Brook Knapp Exams ~ NEWTs (7/7) Graded!

xxxASTRONOMY ~ Axxx

■ Brook wasn’t horrible at Astronomy, she did enjoy looking to the sky and seeing the weather patterns, but that wasn’t astronomy, that was meteorology. Oh well, all the same field... kind of? She particularly enjoyed Jupiter, and was able to write quite a bit about that planet and it’s moons. However, she probably spent too much time on the one planet, why would she know something about Saturn? About Mars? Comets? That was all dumb. Weather was where it was at - and with Jupiter having that giant storm all the time it was the best planet by far.

xxxCHARMS ~ EExxx

■ Brook had been doing well at Charms, she had Gus tutor her some, and had her brother help her. However, she lost herself when they were asked about a cheer charm. Stupid things, they didn’t work. There was no happiness to be found, she had tried. When time was almost up she realized she hadn’t gotten very far, and rushed through her exam, accidentally missing a few, preventing her from doing outstanding, she criticized herself harshly on this. Thankfully, the practical was easy, just a Wingardium Leviosa, swish and flick, it was fine. She could move on.

xxxDEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS ~ EExxx

■ Brook knew the written portion of the examination, it was a breeze. All of her extra studying during quidditch and food paid off. However, when it came to the practical portion she froze, a boggart..turned into a kitten. How terrifying. She eventually got it to turn into a cat wearing a human costume and burst out laughing - sort of a bit disturbed but hey it worked?

xxxHERBOLOGY ~ Pxxx

■ Brook wasn’t great at Herbology, but she tried keeping up with it. She had taken Aldrick’s notes to study with - and apparently they were wrong. She managed to get a poor - but probably only by her practical portion being okay. She did better than Aldrick though, so not a complete failure.

xxxHISTORY OF MAGIC ~ Pxxx

■ History didn’t make sense. There were too many dates to memorize, not enough patterns, and it was all silly really. Of course she knew about some of the facts, she was in Ravenclaw, they were basically quizzed on it everyday. Why would she need to know history? She didn’t, it was fine. She didn’t pass history, but she didn’t get a dreadful, so it was fine indeed, she wouldn’t need it for her career

xxxPOTIONS ~ Oxxx

■ Brook put a lot of time in studying for potions - the start of any good magical chef was being good at potions. She knew the theory behind it, and studied hard for it. Thankfully she was much better at potions than she was at cooking, probably because the potion never had to go into the oven. Overall, she did outstanding, maybe one day she would be outstanding at actually cooking food too.

xxxTRANSFIGURATION ~ EExxx

■ Brook was fine, she loved Transfiguration. She went through her written portion with ease, answering the questions and double checking them before turning them in. Everything changed when she went to her practical though. There was a KITTEN in the room. Sure it was just to vanish the cat and move on, but did they see how evil the little beast was? The needles it had for toes? She eventually calmed enough to cast the spell, incorrectly. She just couldn’t focus enough to get the kitten to vanish, which docked her points a bit.

xxxCARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES ~ Oxxx

■ Brook had always loved creatures, even the non magical ones. Even after the death of Deepak, she found comfort in the creatures. They spoke to her in a way that humans didn’t, so she didn’t let her studies fall any. She wanted to be able to understand them, and know what they wanted, what she could do for them. Somehow, she managed to get through the OWL with an outstanding.

xxxHEALING ~ Txxx

■ What was the point of healing, if you couldn’t save someone who was dying. Her brother had been killed, and no one could heal him from that. No one could heal her broken family. She didn’t show up for her exam and was not surprised by her obvious Troll grade, couldn’t pass if you didn’t show up.

xxxMUSIC ~ Txxx

■ After Deepak died, Brook gave up on music. She tried to keep pushing through the classes, the endless theory and history and lessons, but she couldn’t take it in anymore. She decided she wouldn’t show up for the exam - it would only be hours upon hours of torture for her.

