Tilting his head up, Willim regarded her through half-lidded eyes, his grin turning cheeky and devious. He'd seen what Fisher was capable of lifting, her muscles were obvious and quite spectacular for a girl, and her statement of sweeping the arm-wrestling matches in port was a little daunting, but shards, it would break up the monotony of lifting and toting in this heat. And she'd seen him match her crate for crate. He wasn't built like she was -- no slab of herdbeast, he -- and he wasn't particularly vain about his physique, but he was pretty proud of the fact there wasn't hardly an ounce of flab on him.

"Yyyyyeah, why not? Could be fun. Should be fun." He fully expected to lose regardless. The boy started back across the Weyr bowl until he reached an abandoned crate. Kneeling next to it, he patted it thoughtfully. "I think this'll do nicely as a surface. Or do we wanna build something a bit bigger out of crates?"

Fisher's face lit up at the offer for arm wrestling, and for the first time in a while since she'd arrived at the Weyr she felt happy. Not that she was unhappy, of course, but rather this was a more nostalgic feel that called her to the seas of home. It was very welcome, and the teen was bound and determined to smash Will into the ground. There was no way he was going to beat her, bar-back or not. "You wanna do best two-outta-three, or just winner take all?"

Her statement was enough to say that she was satisfied, and she knelt down on the side opposite a man who she was slowly considering a friend. A hard press sure, but anyone with muscles and willing to arm wrestle and work hard couldn't be dismissed. Maybe after this arm wrestling was done they'd do something else, like actually get back to work and pretend they weren't slacking off.

"You got a preferred arm?"

"Right arm," Willim said, raising said arm and flexing a little, feeling a bit of pride when his bicep popped nicely. He wasn't nearly as heavily muscled as Fisher was; his work as a barback wasn't as heavy as working aboard a boat must have been. Eyeing her arms, he had a fleeting tremor of 'what have I gotten myself into'. She could snap his arm like a twig easily, he reckoned, if she was of a mind to. Shells, she could easily snap his entire body like a twig. He shook that feeling off, though, and pretty quickly decided he might actually stand a chance of winning against the tall teen. He was starting to consider her a friend, too.

Willim pondered for a moment. "Um, best two out of three, I think." Nodding, he set his elbow on the crate, holding his hand up to receive Fisher's paw. By the First Egg, she was a big girl. Even kneeling across from him, Willim could tell this wasn't going to be an easy contest. But the Candidates who were starting to gather and watch were going to get a show regardless.

Spreading his knees on the ground to brace his body and gripping the edge of the crate with his other hand, he grinned at Fisher. "Ready when you are."

Fisher took a moment to flex her right arm as though to test and see if she was okay with it. Granted she was more or less ambidextrous due to turns at sea preventing her from having a preference, but maybe she'd flexed to try and show Will just what exactly he was getting himself into. He'd positioned himself well enough and taken her hand when she placed it, so there was credit given where due.

"A'ight, best two outta three. Ready? And go." With that she started the pressure, ready to lay down the law and show this landstrider just how tough the seafolk could be.

Nyara was nosy. That’s just how she was in life. Things happened when you paid attention to them. If you didn’t, you missed out on all of the fun. She put down her crate as two other candidates seemed to engage in an arm-wrestling match, turning to join the small, gathering crowd.

Ruunan moved beside her, his eyes wandering from Fisher’s defined form to Willim’s back, then away at an errant, stray cloud. Well now… Was this okay? Were they not going to get into trouble? Sure… between the pair they had probably done double the work of the other candidates… but would the Candidatemaster believe that?

“Come on, Fisher! Show him who’s boss!” Nyaranau cheered from the sideline, startling her half-sibling beside her. He glanced at her from beneath his curls.

“Really?” It may have been a single word, but it held a great deal of doubt.

Nyaranau smacked him upside the head- lightly, but smirked as he staggered a little in surprise. “Of course. I’d put a mark on her any day.” She grinned, almost wolfishly, and Ruunan sighed. Of course she would try to take his hard-earned money. That shouldn’t even have been a surprise.

He was insane for doing this, and he realized it when Fisher flexed her arm. She was going to fling him across the Weyr bowl on the first go. But he couldn't back down now, not after making such a show of challenging her. And who knew, he might actually win a round. Maybe two if he was fortunate! ...Yeah right, maybe if Fisher fell over dead or something…

Willim didn't let his reservations about this show, though; he didn't want to give her any additional edge than those she already had against him. Which were numerous. "All right." He continued to grin at her, his brown eyes making contact with her green ones, pointedly ignoring the broken nose and the scarring and the missing tooth she had. He didn't want to think about how she got any of those. Probably snapped someone's arm off while wrestling them and it whipped around and hit her in the face with the shattered exposed bone.

