Practically pulling Kalden over to the area of games, Hymn pointed at the one game that required Kalden to smash things, happy that he'd found something that the other would like.

"This one. I pick this one." His tail flicked behind him as he pulled away, allowing the lion to grab the mallet and eye the walkers that popped up. After listening to the small clarification that hitting actual zombies wasn't The Proper Thing To Do, Hymn clutched his hand to his chest and frowned.

"I... would never," He breathed softly, frowning as his bright mood seemed to dip a little.

Uh oh, Kalden, better make the gryfon boil happy again! Otherwise you might have a crybaby on your hands.

Again.

At the spiel of instruction by the attending gnomes, Kalden almost snorted in derision. What an odd, but novel idea for a game. It was simple enough, and looked like fun...something that the lion boil would undoubtedly be good at. It made him wonder if perhaps Hymn had chosen it with him in mind, or if the gryfon simply had been just that emboldened by the influence of the punch...or both.

So Kalden reached over and put his fingertips lightly on his companion's arm. "Hey, they're just toys...we've both seen things weirder than this. C'mon! Give it a shot, you heard what the gnome guys said, yeah? No hitting real zombies." The lion certainly didn't want the gryfon to feel bad about his own choice, and so there was honest sympathy in the bright blue eyes. "Besides! We might win something."

His smile was still cheery as he attempted to boost the spirit of his companion.

Taking the mallet, Hymn lifted it (not very well), and then proceeded to try to hit the zombie-lookalike, doing a bit more flailing than actual hitting.

He managed to hit one.

Only one.

The 'zombies' weren't moving very fast... but to Hymn's credit, he wasn't used to attacking anything.

Nonetheless, the punch he'd drank began to wear off, and Hymn's lower lip quivered as he backed up, wings pressing against his back as his shoulders hunched.

Uh oh. He looked about to cry...

Kalden shot his friend a rather concerned, sympathetic look, frowning slightly as he approached for his turn. "Hey. It's not the end of the world...we can try again, or even play a different game if you want..."

Still, the lion boil made a decent attempt. Perhaps it was the fact that Hymn was upset that distracted him, or the utter fact that every swing of the mallet had the floating male sliding backwards in the air by the sheer force of his strength. It wasn't fair really, he mused with an inward grumble, that one of the very powers that made him who he was negated the impressive strength that he possessed. It irked him now...and it had irked him for years. "JackDAMMIT!" He swore, as yet another Walker got away from him.

In total, he too managed to only hit one. Ruffling the hair behind one furred ear with a clawed hand, he looked over at the gryfon with an incredibly sheepish half-smile. "Well...that didn't work too well."

Staring at the game that his friend had just lost, Hymn's shoulders dropped as he watched the lion freak out over losing, ears back and tail swaying side to side.

Hymn sputtered, finding the reaction utterly FUNNY, managing to quell it with a hand over his mouth just in time that Kalden turned to look at him.

"I've... never seen you act like that." Usually, his friend was calm and collected, but this?

This had definitely lifted his mood a bit.

"I... think I'm gonna try again," The gryfon stated, grasping the mallet from Kalden and then twisting his body and using his wings for the second round, intent on hitting at least two of them.

WHAM.

WHACK.

The rest were misses, but Hymn set down the mallet with a triumphant flourish, gathering his prize -- a single golden coin -- and showing it to Kalden with pride.

"LOOK!"

It looked... a bit shoddy, if one had to be honest.

Relief surged through the silvery-haired lion as he saw the gryfon manage his win. He'd been afraid that the other boil would retain his accuracy from the round before, and then the pale kid really would cry, and that would just be an utter defeat for his winged friend.

With determination in his blue on ebon eyes, Kalden nodded with enthusiasm. "Good job! Let's see if I can do half so well, yeah?" The grin appeared back on his face then, and he gave a half mock-bow to the game itself before taking the mallet into teal-tipped fingers, gripping it firmly in his palms, taking a pair of practice swings before the game began.

Mind, he didn't do all too spectacularly as each popped up one before the other, but his pride was at stake, and if Hymn could win, then by all that was damned he could too! Perhaps that intensity had him missing the majority of the bobbing heads that popped up to taunt him, but he managed to thwack two of them solidly with the hammer, and that, it seemed, was all he needed for success.

It had taken a bit of floating stubbornly back into range (which, if he'd managed not to waft away, might have resulted in a higher score), but all the same he would take it. Reeling in the fact that he wanted to take long, relieved breaths, he braced the mallet's head on the ground as he retrieved his prize.

"Well now that's both of us!" He crowed in victory, his success conveyed over the handsome boil's features. It would have certainly been a blow to the lion's pride had he lost both rounds when Hymn had managed to win one.

"Onto something else?" He suggested, now quite tired of this game's premise.

Nodding affirmation, Hymn moved away from the booth as he pocketed his coin for safekeeping, glancing over the various games before deciding on archery.

He'd always wanted to try archery, much like the monsters that guarded the temple, but his family had always assured him that he didn't need it.

But he still wanted to try.

Moving over and testing the weight of the bow, he lifted it and pulled the string a few times, testing it like he'd seen the archers do. He knew better than to let go of the string when it didn't have an arrow notched.

Lifting an arrow and sliding it back, Hymn breathed in, and then out, concentrating as he let it fly, following suit with two after a few moments of calming his nerves.

