origin The A̵̴̛e̸̷̢̛l̸̷̀͘u̸҉̶̨n̶̕o̸͡͞r͜͏̸̛͡h҉̷̷̛̕ originally formed as a covenant to heal the sick and treat the injured, a roving band of medics whose goal was to ease as much of the world's suffering as they could. Their noble ideals became twisted and corrupted over time as their founding members became increasingly jaded, leading to the development of an almost mafia-like medical complex. The R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, the descendants of the A̵̴̛e̸̷̢̛l̸̷̀͘u̸҉̶̨n̶̕o̸͡͞r͜͏̸̛͡h҉̷̷̛̕ and even original members in a few rare cases, have no illusions about what they do. The R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ are in it for their own gain, largely, and while there is very little on this earth that they can't treat, the price very well may be more than what you can ever hope to pay. Do you dare to see if the doctor's in?
- + -
roles
+| upper echelons surgeon superior - x1 - Overall leader of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́. There is only one Surgeon Superior at a time, and they command the loyalty and respect of all Houses. Their word is law, and they are elected by the Tetrarchs to serve until such a time that they prove to be unfit for the position. They are the only ones able to command the Hand of the Shroud and by extension the Crimson Shroud itself, although it is rare for a Superior to dictate orders to the Shroud. Superiors can be elected from any House, though House Scalpel has produced the most Superiors to date. Surgeon Superiors do not survive being removed from office--the Tetrarchs see to that.
tetrarchs x3 - One of three councilors, the Tetrarchs act as advisers for the Surgeon Superior, guiding their actions when called upon and doing their best to ensure the Superior is the right fit for the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́. They elect the Superior when the previous one is removed from office, and they have the power to veto the Superior's orders--however, all three Tetrarchs must agree, and furthermore, they must gain the support of at least two of the three Houses in order to properly carry out this veto without potential loss of their lives. Tetrarchs are allowed to retire without risk to their person, although without their power to protect them, what becomes of them after they leave their office is up to the mercy of those they may have wronged.
house patron x3 - The House Patrons are the leaders of the three Houses of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́. Their official titles never speak their names--instead, they are merely Patron Scalpel, Patron Syringe, and Patron Suture. They oversee the actions of their specific Houses, and may elect their own council as they see fit. The Patrons may be audited by the Tetrarchs or even the Superior themself if there is reason to believe that they are untrustworthy--there is very little warning given, although spies make a drastic difference to this so long as they are not rooted out. Patrons are promoted from within the ranks of their own Houses, and are hand-picked by the Superior with varying levels of input from the Tetrarchs. Patrons may retire without losing their lives, although if they are found to be guilty of treason or a similarly unforgivable crime, they will be executed.
hand of the shroud x1 - The Hand of the Shroud is the high priest/priestess of the Crimson Shroud, and is in charge of all ritualistic duties. They lead the Shroud, which acts largely independent of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ proper--the Hand answers only to the Surgeon Superior, although they can be challenged by the Tetrarchs and even the Patrons, if those individuals are brave enough to dare. The Hand is seen as a demigod of sorts, and their power is considered to be nigh unquestionable. The Hand holds their position for life, although they may be at risk for assassination from those under the Shroud for their title.
+| middling ranks house scalpel x∞ - The doctors of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, members of House Scalpel are in charge of the treatment and diagnosis of all patients that have paid for their services. While not required to be Unicorns, the innate healing ability is prized within this House for obvious reasons. All full-fledged members of House Scalpel are expected to be highly proficient with healing herbs and other forms of treatment, and are generally walking compendiums of medical knowledge. The training to become a full member of House Scalpel is long and arduous, and the children of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ that seek to join this house are apprenticed at a very young age.
house syringe x∞ - Members of House Syringe make up the might and muscle of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, serving as both guards and soldiers if need be. Those in this House are responsible for the safety of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ as a whole, as well as capturing Bloodhounds and Beasts of Burden, as well as hunting for food. Those of House Syringe largely possess familiars of a similarly brutal sort--condors, bobcats, owls, alligators, bears, ravens, and wolves are all acceptable choices for their utility.
house suture x∞ - Those of House Suture are responsible for the inner workings of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, ranging from logistics to monitoring the performance of workers. Accountants are largely plucked from House Suture, although it's not unheard of for one of House Syringe to make it there as well. This House contains the record keepers as well, and are the custodians of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́'s accumulated knowledge. Without this House, there would be no R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, although this is a fact the other Houses may periodically like to overlook.
those under the shroud / shrouded x∞ - Serving as the priests of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, those under the Shroud act separately from those of the Houses and the majority of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ itself. They are the masters of ceremonies and those that handle purification and cleansing, as well as cataloging the information on the spirits of pestilence and disease that the Shroud worships. Beyond this, they are masters of potions and poisons, and may serve their duties as assassins for the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ if the Surgeon Superior so wishes. Those under the Shroud are given red cloth to adorn themselves, and the higher rank they reach, the more red they'll wear. Their beaked masks are given to them after one month of being Shrouded, and each one is unique.
debt collectors x∞ - The R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́'s repomen are the Collectors, outfitted with the best equipment and training that they can provide. The Collectors have packs of Bloodhounds at their disposal, with each Collector having their own pack that can hold anywhere from one to five Hounds. They train their Hounds to respond to their command, although how they treat their packs is closely monitored by House Suture professionals. Abuse of the Hounds will not be tolerated, and cruel Collectors can quickly find themselves falling from their comfortable place in R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ society to join the very packs they once commanded to reap what they've sown.
accountants x∞ - Those that manage the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́'s accounts are held in high esteem, despite the fact that they aren't particularly high up on the official ladder. The Accountants keep track of all the profits of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, and are responsible for categorizing what the Collectors bring in. They are highly trusted, and are even sometimes privy to particularly sensitive information on account of their roles; on the other side of the coin, however, this puts them at extreme risk. If they are found to be keeping some of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́'s earnings or have looser lips than anticipated, the punishment will be swift, severe, and likely fatal.
+| low ranks heralds x∞ - The Heralds scout ahead of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ on their route, finding the best places for them to set up shop, so to speak. They are sent out as emissaries almost, tasked with finding patients and resources that the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ seek. Heralds may also be used to communicate messages between the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ and its allies, and are largely winged soquili. If Heralds are grounded soquili, they are the fastest of their sort available, and are allowed a winged familiar to make their job somewhat easier. This, however, is often viewed as a crutch, leading to a fairly low number of grounded Heralds with airborne companions.
bloodhounds x∞ - Bloodhounds are considered by most to be mindless beasts, chained and kept solely for the Collector's use. They are almost always larger soquili, usually some variation of Kalona, warhorse/draft, mutants, Hippogryph, or even cursed Skinwalkers, if they can be contained properly. A Bloodhound is owned by one Collector only, and they are trained to follow orders to the letter.
beasts of burden x∞ - Similar in nature to the Bloodhounds, the Beasts of Burden are also viewed as inferior to full members of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́. They are treated as pack mules and rarely anything more, and are either captured by those of House Syringe or are brought in by Collectors to pay their debts with physical labor. Beasts of Burden may rarely be allowed to join a House or become Heralds, although this is reserved almost exclusively for debtors and not captives--that isn't to say a captive Beast hasn't managed to work their way up out of their lot, however.

