User ImageTwilight let out a sigh, closing her book for what felt like the hundredth time. Or maybe it was the first time on the hundredth book? Brilliant purple eyes looked at the treasure held in her hands, and then out to the library surrounding her. In an increasingly rare moment, she decided it had been far too much time inside the library and she needed to go out for fresh air. How long had it been since she'd seen any of her friends? Or Prince Everfree? Or really, any other faun or fauny outside of the librarian?

Twi stretched, standing up and making her way to the stacks where she'd gotten her most recent read from. "Okay Book, time for you to go back home." She smiled, speaking to the friend she'd made in it as she placed it gently back where it belonged. Humming, the purple fauny stretched again and made her way out of the library, hoping to spot someone she knew.

Self appointed patrol of the branches and surrounding skies ended for now. How he loved the smells of bark and leaves. Flying around the tree reminded him so much of a home that still was not forgotten. He'd stay out in the wooded area completely if it weren't for the fact that he'd miss seeing friends he'd made.

More of them had wings than didn't, yet he hadn't seen any of them in so long. It was to the point he'd gone looking for Fluttershy previously. Twilight, one of his very first new friends, was easy to find. She'd been buried in books and he hadn't wanted to disturb her. At least she was safe there.

Speaking of, a casual glance upon entering the tree fell upon the lilac unicorn outside of her natural habitat. Smiling he swooped in, staying air born in confidence. "Lady Twilight, how are you?" Maybe she had ventured out for lunch? It was a good time to to share a meal.

Twilight jumped hearing her name called, not having been expected to be noticed. This must have been her lucky day! "Everfree!" She grinned wide, thrilled to see her dear friend.

"Oh Everfree, it's great to see you!" Twi exclaimed, holding her arms out for him to land and hug her. "It's been so long!" Really she should leave the library more often, it was surely her fault they hadn't gotten to meet in forever! Not since the aftermath that left a hole in their hearts.

Celestia, she needed to get out more! "I'm wonderful now that you're here Everfree! How have you been? What have you been up to? Tell me everything!" She had to know! Everypony knew what she had been doing, it was all she ever did! She'd barely gotten the last of the first of many questions out before her stomach growled as loud as it could.

"Maybe we should talk over lunch? Twi suggested, blushing from embarrassment.

Landing easily, he accepted the invitation giving the purple unicorn a hug. "It is wonderful to see you too!" The library books hadn't eaten her, that was a relief! Smiling warmly at her he resisted the joke.

Instead he listened to her patiently working on the list of questions ready to answer them. That was until her stomach popped up with a question of its own.

"That sounds like a great idea!" Offering her an arm, he waited until she was ready to walk to the food area. "I am afraid I don't have much to tell but I'd happily trade stories over lunch." All the books she'd read, there would be plenty to tell of the worlds she'd read.

Twi smiled, recovering from the embarrassment of forgetting to eat in Celestia knows how long. "Oh, Everfree, there must be some interesting stories from while you're out guarding all of us." She smiled up at him. There was nothing he did that she didn't find interesting in some way.

"How is your health?" She had to ask, the last time they'd gotten to talk at length had been while he was still severely injured! "Any lasting wounds, or lingering pain?"

Ears forward, brown eyes focused on the lavender unicorn in front of him and silence sitting in the air as he listened. It wasn’t until it was clear she was done speaking when he actively considered her questions. Without releasing he was doing it, his eyes drifted off to the spot where the chaos started. Moments passed as twilight and every faun faded into the background as that spot fell into sharp focus. “I still can picture the event.” There were more direct ways to say it, less soft and fluffy, not his way. “The healing is breath taking.” His words hit as Twilight came back into direct focus color around her dulled but she shined in the forefront.

The response was backwards, it was easier to answer there first a warm up before flight. Wings shifted, feathers fluffing, the wind was almost palpable as the trees came to mind. Twists and turns of the air along with the lives just existing around him. Shear life griped his heart with a warm hand boosting his spirit.

“It is amazing out there, seeing the healing from the air.” Flying through the branches gave the best view of the tree shapers handiwork. It was a weaving unlike the craft work of his treasured basket or anything a Pegasus could pull off. Almost like a natural healing of bone and skin from a skilled hand of a healer. Really, that was the best analogy he could put a finger on. “Every day I watch it, only got swatted twice.” With sparking eyes, he offered a deep laugh, it could be merely poor flying but it was easier to believe the Tree took a swat. Lack of running into branches meant he was getting better, or accepted. Both ideas had merit later was his personal favorite.

