Comes across as some kind of flippant, carefree 花花公子. also a terrible flirt Likes surrounding himself with pretty things and pretty people (◡‿◡✿), and also pestering Guo Wei a lot by lounging about while his friend reads.

Contrary to appearances, he is much better at the sword than studying, being a terribly lazy person. Qiu Yang chooses to apply himself more to military strategy than other scholarly academics (the only book he voluntarily finished was the art of war), and this extends on to his interest chess and weiqi (also an incessant hustler when playing). His military interests also stem from a not-so-well hidden sadistic streak.

As a noble he is rather arrogant, and very outraged at the destruction of his homeland. Having returned from an expedition to the new Four Clans, he dislikes the fact that he has to share the same space as the plebs. Dramatically upset and annoyed that his nice clothes and worldly possessions are mostly gone.
