[ 1 v 1 ] Research (Chance vs Nahm)

He felt the tension in the air, thick around him. Chance wavered between deciding whether to screw it all and attack or see if the creature was still interested in talking.

But apparently the choice was taken from him, because there was a rustle of clothing, a flash of teeth, and claws were digging painfully into his shoulders. Chance gave a startled yelp. He couldn't get a good shot this close, the bow wedged between himself and the creature, but -

The bladed edge of the weapon was pressed against the other's stomach, and Chance pushed hard, hissing a breath out from between his teeth.

"Holy ******** that's a lot of teeth."

The human bit back, though not with teeth; Nahm's robes and the clothes underneath sliced under the bladed edges of the bow, and the edge sank into his flesh. He hissed and jumped back, skittering back and partly behind a bookcase for what cover it could give him. Curiously, he had felt no Fear generated from his attack or his presence, though the compliment on his teeth was gratifying. "Thank you," he purred. "I am a grue."

He tilted his head a little, staring at the hunter with narrowed eyes. "Why aren't you making Fear?" he demanded, curious, not expecting an answer.

He gave the rows of teeth a wary look; they were quite a bit too big and quite a bit too many for Chance's liking. A quick step back and he still hadn't drawn an arrow, figuring it was easiest to be able to use the bow as a close range weapon in the constricted space.

"What exactly do grues do?" Chance asked, sweeping the bow in a wide arc, one blade aimed at the creature's shoulder. "And as for the FEAR...what exactly do you mean?"

"We eat," and Nahm smiled widely. The hunter seemed willing to follow him, using the bow as a hand-to-hand weapon rather than trying to shoot in these cramped quarters. Nahm hissed again as the bladed edge made solid contact. This time, though, instead of jumping back and looking for cover, the grue grabbed for the human's arm, yanking him close with a wiry strength and striking in an almost snakelike motion, rows of sharp, sharp teeth slicing into Chance's shoulder and then yanking back with a little sideways twist.

Much to his surprise, instead of tearing a chunk of human-flesh loose, his teeth seemed to slip, and his mouth snapped shut again with nothing in it. He let go and skittered back, startled and a little unnerved. More importantly, though, the taste and smell of Fear had burst briefly and powerfully across his senses as he bit. "You do have Fear," he mused, flexing his claws absently. "But where is it all going?"

The words were unpleasant. Chance really didn't want to ask what the grues ate - he suspected he knew already - but there was no getting around it. The creature had grabbed his arm and then teeth were sinking into his shoulder, dozens of them, sharp and painful and hungry.

Chance let out a grunt, trying to free himself, and after a second of struggling, he felt the teeth slide off of him and he staggered back, shaking his arm. It ached, shoulder throbbing, but at least no skin had broken (yet).

"Here and there," Chance answered, deliberately cryptic. "Did you taste some when you tried to eat me? That's not very good manners, you know."

"Depends whose manners," and Nahm giggled. He lunged forward again, teeth snapping into the hunter's arm again, seeking that burst of Fear, the mouthful of sustenance he might get, hunger driving him now.
