Deep in the western reaches of Starlight Bayou, Lagniappe is a group of peculiar ponies who have come together to share both their similarities and their differences in a close-knit, family-like group. Nestled in the humid wetlands, one might think them a rather soggy bunch, but they are, in fact, quite a lively and energetic group - not to mention very friendly to anyone venturing into their territory!
Out of the waterlogged lands of their bayou home, the herd has raised up their own little town, so to speak; on stilts and magically grown twisted trees, a number of open homes and buildings rise out of the verdant wet. Not only houses, but a number of community hubs dangle in seemingly precarious positions above the water below - a large kitchen and grill, an area devoted to playing games, even a series of gardens forming walkways between the platforms! This center is, upon closer inspection, completely self sufficient - likely explaining the herd's rather isolated community mindset. They need little to nothing from outside lands, and as such tend to remain with their own for very long stretches of time; this has led to an unusual development of local vernacular and customs, making them seem rather eccentric to the odd visitor.
Yet, even with that in mind, these ponies are always ready for guests! Lost explorers and travelers happening upon them by accident are greeted with raucous excitement and always treated to a feast of unusual 'vittles' - full of spice and unusual, wild ingredients, these dishes are always something to remember... Positively or negatively, well - that's up to the individual, isn't it?
Despite their pleasant attitudes towards guests, however, the Lagniappe herd is protective of its own. While they welcome others to stay for a night or two, they are often rather suspicious of different ponies trying to move in for a longer visit, with past experiences of others trying to take advantage of their construction skills and magics, not to mention the rarer resources of the bayou they've learned to tap along the way, leaving them soured and uncertain of those they don't know well. They are, rather contrary to their initial friendliness, only really receptive to those of their own ilk staying, finding their familiarity comforting and allowing them to open up more readily. As such, it's typically uncommon to find anyone who isn't at least a little bit froggy living in the herd - even the sweetest individuals have their faults, right?

Lagniappe is a silly herd about cajun frogs. They live on their own, and usually don't get out much. They love visitors, but if you're not a frog, it's gonna be hard for you to join up. That's just how they are.
To join, a pony must either: 1. Have two of the three possible frog morph features (long tongue, round cheeks, or lack a tail entirely). or 2. Be extremely close with a member of Lagniappe who can vouch for them.
Members of Lagniappe ... can live in their settlement! They are pretty much entirely self-sufficient, only needing to send someone to other towns if a major piece of equipment breaks. Their technology is, as a result, a little behind, but they teach quite a bit about living out in the bayou - from boat building to construction to magical plant wrasslin' growing, they have a plethora of unusual skills to offer. Also, they cook real good, assumin' you like crawdads and spicy fish and a whole mess of hard-to-identify greens.
Members can also learn the local pidgin; Lagniappe ponies have their own language! It is its own creole tongue, borne out of a mixture of dialects of those who end up staying and their own long-past made-up terms for things and happenings in their local home. This mixed-up hodgepodge is accentuated by a heavily-slurred accent, with many of their words adapting for the exceptionally agile tongues of the froggy folk. To those that manage to learn it, the local language could easily be used to speak in private in the open, since it is a rather remote secret.
Once you're a member, the group doesn't mind if you leave - but why would you? Most lifetime members of Lagniappe don't understand why anyone would want to travel, but you're always family... even if they might gossip a little behind your back while you're gone. Frogs are noisy, you know?