Interesting things he’d seen, how to put into words life? Birds, animals, sounds of leaves shifting against each other, light fingers through the canopy. Really, there was no way to put into words everything. Her books could use words he had no concept of, but trying was worth it. “The life in the Tree and surrounding bursts forth unyielding. Seeing fillies and foals playing reminds me the Tree didn’t bend and it didn’t break.” Earthen eyes glancing back to the wound bandaged, warmth playing in a smile.

What else? There were concerns, missing faun particularly. Friends had returned after a while, deep concern rooted there but his voice stalled. Not his place to say anything, so it was on to other things. “There was a baby deer near the Apple farm, abandoned, I made a friend and she grew beautifully.” Just like his Forest, pieces of home so far away he couldn’t even properly remember it any more. There were pieces, fragments of scents and sharp points of color even a flicker of sounds washed away in the tides of time. “Oh, and a new flying partners, seems I charmed a mother bird and I’ve helped her chicks during my patrols. No threats.” Positive messages, hopes and warmth of life were far better than flames and blood. Celestia help him he could taste the ash and smoke still.

Coughing he took a drink out of his cup to clear his throat as he asked, “How are things in the library?” Her books probably were his trees, there were worlds in those books beyond his imagination.

She nodded in complete agreement. From what little she had seen of the healing process, it was coming along beautifully. The pain that echoed in her chest felt better by the day. Surely, their home was healing well. "From the few books I've found, it's a wondrous and lengthy process. I'm still not sure how they manage it so perfectly." Twi offered, grinning like a fool at the thought of someone swatting Everfree. Surely he wasn't so poor at stealth that a bit of gawking was enough to get him in trouble.

Twilight's smile turned thoughtful, thinking on his words. Perhaps their home was in it's youth, bouncing back easily like a child would. Moving on, carrying on, as any other day. As if it hadn't been nearly so bad as it had seemed. "It stood strong against that which would tear us apart." She added, taking a chance to look him over. Laisidhiel wasn't the only thing standing strong.

"Oh! You found a fawn? How sweet!" She almost swooned. The thought of Everfree with baby animals. It was just too sweet to not coo about. And chicks! Celestia, he was so very good with animals. "Are you teaching them how to fly?" Twi questioned, oblivious to any discomfort Everfree might be feeling. The purple fauny was taken by surprise with his question. How were things in the library?

Unbidden, the image of the many stacks she'd recently poured over, the endless shelves she'd not even begun to touch. How was that? "Very informative." Twi answered, pulling herself out of the revelry. She blushed as the last book she'd encountered crossed her mind. An erotica. Something she would never have touched in Ponyville. But she was trying to learn everything about faun culture, which included learning about their.. Intimate desires. Right? She fidgetted, taking a sip from her own cup, trying to hide the brilliant scarlet she was surely turning. "The children's books are fascinating. We have stories that are so similar.. Rapunzel, for instance. The girl with the long hair, trapped in the tower." She offered, trying to keep her mind out of the erotica she'd admittedly, been keeping.

"The fable it's almost exactly the same. The main differences are how Rapunzel was contained, and her name." Twilight grinned, utterly enthralled with the subject. "We know her as Rapunzel, but to the faun children her name is Persinette." Twi grinned, "As for how she was confined, for us it was a tower, hidden within a clearing, within a forest, far enough away from the kingdom it took several days to ride to. Persinette was contained within an exceptionally tall, and rather large tree. Much like our beloved Laisidhiel." Twilight informed him, finding the similarities amazing. "Of course the 'prince' that rescued her was different, but the story lines are almost identical. How amazing is that?" The fauny could drone on and on about the subject, including many different stories.

Chest swelling with pride, he held his chin high as his eyes fell to the evidence of a brazen attack. These fauns and faunie, all of them proved they couldn’t be bested by any act of malice. “We are a reflection of Her.” A lot like a place and time long past, what grows reflects the grower. No matter what came against them, they were safe as long as the defenders and their home stood strong. Lost in that little thought, he missed her looking at him until she spoke again.

Back in the conversation, a chuckle and hand scratching his ear responded, “She was a sweet little creature. Took some doing to get her trust but she grew wonderfully.” Off doing what deer did, leaving fond memories of helping to nurture the little creature until it was strong enough on its own.

“They seem to think of me as a game, tag is harder than it looks!” Small and exceptionally agile his skills were put to the test by the moment. It was a test he thought he didn’t have to study for but they taught him differently. The practice was great and the animals seemed as amused. At least, little feet grabbing his main and tugging when he didn’t reciprocate proved intent.