On Fisher's flatly stated "Go" he immediately tightened every muscle in his body and pushed back for all he was worth. To his complete amazement, there was only an initial movement of his arm backward toward the top of the crate. With some effort he held her steady, even gaining some ground! His grin widened; this was giving him strength of will!

"Hah," he laughed through clenched teeth. "Didn't think I had it in me, did ya?"

Honestly she hadn't thought he had it in him, and Fisher was watching the young man's face and the different sort of emotions that were rolling over it. He looked downright determined, like him winning against her was some sort of big deal and, despite her love of never losing, perhaps she ought to be nice and fluff his ego. They'd declared a best two out of three after all.

And so she relaxed her pressure enough that he was able to slam her hand down, though her face didn't show any sign of change. Maybe if Will was any sort he'd have noticed how her muscles had gone slack which allowed the win, but hopefully she'd kept enough flex he might not. They had spectators after all, and it'd be rude for her not to put on a show.

Maybe she'd be more serious if there was money riding on this. "Well, looks like you've gotten the first round." The candidate turned and looked towards Nyaranau, giving the girl an almost flirty wink. "Keep cheerin' for me, I think it might help next round."

Feeling Fisher's push against him weakening, Willim redoubled his efforts to win this first round of the arm-wrestling match. Was she throwing the fight to let him win? He didn't care -- or rather, he did, but only insofar as she was making a show of it, a strategy with which he agreed.

So he slammed her hand down on the makeshift table, then leapt to his feet and gave a victory whoop as if he'd won the entire competition between them, body slick with sweat. "I won the first round! Woo!" His eyes followed Fisher's gaze to focus on Nyaranau and Ruunan, and he gave them both a cheeky grin. "Nah, cheer for me! I'm the sport Candidate here!" He followed this by flexing his bicep on his fightin' arm. How could they NOT cheer for him? Hadn't they seen how much bigger than him Fisher was?

Dropping back to his knees on the ground, Willim braced himself again and grasped Fisher's hand. "All right, round two. Ready… steady… go!" And with that he tensed his entire body, throwing almost everything he had at her, trying to get the advantage.

Will seemed.....extraordinary pleased with himself. Fisher was not sure how she felt about that, seeing as she'd let him win, and thus a repeat was not going to happen. Her dads had taught her to be kind or something blah blah she listened to the best of her abilities but that didn't matter. He was celebrating when he didn't need to be.

Fisher.....was probably a sore loser.

So, naturally, when Will grabbed her hand and declared the start of Round 2 she instantly smashed his arm over onto the crate. "Now we're tied."

There would be no more freebies.

The first round was tense… There was a contest of wills as well as strength- Nyara could practically taste the electric tension that danced between them… fierceness, and a desire never to lose. That was the kind of thing that ought to drive people on a day-to-day basis, and very admirable. A sidelong glance at Ruunan told her that he was not quite so affected, although he did seem transfixed by the arm wrestle.

It was close… so close… and then it wasn’t. Then Willim had won, slamming Fisher’s arm down in victory. Nyara groaned loudly, and Ruun managed a small smile. “See?” He muttered, almost glad she’d put money on it.

Nyara gritted her teeth. “It’s not over yet. Best two out of three, you heard them.” Still, she fished (haha) a mark from her pocket and slipped it into his hand. When Fisher asked for her to continue cheering, Nyara’s grin turned wolfish. “You got it.” And yet, Willim would make a spectacle of his victory. She raised her eyebrows at him, giving him an overly exaggerated roll of his eyes.

Ruunan appreciated just how difficult a position Willim was in- as children, Nyaranau had often beaten him at physical contests. Victory was a rare and precious thing indeed. “Willim, I believe in you!” His voice grew loud with surprising earnestness. Nyaranau glanced at him in shock, then laughed.

“That’s the spirit.” She nudged him in the ribs- causing him to half-stumble once more, before the younger sibling caught himself. He shook his head, then winced in sympathetic pain as Fisher seized round two in a stunning-yet-terrifying victory. “YEAH FISHER!” Nyaranau roared, her enthusiasm translating into a sort of maddened victory jig.

“You can win round three Willim!” Ruunan spoke, trying to project his normally quiet voice over the crowd. Nyara held out her hand, and he returned her mark to her.
