Faina Patrovna's NEWTs

Core Classes

Charms: This was a class Faina took quite seriously, as this was the foundational knowledge several other of her classes were based upon. Practical, 'bread and butter' magic was the way she approached Charms, and so spent much of the summer getting quite proficient in her Charms. This confidence carried over to the NEWT, where she performed several of her Charms wandless for her examiners. -O

Defense Against the Dark Arts: Faina had always done well in this particular class, and had good reason for taking it very seriously. This class literally saved her life, and for this she was grateful to Madam Cohen. As this was a core subject needed for her to become an Auror, Faina put a great deal of effort in her preparations for this NEWT, and being the now out-going Captain of the Dueling Club, anything less than an 'O' would be considered a failing grade for her. -O

Herbology: This was not one of Faina's favourite classes, though much of this had to do with her instructor. Fortunately, she had a friend, Rhett Ye, from whom she could get some tutoring in the subject matter, even if she lacked his intuitive insights. Again, she studied hard for this exam, as she needed it for her career, and although she came out of it looking like she was pulled backward through a hedge, she managed a nice grade. -EE

History of Magic: This was among Faina's best, non-magical school subjects. That said, as the terms wore on the sheer amount of names and dates became something of a chore to retain, after all, there were quite a few Goblin Revolts, and some of the names popped up in the course of studying for her Wizard Law NEWT. As she prepared for her NEWT exams, History was one of those classes she placed less of a priority on in terms of time devoted to poring over her seemingly endless notes on the subject. As a result, she missed scoring an 'EE' by one missed answer. While it was still a passing grade, Faina wasn't pleased with it. -A

Potions: Unlike her sister, Potions was one of those classes Faina had trouble in, as it was uncomfortably close to cooking, which she wasn't particularly good at either. However, this one she needed to do well in if she wanted to become an Auror, so she applied herself with her usual level of determination. Faina studied her formularies and her notes until she could quote passages at length from memory. She was just happy she managed to get her final exam potion to come out looking like it was supposed to, grateful not to be called on to test it, and pleased to score the grade she needed. -EE

Transfigurations: This was always a class of magic Faina had to work hard at to do well in, and this provided for her a challenge. As it was, she often found herself in the position where she was helping her younger sister with her Transfiguration work, which actually helped Faina get better at her own studies. Once she got the hang of the mathematical principles, and understood how much of it was an application of her considerable will, Faina didn't struggle as much with it as she did early on. As this was one of those 'must-do well' classes, the Slytherin poured a great deal of effort in her preparations, and posted a solid grade for her efforts. -O

Elective Classes

Art: This was one of Faina's favourite classes at Hogwarts, as she liked having the chance to express herself artistically. She also loved her teacher, Professor Hawthorne, and this caused Faina to put a lot of effort into a class and a NEWT which would do little to advance her career aspirations. Her effort in her studies of Art History might also explain why her History of Magic score suffered somewhat. Her extra credit project ended up being an Impressionistic mural depicting an anecdote from her family's history, which took up a considerable amount of her free time to create. Faina put her heart and soul into her NEWT art project, as she couldn't bring herself to do anything less to honour her beloved teacher. -O

Cursebreaking: Faina was not interested in becoming a Magi-Archaeologist or taking a job at Gringotts, however, she took the Cursebreaking class in order to gain an edge over other possible candidates for Auror training, and round out her skill-set. Besides, the Ministry might find an potential Auror with a background in Cursebreaking to be useful. As it was, she found the classwork interesting, and she really liked the teacher, which helped out. Faina studied for this NEWT with a great deal of effort, as she really wanted to demonstrate she could do the work well. Her final grade proved her hard work was worth the effort. -O

Ghost and Ghoul Studies: This was an odd class Faina took, and she took it because of an interest in the subject more than anything else. While having the knowledge might prove useful at some point, she had this morbid curiosity which caused her to great interest in the study. While she wanted to do well on this NEWT, she couldn't put as much of a priority on studies of the subject matter as she had certain others. Thankfully, she took good notes over the years which helped her get through her final exam, and put in a good score. -EE

Healing Arts: While Faina was not studying to be a Healer or a Medi-Witch, she took this class to have the practical skills she thought might come in handy in the field, and the background knowledge which could prove useful during an investigation. She took this class seriously, as she understood how mis-learning a Healing Charm could have dire consequences. During her Seventh Year internship, Faina quickly learned she really didn't have the emotional quotient (read: a good bedside manner) needed to be a Healer which was probably just as well. In her NEWT, Faina displayed a solid command of the subject matter, and put up an equally solid grade. -EE

Wandless Magic Practice Class: Faina saw this class as a real challenge, a test of her abilities as a witch, and took to it as such. She trained with her magic Wandless whenever she found an excuse to do so, and would duel Wandless at Dueling Club for extra practice. While not strictly needed for her chosen career, Faina thought it foolish to be reliant on using something she could be disarmed of. The NEWT exam was as tough as she expected, she managed to post a very nice grade for her efforts. -O

Wizard Law: While this class was not a requirement for Auror training, Faina took this class anyway, as she intended to have some legal knowledge when she applied for work. Having a basic knowledge of the law she figured could only help her in getting employment, and if she couldn't be an Auror, she would have this class to fallback on. Needless to say, Faina took this class seriously, as preparing for it required a degree of logic, and an ability to argue in a reasoned fashion. -EE
