There was a certain reputation that Fahn had gotten about the candidates who had ever had chore duty with her: Stay out of the way. While some had found it a great way to get out of working hard, there were others who would claim to be tired just from watching her - and that day was no different.

Laundry duty wasn't particularly the worst chore to be given as a candidate - collecting, sorting, actually washing and then actually putting things up to dry was a fairly straightforward task.Fortunately, most collecting had been done by the morning's group who had gone off to another task after a mid-day lesson, leaving Fahn and whoever was fated to join her beginning with sorting. Except that she hadn't been able to hold still and sorting?

Well, she was already halfway through it.

Another candidate with a particular reputation was on midday laundry duty—but this one’s notoriety was of a somewhat grimmer breed. He entered the room with a quick glance about, taking stock through the veil of black hair that hung over his face. One girl was stationed amidst the washtubs, small piles of clothes and bedding laid out around her, apparently sorted. There were several much larger piles of unsorted items. Another candidate edged past him with a basket which she upturned over top of one of those piles, then turned on her heel and walked straight back out. Even after the morning round of collection, the supply of things to wash was never ending at High Reaches. Though the sorting girl was not facing away, he often still managed to startle people if they weren’t paying attention to their surroundings, so he used the other’s much noisier entrance as the announcement of his presence, crossing the space with his usual fluid, silent steps. Without a word, he slipped his hand into one of the girl’s sorted piles—white bed sheets and pillow covers—and retrieved a red knit sock that hissed with static as it was pulled away from its hiding place. He flicked it onto the pile with dark colors, then moved on to begin sorting one of the larger piles.

"Hello! Hello. Hi!" Each person who wandered through, even if they shouldn't have been noticed from where Fahn was standing, was given their own greeting - and Gru was no acception. He'd entered more quietly than anybody usually did, but silence usually meant mischief for her life experiences. A quiet little sister was one getting into loads of trouble elsewhere, after all. Her attention was more pointedly drawn, however, when the older-young-man drew close enough to start going through what she'd already sorted. "I alrea-...dy...oh." she trailed off as the red sock was tossed to another pile, though one perpetually bouncing leg seemed to increase in its restless movement. How'd she miss that one so obvious? How'd he-

Fahn immediately tossed herself so she leaned on a sorted basket of laundry, the pile swaying under her weight and the way she rocked back and forth on her feet ever so slightly to look at him. "I didn't even see that! How'd you- Oof!" the pile of laundry shifted under her arms as she rocked forward, throwing her onto it and her off balance for a moment before she perked right back up, smile never faltering. "How'd you know that was there?" Then, almost immediately after she added; "I'm Fahn, by the way! You're...." she squinted, scrunching up her nose as if in deep thought. Oh, she knew this. "G......." she trailed off as if trying to remember more than that. Oh, she'd been working really hard on actually remembering the other candidate's names....

Shards.

The girl seemed a bit agitated that he’d found that sock. The little patch of red standing out against the white hadn’t been hard to see from where he was, but could have been easily missed while handling the crumpled white sheet it clung to. In his experience, people usually got upset about inane things like this because they were either self-flagellating for their mistake, or because they were “competitive.” As if laundry sorting were something worth competing over. But this one didn’t seem like the type. Her strange leg movements indicated extreme nervousness, if nothing else.

She executed a small series of awkward near-falls after purposely throwing herself off balance to lean on a pile of laundry. It was a wonder she didn’t end up introducing herself from the floor. The man tilted his head forward, looking down through the thick forelock of black hair that fell across his face. “Gru. It’s very nice to meet you.” As usual, he recited the polite greeting he was taught, almost sounding as if he were speaking a foreign language, knowing the gist of the sentence but not the meaning of the actual words.

Without further ado, he went to work. It wasn’t a dismissive action, for he kept himself facing the girl as he began sorting the closest pile. He also unconsciously remained half-facing the door, senses trained on it in case someone should enter.

"That's it! Nice to meet you, Gru!" Fahn's was all smiles that were big enough to show her teeth, still half bouncing on one leg. It was almost as though holding one spot still would just divert all of the energy in her body to some other place where it would leak like water from a bucket. He didn't seem particularly interested in chatting, but that didn't keep her from seeming entirely attentive to his silence. Some people were at least a bit more interesting in their actions than words.

Too bad laundry was generally a boring chore, and if Gru was one of those sorts, this wasn't going to be a grand display of such a thing. He just seemed a little tense and that was all. Some folks were simply that way.

So she seemed at least somewhat inclined to get on her own sorting, pushing herself up off of her pile of laundry and making sure she didn't topple it over. Her question about the sock hadn't been answered, but she apparently didn't care anymore. Instead, she began to sort her own pile of laundry - though perhaps with less thoroughness than Gru was. Which was likely how the first error had happened in the first place.
