A sharp inhale in, as the winter’s crisp air filled her lungs. The sting inside only lasted for a moment as she took in the surrounding area’s scent. Always on guard, always cautious, this is how it has always been. Danger loomed in every corner, crevice and under every rock. Safety was never guaranteed, never for Noir. There it was, for a moment a tinge of brightness lighting up her eyes. There were others near, her brain told her that she was supposed to stay away. The voice in her head screaming at her to go the other direction…but her heart, longing for company from the dark world she lived in. No, she shouldn’t. It wasn’t safe for her, it wasn’t safe for them. What if she returned? What if he came for her? She shook off the negative thoughts, and proceeded cautiously. Her hooves crunching in the moldable snow, she remembered seeing foals playing games in the snow. A luxury she was never afforded, for Death awaited her around the corner.
On the rare occasion Noir liked to watch others as they awoke with their families’ just to watch what normal was supposed to look like. Just a glimpse into the life that she never was able to obtain. The joy and happiness spread through family groups, the laughter, the jokes and games…the freedom.
Another step toward the group, she was on the wrong side of the wind. Her ears flattening in annoyance as she started to move on the right side and closer to the family group. Only to just stay out of sight, just for a little while. If only for a moment to watch normal.

Noir moved along the line of the trees, her crimson standing out against the white of the snow though the cover of darkness did help. Her golden hues falling on a cave to see a young stallion with whom she just guessed to be his parents. Parents, such a foreign word…concept. The loving nuzzle, even just the acknowledgement. Did her mother even know she existed anymore? Did she care? Noir had only known what it was like to survive. That meant knowing your surroundings, knowing your enemy and a little bit of blood. She was lucky enough to get by with her physical appeal and words to get by with willing donors. There hadn’t been a time where she had gone long enough without to let the craze drive her mad, at least thats how she was trained.
Her eyes were drawn to the younger male, her head tilting slightly at the ghost-like figures that swirled around him. She had never seen anything quite like them. Were they some sort of curse? They didn’t feel or look harmful. If anything they just seemed to dance around him, it made her curious. Her head followed the pair as they drifted off into the woods, leaving the stallion alone at the entrance of the cave again. The female looked as if she had seen better days, but the couple looked happy. The scene itself was peaceful. Someday, she too would have this peace. She was sure of it. It was then that Noir had not realized she was lost in her own mind again, day dreaming away about the thought of possibly being safe and the very possibility of having a real family. The corner of her mouth twitching just slightly nervously as she started to come back to her senses and put the silly dreams from her thoughts. It was about time for her to get a move on, she couldn’t stay anywhere for too long.
