“Look at them all! Can you imagine V’mel trying to train all of them at once? It will be chaos. Glorious chaos.” Veltanna told Karone happily. They were at the sands entrance peering in. There was no doubt that the gold mothers knew they were there. Veltanna hoped that as long as they stayed out and stayed respectful to the eggs they wouldn’t get in trouble. “Aren’t they just beautiful?”

“Do you think that yours might be in there?” Veltanna had stood at many clutches over the years and wasn’t too concerned if hers wasn’t there. A little concerned because she was getting tired of being a candidate but she also had time. The perfect dragon for her could come at any time, now or later. She would be ready. Still, Veltanna was aware that many of the newer candidates were anxious at every clutch that went past without impression.

Following the tradition of thousands of candidates over ages past, Karone was lingering about the Sands entrance with his fellow candidate during a break. He stared across the heated space, his eyes taking in the sight of the terribly magnificent queens, trailing down the curves of their golden forms to the impossible number of brightly-colored eggs at their feet. There was a glimmer of a sort of agony in those eyes as they traced the round shapes, imagining what might be inside. “Yes... Beautiful.”

At her next question, he glanced up at the statuesque girl beside him, craning his head back. In his old life, he’d grown used to things coming easily, to take a few steps, speak a few words, or merely wave his hand at times, and have it in short order. The stark contrast here, while he didn’t mind it in the beginning, had become jarring. He’d expected to be in the air fighting thread by now, taking revenge for that dead life, his dead brothers. This would be the fourth time he stood before the saviors of Pern, offering himself up to be judged as worthy… or worthless. For some time now, he’d begun to wonder if the latter was true. “I want it to be there, more than anything else.”

She could hear some of the trouble in his voice even as she didn’t look at him. Veltanna did turn a little at the last statement. “That is a dangerous want.” It was very dangerous to want a dragon above all other things. The fixation wasn’t healthy for rider or eventual dragon. There was a lot of room in there for disappointment and resentment. Still, she understood it. “I hope it is fulfilled.”

Turning back to look at the eggs she contemplated the beautiful shells. “Do you think the babies can hear us?” It was getting close to the time of the Touching she thought. “Is it cheating to hang around I wonder? If they can, maybe we should anyway.”
