Long elegant silver hair was cascaded around her as she stood on the cliff. Her silver eyes seemed to glow in the dark night as she looked upon what was once her home. Her eyes burned with tears that threatened to fall. She didn't have the time to mourn him or her home. She shouldn't have even stopped now to look back but she wanted one last look upon what she would always miss.
Nerezza had heard the human's tones when they spoke about her and her mate as if they were something to be feared. She meant them no harm but was always curious about them. She never could quite stay away from them or their homes. He had warned her time and again to stop lurking in the shadows. He just wanted to keep her safe and close to him.
She never would have imagined that the humans would attack. They had meant to kill them both just because of their appearances. She was the reason why it happened. The humans had grown tired of being afraid and decided to finally get rid of her. She had no idea why they were afraid of her because she wasn't a threat or dangerous.
She had hoped and prayed that he would be running behind her but once she heard his cry of pain, she knew she would never see him again.
He had always told her that she was breath takingly beautiful. The memories came rushing forward in her mind and her heart felt as if it was shattering over and over with each moment.
He had adored her, protected her and had been her other half. She had been his ancient queen. That was what he called her when they were alone. He had believed her to come from some place unknown and old because of her markings. He believed that her body was the very clone of the night sky. A black as night coat that shimmered and glowed in the dark with her elegant and dark golden swirling marks. He'd told her time and time again that it was as if the moon had kissed her hair making it silver and that the moon rested behind her eyes making them shine. She'd always told him he is crazy in her sweet voice. She had enjoyed it when he praised her beauty because it made her feel truly special. She had been special to him.
He was her soul mate, the one that was fated to grow old with her. She never thought he would not be with her.
She couldn't hold her stare anymore once the red and orange flames started. They were burning their home! She wanted to scream out and release some of the pain she was holding. It wasn't an option. He had given her a chance to run for safety and she couldn't let his life mean nothing by getting caught. He wanted her to live without him but she wanted to die to be with him. It was because of his sacrifice that she made herself move.
She ran blindly away from the cliff, she had no idea where she could go and be safe. She just knew that she needed to get away because her life depended on it. Nerezza raced down the path that humans had made desperately hoping she didn't find any more. It was dusk when he had came back to her with warning that humans were coming with weapons. She didn't want to believe him when he told her. She hated herself a bit because if she had taken him seriously, he may have been there with her now. It was starting to get dark as the sun went down the rest of the way and fear slammed her. Her markings were highly visible at night because of their slight glow. She never understood why parts of her seemed to glow and shine. She couldn't remember anything about her past; her parents, where she came from, why she was here among humans, nothing. Her life had meaning once she met him and discovered their bond.
She forced herself to focus and slow as she hit a tree line. Her glowing silver eyes scanned the area carefully. She didn't hear anything that sounded like the humans nor did she see any fire. She wanted to believe she was safe but there wasn't enough distance behind her yet.
She took a deep breath and stepped into the shelter of the trees. She had no idea how far they stretched or what laid beyond but she had to keep going. The night seemed to stretch on for eternity with no sun rise in sight. She felt as if she couldn't rest her tired and aching body safely until the sun rose to eliminate the obvious glow of her markings.
She slowly emerged from the tree line and looked around cautiously. There didn't seem to be any living thing around. It was a vast plain that had flowers mixed among the grass in various spots. She hated that there was no cover for her if something came along. There was no other choice.
The humans hadn't caught up to her yet but she didn't want to risk it by stopping here. Her body was begging her to stop and rest but she couldn't give in. She put one trembling leg in front of the other and made herself go out into the open. She was going to survive. She owed it to him. Thoughts about what he would do if he were there started to creep into her thoughts. She couldn't afford the distraction and imagined a wall going up to stop the thoughts. Her heart ached and she desperately wanted him to be there but that was obvious.
She slowly made her way across the plain, senses on high alert. She made it about half way before she heard branches snap behind her. Panic gripped her tight and she didn't chance a glance behind her. Her black hooves thundered against the ground as she made herself gallop at full speed the rest of the way. It could have been nothing but she wasn't going to investigate. She was shocked to see that the plains continued but had a river that she didn't see from the other side. She didn't even pause to think about it, she raced into the water and ran straight ahead into the water. She was going to head as far west as she possibly could. She would force herself to run, walk and hide until the sun rose high into the sky.
Exhaustion coursed through her body like her blood was pumping in her veins. Each and every step she took, she was unsure if she could take another. Her body was finally going to give out on her. She just managed to step from the river before her legs buckled and she fell onto the grass. It was cool beneath her and she enjoyed the feel of it against her warm body. She didn't want to close her eyes, she wanted to keep watch but her body would no longer listen to her.
Her silver eyes slowly closed as she drifted off to sleep. It was a peaceful sleep for a while but wasn't meant to last. The flames engulfed their home but this time she could hear his agonized cries of pain and torment. She couldn't see him anywhere and had no idea what was happening to him. How could she get to him!? In the blink of an eye, it all changed, she was running for her life with the humans on her trail. She couldn't let them get her and end her! This time it was like she was someone else watching her race across the plains. She watched herself go up and down a mountain, traverse through thickets, brush, and forests. Her journey didn't come to an end until she was face to face with someone new. She couldn't fully make out all the details of the horse. They were a black silhouette. They didn't seem to be a threat, she was in no danger but she couldn't shake the feeling of unease. Would she lead the humans to this poor soul? She looked past where her body was standing with the other and waited with held breath for humans to appear. As if on cue, a large group of them appeared from out of the shadows of the trees. She watched in awe as the black silhouette of a horse moved in front of her. The silhouette took a defensive stance and held their ground as the humans came closer. This was when everything changed. The humans seemed to turn tail and disappear without so much as an attack.
She jolted awake as the last human disappeared back into the shadows. Could it be possible that this horse was going to be her salvation? She had way more questions than she did answers and found herself wishing that he was there again. She didn't know where to go, who to trust, or what to eat out here in the foreign land. She stared up at the sky as the darkness softened and changed into sunrise. Was the dream perhaps a message sent from him to guide her? Did he know how lost she was? She blinked tears away as she contemplated the dream. Should she try and follow its path? What else did she have to lose?
She tested her body and its muscles to see how much of her strength she'd recovered. It was enough that she could continue although at a slower pace. She wouldn't be winning a race any time soon. Her silver hair now matted with sticks, mud and other debris added unwanted weight to her as she slowly stood. The added weight made her want to keep her head down. There wasn't much she could do about her hair right now. She would have to ignore it until she was somewhere completely safe. It took a lot of strength to hold her head up high so she could look around. Her silver eyes focused back on the west, with one foot in front of the other at a time and carefully, she managed a slow pace moving forward. She was set on trying to find this horse and possibly her new home.
