with the royal Chikumu crown, but she'd need a husband. Jokurai had chosen Makoto, because he was an opportunity within reach. She was dying, and needed to give her daughter a husband. Makoto was dying, and needed Jokurai's help, and he'd need a wife in his future too.

Atsua tilted her head, amusement flashing through her eyes again, "I wonder when you'll die. Will you live the same pathetically short life of a human, or the long and beautiful life of a vampire? Or maybe half the life a vampire, which is still a long, long time.. Five to eight hundred years at least. Much longer than 70-80 years." She tapped her lip mockingly, "The world may never know." She eyed him with eyes turned black again.
