Rin comes from a very small, poor village in Sunagakure. She lives only with her mother. She is 16 years old, and her father was murdered when she was 13. This changed her in the deepest parts of her soul, as she was very close to her father. She keeps his gold pocket watch with her at all times, it is her most prized possession and she looks to it for guidance. She has since become very distant from others and even from her adoptive mother, who is trying to form a stronger relationship with Rin.
Rin spends much of her free time watching others. She has never been the type to have a "normal" life or "normal personality", and because of this, other lives fascinate her. She is one of the remaining members of the Sakkakugan bloodline, and her father was her only tie to her roots. She is lost, unable to control the alternate personality that has taken over her powers, and craves to gain control of her genjutsu and ultimately find more about her history. She also has a strong desire to avenge her father's death by finding and killing the person or persons responsible.
To attempt to gain control of her powers, she documents every time she uses them in her journal, along with her personal thoughts and hopes.
