Her words meant nothing; an unnecessary apology that was merely wasting time. He was glancing over her head toward his table again, thoughts beginning to move back to his immediate goal. The words just before the pause drew his amber eyes back to the dark ones of the girl. At first, he stared uncomprehendingly, but then... So many from within his hold were... He may be...

Yunara went white, the girl clutching the forgotten tea pot as horror settled within her slender breast. Oh brightest stars, what had she been thinking? One could not simply blurt out such words! Caught between wanting to scamper back into the kitchen and needing to make right her wrongs, she hesitated a moment. "It is not known here how many lives were lost," she said tentatively. "But... there were many. Almost all holdings outside of Telgar Hold and within were... were destroyed."

Almost all? But he’d thought… he’d assumed the damage had gone little further than Telgar proper itself. Certainly it hadn’t reached as far as Rusadh. But Yunara had believed him dead. She would have had no reason to believe he was anywhere other than his home when Thread fell. And that meant she must have heard that…
Karou whirled, nearly falling because of his stiff leg in his haste to exit the shop. He would not believe it unless he saw with his own eyes.
