The idea of getting anything for free, even if it was just free sweets, was totally up Cearney's alley. He didn't exactly want to do a lot of work for it--that took away the point of getting something for free, considering working for something no longer made it free but essentially payment--but he would play the game for a little bit, at least.

Because if it was minimal effort, he could still consider it to be free, really.

Cearney's costume was minimal at best. He knew he needed one, considering the fact that trick or treat was traditionally done with costumes, but again, too much effort removed the point of getting things with little work for them. He was, therefore, barely dressed in a costume at all, simply wearing a tiara and calling himself a fancy leprechaun prince.

(There was no such thing, but no one here really had any proof of that, right?)

The first room he walked up to was almost absurdly dark.

Did he have to have darkvision to get this candy? What kind of trickery was this? It certainly wasn't trickery that Cearney approved of, and he looked up at where he thought Professor Darcy's voice was coming from and gave him a rather significant scowl.

Well, maybe he should just get this over with quickly.

Deciding that he wasn't going to bother with any of this nonsense of trying to carefully step around whatever was on the floor, Cearney simply dashed forward and snatched some candy pieces out of the bowl. Once he had managed to grab three, he quickly ran back out, because he heard something smash on the ground and he really didn't want any part of whatever problem he had caused.

He wasn't entirely sure if Professor Kenner was really a professor, considering he was only there some of the time, but he did have an office. And it seemed like he had candy in there.

Good enough for Cearney.

He shrugged, strolled inside the office, and listened to what he was supposed to do to get the candy. Ugh. Work. He didn't really want to work to get his treats. This was about free candy.

So, instead of working for it, he just asked, "Can I just have some candy?"

Kenner did not seem particularly inclined, but he was handed something nevertheless. When Cearney left the office, he somehow managed to drop the extra piece of candy, leaving him with the same amount he had before.

Why did he keep finding the rooms that required him to work for it?

Cearney was probably not very much fun, but he was quickly growing rather tired of this. Probably because he was grouchy and just wanted to get free things without having any fun, but then again, he wasn't sure Professor Pyre's idea of fun was actually... fun.

He stared warily at the creature, trying to figure out what he was supposed to do to get around it.

Then, it struck him. The "guardian" reminded him of a cat, and he knew he had something cats liked in his bag. After fishing a ball of yarn out of his bag, he rolled it away from the candy, and to his delight, he found the cat ran away from its post to retrieve the yarn. That was when Cearney retrieved some candy and left the room.

This office was terrible.

It was the size of a closet and it was full of bones. What kind of place was this? Why had Professor Walker made this his office? Cearney would have shut the door, triple locked it, and immediately demanded a completely different office.

Still, he was here to get candy, from ... somewhere. This room made him feel uneasy, and it seemed Professor Walker was barely paying attention anyway.

Cearney looked around, spotting some Treasure Treats hoarding what looked to be some candy away from him. Aha! He proceeded to the Treasure Treats, giving them something of a sarcastic smirk when they hissed at him for approaching. Carefully, with the finesse of someone who had a very practiced sleight of hand, he snatched a piece of candy out from underneath the treats and slipped away with it before the angry treats had a chance to even think about retaliating.

Honestly, Cearney was just about done with this. His willingness to keep pursuing these not-so-free candies he would probably finish eating within a few minutes was waning thin.

(Cearney was, indeed, no fun.)

He caught sight of Doctor Mil's room, though, and decided to give one more room a shot as he strolled inside.

The costume her and her familiar were wearing struck him as odd for a moment simply because he didn't know what they were referring to, but he shortly shrugged it off. He had to pick a ... ghost for some reason. (Why did Hollywood love ghosts so much? Demons were superior.)

"Alright, that one." He pointed at the fifth cup.

It wasn't that one.

Well, at least she gave him another candy, he guessed.

Cearney sighed, taking his eight candies and going back to his dorm room with them.
