What happened before...
It had been years ago, when she was still new to the darkness when Wyrsa had given birth. And almsost as long ago when Tlocatl had led as mismatched a band of stallions as could be to rescue the children before she could...find another use for their tender flesh.
Little did they know the real reason why she allowed - why she permitted, knowingly - the boys to rescue the pair of baskets.
The firstborn, the eldest and strongest, was not one of those two. The Skinwalker felt some vague urge to see her lineage continue onwards, and the first basket that she had hidden ahead of time was her choice in that regard.
When she saw the foal emerge for the first time, Wyrsa knew her choice was justified. The little girl clearly showed her father's Kalona blood, but was as wingless as the Skinwalker who fought down the urge to devour such a helpless looking creature. Then the filly's yellow eyes narrowed and her long tail cut savagely through the air as looked around hungrily. Wyrsa knew then a pride that may not have been completely maternal, but was certainly related.
And it only took watching Visum rip apart the pidgeon Wyrsa had caught for her to make it clear.