territory
The R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ have no territory of their own, and instead wander in a large band across the landscape. They seek out the sick and ailing, and they follow strife and combat like crows. Generally, the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ prefer to host themselves in caves or similarly secluded areas--they do not set up camp in open areas unless there is absolutely no other choice, and House Syringe will be put on high alert during those times.

tenets of the herd
first, payment. - Do not treat a patient until they have paid at least half of their price. protect your own. - Though you may not always agree with your fellows, you are loyal first to your Superior, then to your House. the superior's word is law. - Stifle your complaints and obey it.
- + -
ooc rules
All IC happenings are carried out with permission of the players involved. - In short, if something is going to happen to your character, it won't unless you permit it first. Have you landed a role that you can't leave without dying, but you want to try something else? Just talk it over with me, and I'm absolutely certain we can come to a conclusion that won't result in anybody getting axed. o vob This also goes for things like being captured for Houndhood or being drastically demoted! You don't need to get actual items for the Shroud. - If you WANT to get like. a tabard or a hood or some custom item for this, go right on ahead! I'll probably think it's cool as hell. 8V But it's not required, j/s. However, things like familiars aaaare required to get. Can't exactly play one if you don't have one, after all. More rules may be added as necessary. - Here's hoping I won't have to do that, though! o vo/

the crimson shroud
The Crimson Shroud is, for lack of a better word, a cult. The R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ fostered the belief that the spirits of plague and illness are widespread throughout the world, and through the Shroud's intervention, individuals can protect themselves from the spirits' influence. This may seem to be at odds with the largely scientific minds of those in the rest of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, but the Shroud works well with them, encouraging medically sound practices through their varying rituals of cleansing and purifying. Those under the Shroud, as the practitioners are said to be, can be readily identified by both their beaked masks and their red garb. Lower-ranked members generally wear only small to medium-sized scraps of red fabric, while the higher-ranked members may even have a full ensemble constructed for them. Hoods are the most common of these sacred adornments, and it is admittedly rare to see someone under the Shroud that is lacking in the proper head covering--unless they're either newly-inducted or are low rank, that is. The Shroud brings a fanatical fervor to the workings of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, constantly pushing those of the Houses to improve and continue their scientific discoveries. It is almost expected for those under the Shroud to give their bodies to the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́'s science after they die, and although this is never explicitly demanded, it is very intensely suggested.
With their knowledge of diseases and all that does the world ill, the Shroud is also highly skilled in taking life. Those under the Shroud may act as assassins for the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ if required, and have become adept at brewing potions and miasmas that can fell even the strongest opponent with ease. While the Collectors and those of House Syringe are the obvious muscle, those under the Shroud are the stealth of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́, used for exacting vengeance where needed. The Shroud's reputation often proceeds them, and this gives the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ an additional layer of protection in most situations.
The R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ has a symbiotic relationship with the Shroud, teaching them more and more about the spirits of disease as they expand their knowledge. In exchange for this, the Shroud handles the ritualistic purification of all surgical implements and patients, any assassination contracts the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́ may see fit to give them, and assists in the furthering of the R̴͘҉͜͞a̷̸͜'́҉̨a͏̴̛͠l҉n̶̴ą̵́'s knowledge through their sacrifice in death. It is not uncommon for members of the Houses to be under the Shroud, although they are not officially a part of it. Their duties prevent them from giving the Shroud the complete dedication required of its members, but they are still treated with adoration by those under the Shroud--they are seen as Shrouded, just like any other, but having been given a higher purpose by the spirits.
