How did they come to the Kawni Tribe?:
It was a frigid morning when the smell of smoke and the sound of crackling cut through the air as a campfire’s burning embers sparked a wild fire that would change the life of one small filly. She was asleep between her parents when the fire surrounded them and through their sacrifice she survived. She was found by a little girl and her parents as they walked through the aftermath of the fire that had ravaged the land. They brought her back to their tribe, which had been affected by the fire as well with the season having been so dry that season. At first they had thought she was blind because of how pale her eyes were but as the filly healed they realized her vision was unaffected and her eyes were just naturally that color. The little girl named the filly Nimkii and that began her permanent stay with the Kwani tribe.
How did they handle the great fire that ravaged their village? What did they do? Where did they go? Were they a hero or a coward?
Even though the fire had happened when Nimkii was very young she had to learn to get over her fear of the smell of smoke and the sound it made. With the patience of her human companion and her will to persevere she finally got over her fear. However, it didn’t prepare her for the fire that ravaged the lands with the dry season.
The day had been going great and she had been at one of the nearby watering holes that had all but dried up, while her human companion was back at the teepee when she smelled it. Smoke was a usual smell for her, but this smoke smelled different. It was a smell that she hadn’t scented since she was very little. Her head lifted and gaze turned towards home and she saw the flames cutting across the lands. Even with what little rain they had gotten, nothing was going to stop the fire. She stood, frozen in fear, unable to move as she had a flashback to those few years ago. She had felt so much pain in the fact she had been unable to do anything. Those memories held her frozen in place and she was brought back to reality as she heard the shouts and realized her companion’s voice was among those cries. She wasn’t a helpless filly anymore-she could do something.
She shook her head and forced herself forward towards her companion. She realized, in horror, that the teepee she had called home was on fire and the screams of her human were coming from inside. The entrance was blocked by flames but Nimkii didn’t care, she wasn’t going to let her die. She couldn’t let her die. She whinnied and pranced back and forth outside the teepee and she spotted one of the blankets and grabbed it, tossing it over her face and neck as she pushed her body through the burning frame and into the teepee. Removing the blanket she looked around and the teenager was curled up towards the back of the teepee, frightened and wide eyed. The mare nickered and tried to reassure the girl that everything was going to be alright. She urged the girl onto her back tossed the blanket over her and the girl seemed to get the drift. She hugged onto Nimkiis neck and covered what she could on both their bodies so they could pass through the opening again.
The mare braced herself and forced herself through the flames once more feeling the flames kissing her legs and neck and singeing her hair. She moved away from the burning tents and found her mother. The frantic adult pulled the young girl off her back and checked her to ensure she was alright. Once she was assured the girl would be alright she nudged her gently with her muzzle and returned to help try and put out some of the fires.
Now that the village is coming back together to rebuild, how do they feel about that?
The fire had brought up old memories for her but she wasn’t going to let that keep her spirits down now that the danger had passed and everyone wanted to help rebuild. As distraught as her human companions are she is doing her best to keep them in a good mood. She is willing to do what she can to help make the rebuilding process an easier one.