Hymn had gotten a bullseye.

The gryfon had gotten a jacking bullseye.

The broad-shouldered boil had to stare for a moment, as he'd ambled after the gryfon sheerly for the reason that now Hymn wanted to play another game. That was all well and good for him.

To his defense, the bow and arrow wasn't even in the remote list of talents that his family had obtained over the centuries. They were more accurate with bo-staffs and other dramatic, and often magical means of dispatching their enemies. Still, all the same, he could see the wonder and delight in Hymn's eyes...

...and that through him for a bit of a loop.

So he took it up, but those vibrant eyes strayed as he shot arrow after arrow, and cursed not so subtly, though he tried to bite it back.

It was clear that this was a game that Kalden was abysmal at. Yet the lion had the honor to put his bow at his side and smile lop-sidedly at his companion. "I think you have bested me. Have you ever considered taking up the bow?"

The first rule of pride, after all, was learning when it was time to be humble.

Hymn lowered his bow, startled out of his intense focus, taking his golden coin as prize and looking away.

"... no. I haven't." He set the bow down, not really wanting to continue down that particular topic of conversation. His family had never wanted him to fight, always wanting others to protect him, instead of being able to defend himself.

After all, his entire life would be devoted to his family and traditions in their sacred home, right?

Flicking his tail, Hymn sighed as he shook his head, giving Kalden a tired smile. "... I think I'm going to go for a walk. Thank you for playing games with me."

It seemed like the gryfon wanted to be alone.

Kalden blinked at the sudden change of demeanor in his friend, his own tail going still, and the furred ears flattening against the teal-tipped mane as the lion boil's easy smile dissipated. He might not always be perceptive, but the change in Hymn was as loud as a ringing gong. "I..." He didn't know what it was he'd said to make the gryfon seemed so despondent all of a sudden, but it saddened the larger of the pair. It felt like an ache in his chest that proceeded to sink lower. 'Idiot...' He mused internally, "Did...I say something wrong?" His deep voice softened into just above a whisper, instead of his usual vibrancy.

If Hymn wished to leave, Kalden had no intention of stopping him, but it was still a blow. Disappointment flowed through him, putting a rather uncharacteristic damper on his happy, eager persona. The only reason he'd come to visit, beyond the hopes of spending more time at his school of choice, was to spend some time with the long-distance friend that he'd managed to make. It wasn't as though the snow lion had many of those within the confines of his family's mountain-bound temple.

Every fiber of his being wanted to accompany the gryfon on his trek, to not waste any second of the one opportunity he had to be alongside Hymn...but Kalden didn't wish to offend the other boil either. "I...can return to the prom, I guess."

Secretly, he'd still been hoping to coax his friend into at least a dancing lesson, even if it had been outside in private - Jack, hopefully outside and just the two of them. But no, it seemed that he'd somehow ruined even the most slender chance at that pipe-dream. "You...are going to come back before it ends?" It was a careful query that tried not to sound too wistful, but failed miserably.

The gryfon stopped, and after a moment's thought, finally shook his head. "... no."

Inhaling sharply, he turned to regard the other, one ear flicking forward while the other remained flat against his head.

"... it's not you. I just... I never get time to myself. I just feel... like I've been coddled a lot lately. And winning a few games... made me realize... that maybe I want to try to face my fears, and not be the wimp that everyone knows I am. Maybe I can attend this 'Amityville' and become a better person. Because I sure as jack won't just sitting at home, doing nothing."

The gryfon was always doted on, and honestly... he was tired of it. He could never do anything for himself, never learn, and now, realizing that there was a possibility of him living his own life here? And learn how to defend himself, away from prying eyes that would never find out?

Turning his head away as he tried to gather his thoughts, Hymn pressed his lips together, blinking slowly as his ears drooped. "... so I think I just. Need to walk. And try and clear my head. I... don't want to hear any opinions right now. I'm having a hard time just sorting out my own thoughts."

Curling his tail around a leg as a manner of comforting himself, Hymn didn't look at Kalden again, as he moved off further.

"I... I'll be back." He thought, maybe. Maybe he'd be back... and ask Kalden to escort him home after everything was said and done.

But now? Now... he just wanted to be alone.

The lion boil's heart sank further.

There was something in his chest that skipped like a rock aptly thrown across the lake, as he watched the gryfon's ears flick and adapt to both the mood and the sounds around them. And he angrily sank even those tiny delights into the mire of his mood. No. His mother, he mused, would grab his ears and lecture him for such bright thoughts as he had entertained.

"Ah, sorry..." The lion boil's smile was sheepish, "I hope I've helped and not been a detriment. Good luck, Hymn." His hovering above the ground bobbed and wavered, betraying his own emotions, were there anyone that truly knew him. "I'll...be at the dance hall when you come back." Those words were firm and solid. That he knew with surety. So he might not get the private lesson he'd wished for, but at least there was the potential to say goodbye.

Brows furrowed, he floated back towards the dance hall proper, feeling as though he'd just stabbed his only friend in the chest. Kalden felt as though he had lost something, and he hadn't the faintest inkling why. it made him angry, frustrated, and sad. He could almost hear his mother's voice scolding into his ears, the teal-tipped fluff laying buried into the pale mane now.

He made his way slowly towards the dance hall, devoid of purpose.
