The forest was thick and, because of that, quite dark, despite the fact that it was still daylight outside. Kipenzi entered the woods, ever the adventurer, with a curiosity like that of a young foal. Beside her trotted Akida, her small wolf companion, who remained quite silent, as he always did. He was her constant, quiet friend. But she could always use more.
A few moons ago, she'd separated from her best friend, Kintori. Kintori had met a new mare and fallen head-over-heels - she heard whispered that they were lifemated. Kipenzi was happy for her friend, but a bit sad for herself. After her one brief encounter with a handsome stallion names Asar, she was left with two foals to care for. That changed everything in her - she found herself desiring a more monogamous relationship, after seeing how rewarding maternity and being maternal truly could be. It softened her, the previously feisty mare was now doting and kind, not as sassy-mouthed as she used to be.
And though she desired companionship in the form of another handsome stallion by her side, she did enjoy her days wandering around with the little wolf. She just wished she could meet someone who was able to offer, well, more than Akida could. It just wasn't the same, and she yearned for something more.
Peering about the dark forest, Kipenzi thought she heard some rustling nearby. Her ears flicked and she glanced down and back at Akida, whose ears were also trained on the sound. Could there be someone nearby?

The rustling that had caused Kipenzi to stop in her track turned into much, much more. It sounded like a full-blown struggle. Her ears flicked this way and that, and she decided to trot forward. If someone needed help, she was certainly not going to let them suffer! Sadly, Kipenzi did not have the greatest sense of self-preservation. It had gotten her into trouble before, but this time she hoped was different.
That was, until she came into eyesight of the large (was he large? or was it just the massive wings?), looming stallion with his fangs bared. Before she had time to be nervous, her mind immediately clocked the strangeness of it all. Beyond the stallion being, well, quite striking, he had fangs. And a uni horn. How the hell did that work?
Stopping just short of him - giving him enough space that she didn't appear to be threatening him, she sized him up. He was, well, gorgeous. A long, flowy mane (albeit sodden and tangled), and bright eyes like ice on a frigid winter's day. His wings, although they looked rather magnificent at their height, also seemed to be weighed down - were the feathers dripping? Kenzi looked about quickly and decided there was no water source immediately nearby, and it certainly hadn't rained without her knowledge. What was going on here?
Remembering herself, she decided to just... ask. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to frighten you, but... are you okay? I heard you while out on a stroll and it sounded like you were in a bit of trouble, but you certainly look capable to me..." She widened her bright eyes, trying (in vain) to look youthful and innocent. She was an older mare so it was quite tough, but older tended to mean less-threatening. Unless you were dealing with a walker or a Kalona, but it was evident upon a glance at her that Kipenzi was neither. Just a harmless, regular Soquili. Or so she liked to think.