A tilt of the head and flicker of an ear observed her apparent discomfort. She shuffled in her seat bring forth the question of comfort. Maybe the bench was too hard? Surely there were cushions for scholars down there and the seats here becoming unaccustomed? Asking seemed too personal and it wasn’t like he had anything on him to ease the perceived problem.

Everfree laughs, shoulders shaking with a memory held closely. “I remember that legend. I’ve heard the story a time or two. My forest was a popular host for abducted princesses and tasty foals.” Hands raised with fingers twitching, the stallion attempted his most ‘evil’ chuckle. Any attempt at scary would be lost on a faun with eyes, big grin reached his eyes and told the story. Throughout his history of guarding his Forest, a lone life of a misunderstood sentinel came with brambles.

Fear of an untamed forest, existing without pony magic and unknown bred stories. It was only natural, or seemed. Living so long in this world, less of the fear and justifications stuck with him. Too long removed, what memories existed as if they happened to another faunie. Lonely post and the screams of terrified ponies over the ages didn’t feel real. Tastes of the emotion sat against his heart but now there were too many friends for the feelings to grow
.
A lot in life, with only his beloved Princesses for friends, and one crazy zebra he’d treasured from afar, had changed. Horror of the events that led them to his land could never be outweighed, he’d never wish them to happen. Distance has a way of making it seem less somehow and living among the good worked its magic.

A question caught in his throat and a cough chased it away. How many of his fellow faunie would go back if they could? Seasons hear had them all rooted now. The Princesses had mates of this world, without their return a return at all would never happen. Even if it was possible, as it is he couldn’t say for certain if the idea had any merit. Going back to being feared and alone wasn’t appealing even with all the love he had for his forest.

"It is amazing how themes exist in so vastly different places. Makes me think we came from here in ancient past or they came here the same way we did. Commonalities existing over the long ages." It could have been a common theory or truth known to most. Histories of their new home were not among his interests. It made sense if it was something every foal potentially knew.

Twilight nodded her head in agreement to Everfree's statement. Perhaps that was why they all were able to recover from the attack so well. That he'd managed to friend something so sweet and innocent, it was no surprise to her. Everfree was one of the kindest faunie she'd ever met. "Oh goodness Everfree! How could you ever keep up with them?" Twi laughed, unable to keep the thought of him chasing after a couple of small birds from invading her mind.

"Your forest was one of the scariest things." The lavender faunie grinned, giggling when he made a scary face and laugh. How she had ever thought his forest, his home, was terrifying... Twi tried to shake the thought, instead recalling Everfree chasing baby birds.

Twi blinked a little, not having made a connection like that. "I think it's more likely we came from here." She thought about it, "There would be no reason to believe they came from us, at least not a logical one. Not with how easily we were integrated into society here, and how well set up Faun life was." The unicorn pondered, tapping her chin lightly, "I wonder how much of it is ingrained into us from culture, and how much is passed through various magicks?" Twi's mind was racing. How could she possibly have missed a connection that huge? But what other explanation was there for not only why they looked so very similar, but why they also shared stories and countless other traits and lore.

She had to get back to the books! To someone who could or would answer these questions, or at least not call her dense for having forgotten if they had been told to them already! "Oh Everfree! Thank you~" Twi smiled wide, getting up from her seat. Without a second thought, or even a first one, Twi planted a kiss on his lips and started towards the exit of the cafeteria. Celestia, this was huge!

That was the ten bushel question! All he could do was chuckle at her question. Truth, he wasn't really able to keep up them so much as make a valiant effort. The games pushed him and really was all in good fun.

Running his hand through his mane to readjust rebellious locks, he smiled at her. The Forest scared faunies, a world that existed without their magic. In a way, this place was just like it. It struck him at that very moment that it could have been why this place felt like home. From his perspective, this was the home he'd be comfortable with all along.

For a moment, his ears swiveled to 'hear' the chaos that must have been.

Her voice pulled him away from the thoughts and he was grateful. Smiling with his hands folded together, Everfree took in everything she said. He sat up straighter proud enough that she took what he had thought aloud and ran with it. This was a race he wasn't quite keeping up but it was a joy to watch her run it.

"Your welcom-" The smiling response abruptly ended with her sudden action. Frozen completely in place, Everfree didn't move a muscle. A few muscles did go, his eyes were blinking rapidly and his ears moving every which-way. Did she kiss him? Why? Someone needed to poke the hamster on the wheel in his head to get going again.
