It has been an especially cold winter. Snow had blanketed the land and the cold nights seemed to go on forever. Yet there was still beauty to be found in the starkness of winter. Holy berries always bloomed plentifully, which brought a splash of vibrant color to the winter landscape. Now that the spring equinox had passed, there was a hint of warmth in the air. Plants that were dormant during the cold winter were now awakening. Flowers bloomed with zealous intent, and a slightly sweet odor filled the air. All around her soq fams and animals were enjoying the warming weather and many young creatures were about to be born. The birds were the first animals to celebrate the changing season. Throughout the forest, birds could be found scavenging for nesting materials. It was an obvious conclusion that coat hair from any soq that had shed recently due to the changing seasons would be found in the birds' nest. Sumire sighed as she gazed at a nearby bluebird. The bluebird was residing on a branch directly over her head, and it kept gazing at her in a fascinated manner. Slowly it titled its head back in forth as if contemplating an idea. “Shoo go away!” Sumire nickered in a semi-threatening manner. The bluebird puffed up its orange chest in a threatening manner but did not move. Its beady black eyes still regarded her with intent. “Stupid birdbrain! I’m tired of these little twitter-pated fools” Sumire muttered clearly even the bird knew that her words were all bark and no bite. Slowly Sumire fluttered her wings leaving the air thick with glowing blue dust. Yet the bluebird seemed unimpressed it let out a series of clicking sounds. To Sumire's ears, the clicks seemed to almost sound like laughter. She stopped her front hoof and let out a long dramatic snort.

For Calavera, this Springtime was bittersweet because his emotions were in turmoil. Usually, he enjoyed the first days of spring. During the winter months, the desert lands were wonderful. Life during the cold months was easy. True there were areas of the desert that received heavy snowfall and the nights could be bitter. Yet he had grown up in harsh conditions of the desert. The environment had, over the years, molded him and strengthened him like metal fused by soq artisans. While he usually spent the warmer months with his maternal family in the woods, the desert would forever be his true home.
Calavera frowned his face as his thoughts raced. He wondered once again why he should be spending spring not in his beloved desert but in the dark woodlands and open fields of the soq lands. The desert would have received it winter rains at this time of year, and the snow would be slowly melting from the nearby mountains. Everywhere flowers would be blooming, and hummingbirds would have migrated to enjoy the rare taste of desert flower nectar. t sands even seemed beautiful against the field of purple flowers that seemed to appear yearly as if by magic. At this time of year the sunsets even had a hit of pink and purple which always secretly pleased him.
At this time of year it was atypical of him to be away from his home. Though he yearned to go back he once again remembered the reason for his visit. His father had been missing for several years and he feared that the heartbreak was slowly sapping the strength out of his mother. Lately, she seemed to become more listless and depressed. Calavera knew that she was quietly letting go of the hope that sustained her. Her actions made it clear that she now thought it was a possibility that her mate might never return. The desert lands were not a safe place for the weak of heart, it provided multiple dangers. These threats were always willing to quickly end the life of the unwary. Calavera feared for his mother and he decided to listen to his instincts which told him that the two of them needed to set off on a journey. During the summer months, it was customary for the two of them to visit her family in the woodlands. This year he recommended that they start their journey not in late spring but during the fall months. Surprisingly the journey had been easy and uneventful. He missed the casual banter of his friend Trehan, who usually accompanied him during his travels. However, he had learned to appreciate the silence of this trip. At times he had even gotten his mother Regin to laugh and remise about her younger days. Winter in the woodlands with his mother’s family had been an experience. They were a friendly bunch of soq which contrasted greatly with their knightly demeanor. The family served as guardians for the woodlands and they guarded the boundaries between the soq lands and the Seelie lands. While his heart longed for the spring beauty of the desert lands, he did acknowledge that the change of scenery was acting as a balm for his mother’s wounded heart.

Daria’s body showed how happy she was her steps even had a little extra bounce. It was springtime and the snow had finally given away to spring flowers. Spring and Fall were by far her favorite seasons. Currently, her father Dacian was out on patrol, which had given her plenty of free time. Logically she knew that her dad was spoiling her in his own way. Daria should have been patrolling today but Dacian had insisted on taking all the shifts. He knew that she enjoyed the first spring flowers and he had come up with the lame excuse that she needed to reacquaint her cousin with the secret forest paths. Daria thought her father should have made a less obvious excuse, after all her cousin Calavera was no stranger to the woodlands. He and her aunt Regin spent every summer day walking throughout the woodlands. Daria doubted that her cousin needed her to act as his guide, yet she was unwilling to call her father out on his little act of decent. She would enjoy the spring flowers as her father wished. Daria would even try to get her stoic cousin to smile. She knew that he was anxious about his mother and was feeling homesick. Nevertheless, her father and cousin were born during the same year, so they had a brotherly relationship. It would have been more beneficial for her father to spend this time with Calavera. Still, she would do her best and try to find something that would help her cousin laugh.

Sumire knew that the bird was eyeing her shiny blue and gold mane hairs. Still, she was unwilling to have a bird pluck the hair from on top of her head. Currently, the hair from her black coat was shedding and falling in clumps throughout the forest. Yet, the nervy little bird seemed intent on her mane hairs. Clearly, this little bird was too twitter-pated and held lofty ideals for its nest.
From its branch, the bird quickly flapped its wings in a precocious manner. Its shiny eyes looked at her with dangerous intent before it let a shrill war cry.
Sumire tried to duck her head, but the bird dived at her with sharp, outreached claws. She felt a quick air pulse before feeling the bird’s little talons on her scalp. She screamed in outrage and in pain.
How dare this foolish puffed-up bird attack her. She was more than four times its size and could easily hurt this tiny being. She lurched from side to side trying to detach the bird from her scalp, but the bird had dug in and hairs from her mane prevented it from escaping. Which it now wanted to do. Clearly, even the bird was regretting its own actions.

Daria had been trying her best to liven up the mood. Still, her cousin seemed lost in his thoughts and paid little attention to her thoughtful comments and quip one-liners. Yet now that she reflected on her surroundings, she realized that the quiet forest was being uncharacteristically noisy. Daria turned to her cousin whose face was hardening in thought. At the same moment, they realized the sound was familiar to familiar it sounded exactly like the angry voice of their grandmother. With haste, they hurried in her direction ready to face her attacker.

Calavera followed the swift heals of his cousin as they raced through the woodlands. He was ready to face the threat and protect his grandmother. However, the sight of his grandmother's attacker was unexpected. Instead of a large predator, the perpetrator was a tiny bluebird that seemed intent on causing damage to his mom-mom’s head. Calavera rushed forward and clicked his teeth the bird flinched but refused to fly off. Realizing the situation Calavera lounged forward which caused the bird to flail. Yet Calavera’s intent was not to harm the bird; instead, the victim of his attack was a few strands of his grandmother’s mane hairs. The bird was now free from the mane that had entangled it. It flew off clutching a few blue and gold hairs and shouting out cries of victory. Once Calavera knew his grandmother was ok, he attempted to hold back his laughter. His grandmother now sported a small magnificent bald patch on the back of her head. Trying hard, he could not prevent himself from laughing when he heard his grandmother shout at the victorious bird, “Stupid bird!” [The end][word count 1590]
