User ImageName: So'obai (soh-oh bye )
Age: 20
Nameday: 3540.03.18
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Gray Ace
Weyr: Western
Rider Rank: Weyrling
Previous Rank/Craft: Weyrbrat
Physical Description: Mousy ash-brown hair, light brown eyes, pale skin
Personality:
Punctual but quiet. He does not stick out in the minds of those around him. He prefers it that way but he tends to be passed over for things like promotions. His only distinctions come from his actions. In the air, he and his Green are phenomenal, which should get them noticed. And he can be fun at parties and with a little alcohol in him, though he has yet to make an embarassment of himself (hopefully it stays that way).

A stickler for following the rules, protocol, and the like, but has no personal moral code, no inherent kindness. He will perform tasks required of him and knows all the rules by heart, though he does not care whether others break the rules or not. In fact, he does not follow them because he believes in them, but only to get his responsibilities completed. If someone messes up or prevents him from completing his tasks, he does not really care. On another note, he is not kind. The Golden Rule is a private joke to him and if someone needs any kind of assistance, he will not help unless called upon to do so.

He is a cold guy. Polite but distant, one gets the impression that he may not mean the pleasantries that spill from his mouth. If asking for a favor, well, they are probably wasting his time, and the air about him feels just a little bit cooler. However, he is polite enough that he might make a good politician or ambassador for the Weyr. Someday.

In his free time, So'obai genuinely enjoys attending his dragon. She will part from the other dragons just for him. He loves little more than to sit lean against her and feel the wind tousle his hair. He also likes to swim with her, racing her (and always losing).
Positive Trait List: Punctual, Stickler (for rules), Polite.
Negative Trait List: Quiet, Conscionless, Frosty.
History:
As a child, this weyrbrat really fell through the cracks. He never knew his parents and siblings, and frankly could care less. Unfortunately that did mean that he made no lasting connection or bond with others. But he perservered, learning how to manipulate people so that he could get what he needed. As for what he wanted, he got a little of that as well, but he never cared enough to keep items for sentimental value, attended no sentimental occasions, and formulated no ambitions to speak of.

The one thing he has enjoyed is his right as a child of the Weyr to attend hatchings. As soon as he was old enough he Stood, although for several Turns he was turned down by every hatchling. Bronzes, Browns, and Blues, he expected one of these, not a Green. But there you have it, he was "good enough" for a Green. In his opinion that is perfectly fine, even if he gets teased for being a Greenrider. He's not really sure why people may not like them, and like their riders even less. The stigma does not really reach his comprehension.

Other: Theme: Snow Monkey Plum tea. Soobai is the early blooming plum in Japan. Nihonzaru is the Japanese name for the Japanese macaque, or snow monkey.

DRAGON
Name: Nihonzaruth
Age: One Turn
Color: Green
Size: 20'
Physical Description: She is a whip-fast little green with a long tail and body. She can turn on a dime and sprint through the air with the best of them. Her stamina is rather low, but if she paces herself she can last about half a Fall, which is about average for a Green anyway. If it is a tough one, say with fiesty, gusty winds, she can only last about a quarter of a Fall.
Personality: She is a very social dragon who enjoys Weyr gossip. She will share what she learns, the best of the best, with her rider. She loves to be cared for, and her rider sees fit to pamper her with oil and bathing. She likes the ritual and bonding she feels with him, even if he does not recognize it for what it is. Her hope is that someday he will find another human to bond with too.
Positive Trait List: Communal, Hygenic, Punctual.
Negative Trait List: Snarky, Forgetful, Lazy.

Well... I would appreciate some QCing if needed. I feel like he might be missing something but not sure what. Thanks!

First of all, I would like you to steer away from phrases that dictate how all others think of him.

But the most most important thing that he is lacking is empathy, without with he could not Impress. He doesn't need a ton of it, but he cannot be without even a modicum of kindness. Where is the core of goodness, however small, that drew his dragon to him in the first place? This is something all riders must have, even if they are jerks. It's fine for him to be kind of a d**k, but the fact he's totally without a moral compass and lacks any kindness whatsoever, and thinks the golden rule is joke pushes the boundary of what a rider should be.

If he's a weyrbrat then he had an entire Weyr full of family. They don't fall through the cracks because the Weyr is a very tight knit group. This would be different if he were from a Hold, because the setup isn't so all for one and one for all. Weyrs are also smaller than Holds in the grand scheme of things and they have an entire creche devoted to ensuring that children are raised with everything that they need.

This child reads as a borderline sociopath and frankly I won't allow that in a rider. A nonrider would be fine.

He was at Western Weyr, which is the last place he'd be teased for being a greenrider. He'd have been raised around riders of all different stripes and dragons of all colors, and been told that they were equally good.

Nihonzaruth is fine. But So'obai needs a lot of work to fit into the setting, especially at Western. Please contact me if you have any questions or quote me in this thread.