xxxMYTHOLOGY ~ Axxx

■ The beasts were wonderful, even if they were only creatures of the past. Stories were wonderful, and what joy it was that these mythical things happened or may not have happened, but parts stayed around for future generations to enjoy. It wasn’t the same as history, no mythology had more of an imaginative aspect to it, and to this portion was where Brook enjoyed herself with. She didn’t do great at Mythology, but she did better than she did at history for sure

xxxWANDLESS MAGIC ~ EExxx

■ Brook had been doing great at Wandless Magic, focusing on it and getting done what needed to happen. Wandless was important, it was more convenient to summon food to her, especially when her wand wasn’t nearby. However, when it came time for the exam, she couldn’t quite perform the spell work in the practical portion, even with having done wonderful at the theoretical portions. She just couldn’t have as great focus as she had before.

NEWTs

ASTRONOMY - EE
~Brook was in awe by the NEWT Astronomy practical, they got to make their own solar system! She wondered if after their exam was graded if they could take them home and use them as a mobile for their rooms, it would be a neat little project. With that thought in mind, Brook went to work on the system. She had all the planets and some major moons, but she had forgotten one planet, but which one? After thinking over it several times, she shrugged and decided she was done, levitating all the planets to the correct position and calling the NEWT finished. Only afterwards did she cry out, she had forgotten Earth and the Earth's moon.

CHARMS - O
~The charms practical had four parts but they were only allowed to use ten spells. At least that narrowed down the options for what to do. Brook went through the four areas and cast the appropriate spells after consideration of her list and the situation. She passed wonderfully, if only all exams were this easy - maybe she over studied this year.

DADA - O
~Brook was prepared for this, she had talked to Lizzie about her life as a hit wizard, and she knew that Defense was important to pass, and Brook would. Expelliarmus, an easy spell, they learned that forever ago. By time Brook tried the second, third, and fourth door, she was disappointed, this wasn’t that hard? These were all pretty basic spells, and if she had needed more practice she could have done so with the dueling club (had she chosen to attend with her brother being in charge). When she got to the last door, a boggart. She groaned, last time she had faced her biggest fear was a kitten, but she had avoided facing another one since then. She had tried to grow out of her fear, facing Rhea in animagus form, and Dunce, Wren’s cat, coming near her. When the boggart came out it was a rain cloud, ready to release at any moment. She cast ridiculous, and turned the cloud into a giant thing of cotton candy, food, food was good. She passed with flying colors.


POTIONS - O
~After running the cooking club, Brook had really gotten a bit better at potions. As such, she did pretty well with the potion NEWT, making draught of living death. After she had brewed the light pink potion, she took a dropper and put some into a dish with the pixie. After drinking, the pixie passed out. Brook smiled with her success then groaned at her hair, it was disgusting. She passed though, and that was what mattered.

TRANSFIGURATION -EE
~Brook walked into the NEWT and was confused by how empty it was, then when she saw the instructions, to transfigure some part of herself into a mystical creature, she grinned. Rhea would love this NEWT. Brook spoke out loud, “I’ll be transforming my legs into a mermaid tail.” She then cast her spell, and her legs got the appearance of scales, but not actual scales, and not a whole tail. She frowned, how would not getting it done the first time affect her grade? She did it twice more, and the third time was the charm, giving herself a nice mermaid tail. Not great but not horrible. It was a pretty nice tail, maybe she would transfigure her legs again later and go swimming with Rhea, that would be fun.

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES - A
~Brook was excited about creatures and knew enough about the four creatures to identify them, observe their behavior, and made up some things to say what non-field things they could do, and could interact with a couple of them. Truly, her main issue was how they would work with non-related fields. Brook saw the use in creatures for the use of creatures, and because of that she hadn’t studied too much harder for outside uses. Acceptable, but barely passing her Care of Magical Creature NEWT.

MYTHOLOGY - A
~Brook groaned when she saw the note about no wands allowed, had she missed that part of the memo when she was studying for NEWTs? Be creative and tell a story of a myth - she could do this. She began creating a work, and upon completion turned it in. When she went to perform, she pulled out her instrument and spoke the story of a mythone summarized line at a time, performing a bit of music with it each time. Her main issue - she didn’t speak very loudly for the myth to be heard, receiving acceptable, but not great.
