The harpers were busy preparing for the upcoming hatching and subsequently, the feast. Weyrsinger L’mul had helped with direction and preparations. Whenever he had a free moment he would peer over at the younger harpers who’d paired up. They were sitting in a corner playing a familiar tune. Those two certainly complimented each other. He didn’t know their history, but he knew chemistry when he saw it. Those two worked together as well as strings and voice. They played together well, too. And if he encouraged they practice together, what harm was there in hoping something sparked between them?

“Why don’t you practice that one again?” He suggested, as he walked over. “Then get something to drink. You don’t want to run out of steam before the hatching!”

Y'io glanced up at L'mul as he was going over the sheet music with Mavri. He hadn't really wanted to be paired up with her -- he was still working out his issues and feelings about his former love -- but she was the best gitar player here. And he knew her style of playing, her variations of tempo and flourishes, like he knew his own hand. So reluctantly (and yet not so reluctantly), he'd agreed.

Sitting on Y'io's shoulder, little blue Descant waited expectantly for the music to begin again. The small firelizard had been singing along with the music the two harpers had been playing, and now he chirped in Y'io's ear, trying to get him to start playing his flute. The dark-haired man absently rubbed Descant's eye ridges as L'mul spoke. "Yes, Weyrsinger," he nodded, then looked over at Mavri for her response. She was never so beautiful as when she was playing her gitar, and Y'io forced his gaze back down to the parchment between them to keep from staring.

Feelings were complicated things, especially when you still felt something for someone you thought had betrayed your heart.

Mavri looked up when L’mul walked over. She gave him a small smile and returned her gaze to the sheet music. She loved playing with Y’io, she knew his passion for music and his style, the way he moved along with it. She’d been quick to ask if he’d wanted to pair up with her. He was easily one of the most talented harpers here.

“A second time, then?” She asked, looking to Y’io. Her hand had remained in position, on the chord she’d ended on. “Do you want to lead, Y’io?”

"Yes," Y'io nodded, bringing the flute up to his lips. Closing his eyes, not bothering to look at the music, he began to play the slow-ish, sweetly lilting song, intended for a slower dance. His body swayed as he played, bringing out an expressive quality to the music that was hard to match by others.

But Mavri could match it.

He played through the melody, then opened his eyes and nodded at Mavri to begin playing, though he was confident she knew when to bring the gitar part in.

Mavri joined when he nodded, but she’d been about to join in as it was. Y’io made the song beautiful with his flute. It was a good choice for dancing at the upcoming hatching feast. She followed along with ease. The slower tune was easy to match.

L’mul listened for a bit and nodded before leaving to look over his own music. He wondered when those two would figure it out. They played so well together, it was as if they’d had turns of experience doing so.

Allowing himself to get lost in the music, Y'io closed his eyes again and listened to the lilting tune he and Mavri were weaving. Each was complementing perfectly what the other was playing; when one would take the lead, the other harmonized with the melody, so that the two of them played like a single unit. It was one of those moments musicians dreamed about, where everything came together and magic was made. Even little Descant, who loved to sing along with Y'io's flute, was quietly listening.

As the song wound down to its conclusion, Y'io and Mavri still kept in time with each other, slowing their performance down until the last notes rang sweetly through the rehearsal room. Descant cheeped in the stillness that followed, causing a rare chuckle to sound from Y'io as he opened his eyes to regard both his little pet and his fellow musician.

"I think we've got this song down," he said to Mavri with the faintest of smiles tickling the corner of his mouth. "Ready to give the next song a go?"

Mavri knew she wouldn’t have words for how their music worked together. Whether it was from the turns of practice and study they’d done together or something else, it was special.

“I think we do,” she agreed, returning his smile. It was such a treat to see that smile! “Would you like to lead?” She asked. She reached a hand to Descant and stroked his cheek with a finger. “Or should I?”
