*~The Who/What/Why/How TFs of Initial Value Stat Breeding~*

The Who: Pokemon, every Pokemon has a set of six Initial stat points.

The What: Initial (or Individual) Values (IVs) help determine a Pokemon's stat totals, damage totals, taking hits ratio, and Hidden Power type and BP. (IV Guide on Serebii.net)

The Why: High IVs can be a determining factor in whether you kill in one hit or survive more than one hit, as well as who moves first during a turn. If you would like your Pokemon to use the move Hidden Power with the type of your preference, IV breeding helps with this too.

The How: Continue reading...

*~How TF to Get Good IVs~*

Step #1: Catch a lot of Pokemon
Yes, go out to where you can obtain your favorite Pokemon and catch a lot of them. Catching each Pokemon means they will have their own numbers randomly generated, and you'll have a lot of variety in Pokemon genetics to play with.

If you breed for a lot of Pokemon to start with instead, there will be less variety in their IVs as they will likely just share the same ones from the initial parents. In Diamond/Pearl, use of the PokeRadar can be useful if you are able to chain effectively. Take a Synchronize Pokemon with the Nature you'd like for the Pokemon you're gathering so you can get a head start on that breeding process too.

Step #2: Find their IVs.
Use this calculator: IV Calculator at Metalkid.info

You will need to have all the Pokemon you've caught at a high level, at least twenty but better at fifty or one hundred. You can do this either by Rare Candies or sticking them in the Daycare (don't accept the eggs from the old man yet), or by battling with somebody in set level 50 or set level 100 battle. These set battles can be done either through a Diamond/Pearl WiFi battle, or Free Battle in Battle Revolution.

Be sure to take note of your Pokemons' characteristic, as this will give you a for sure total on the stat that it applies to.

Step #3: *record scratch!*
The Math provided by Smogon

If you've read the above link first and think "That's a hell of a lot of work~!", good job; you know when to stop caring. However, it is good to point out that while the probabilities of getting flawless IV spreads is nigh impossible, you won't really need all IVs on your Pokemon to be perfect. Your Pikachu will still die to Earthquake, Quick Attack will still suck versus Magnezone, your Shedinja will always have 1 HP.

When most people train their Effort Value (EVs) points into only two or three stats anyways, having two or three fantastic IVs isn't a bad idea. Especially if those two or three IVs will help you get a good Hidden Power if you want that too.

Step #4: Let's get on~! ~owwww....~

Go through your mob of Pokemon and select out every one that has at least 30 or 31 IVs in one stat. Let's say we're working on a Magnemite, and you've come up with the following specimens:

Mantine #1: x/x/x/30/x/x (HP/Attack/Defense/Special Attack/Special Defense/Speed)

Mantine #2: x/x/x/x/31/x

Mantine #3: x/x/x/x/x/31

Awesome, Mantine likes lots of Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. HP could be nice too, but let's work with this for now. Now we could be working with Mantyke if you want, but in the interest in avoiding "babies can't breed" syndrome, we'll just ditch the Wave Incense for now.

Now take Mantine #1 and Mantine #2 to the Daycare and make a bunch of eggs. My personal habit is to bring a Magcargo and gather three to five eggs from Daycare Man at a time and hatch them all together. Check their IVs periodically, and eventually you'll come up with this:

Mantine #4: x/x/x/30/31/x

*Note: If Mantine #1 and #2 are the same gender, breed #1 with another Mantine of the opposite gender until you can come up with a new #1 of the opposite gender of #2.

The next step is to breed Mantine #4 with Mantine #3 in the same fashion, and continue doing so until you get this:

Mantine #5: x/x/x/30/31/31

Awesome~!

*~How TF to Get a Good Hidden Power~*

MetalKid's Calculator: link
Smogon's Guide:link

~*Understanding Smogon's Guide*~

Let's look at our Mantine again: x/x/x/30/31/31. According to Smogon's Hidden Power guide, this Mantine has chance for either Hidden Power Grass, Hidden Power Electric, or Hidden Power Water. HP Water is pretty silly on a Surf/Water Pulse/etc. learner, so what would it mean to have HP Electric or HP Grass? HP Electric could be useful against other waters or birds, such as Gyarados, Skarmory, other Mantines, and more. HP Grass would be good against Ground/Water types like Swampert or Quagsire.

[color=darkblue]Smogon on HP Grass
every approximately 16th baby will now have a chance to have hidden power GRASS with base power at least 65, if

A) HP IV is an even number, attack IV and defense IV are odd numbers
B) attack IV is an even number, HP IV and defense IV are odd numbers
C) defense IV is an even number, HP IV and attack IV are odd numbers
D) HP IV and attack IV are even numbers, defense IV is an odd number
E) HP IV and defense IV are even numbers, attack IV is an odd number

So if Mantine's full IVs are: 23/0/15/30/31/31 (using option B)
MetalKid's Calculator results in this: Grass, 68 BP

Woot~

[color=darkblue]Smogon
or max base power (70) hidden power GRASS, besides getting one of the options A)-E), you will need the exact IVs of HP, attack and defense to be one of these:
31/30, 27/26, 23/22, 19/18, 15/14, 11/10, 7/6, 3/2

[color=darkblue]Smogon on HP Electric
every approximately 16th baby will now have a chance to have hidden power ELECTRIC with base power at least 65, if

A) HP IV, attack IV and defense IV are all odd numbers

So if Mantine's full IVs are: 23/1/15/30/31/31
MetalKid's Calculator results in this: Electric, 68 BP

Woot~

[color=darkblue]Smogon
For max base power (70) hidden power ELECTRIC, you will need the exact IVs of HP, attack and defense to be one of these: 31, 27, 23, 19, 15, 11, 7, 3

*~Other Notes~*

~*How to Get a Specific Natured Synchronize Pokemon*~

Step 1) Own a copy of Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald.
Step 2) Make many Pokeblocks of different flavors.
Step 3) Enter the Safari Zone.
Step 4) Place Pokeblock into the feeder that the Nature you want likes to eat. (Ex: Bold Pokemon like Sour Pokeblocks.)
Step 5) Catch a hell of a lot of Natu, hope they have Synchronize.

This thread is open for discussion as this can be a very confusing concept. Please keep your additional questions clear and on-topic.

This not a topic about using the Daycare, EV training, moveset building, or otherwise. The only exception will be on advice on which Hidden Power to use, but try to keep logical about these decisions.

Frequently asked questions will either be placed here or in the post above as the thread develops. Since this is a subforum where traffic is slower, I will provide answers to PMs if you ask politely enough. domokun

It was mostly inspiration after working towards a particular Hidden Power type for one on my Double Battles team. During which time, I saw a lot of misinformation on IV breeding in particular (such as people thinking that EV training would affect IV breeding), so I thought it best to make this guide while the correct information is still fresh on my mind.

I have a question. So, If I ignore the IVs and focus on my pokemon's EVs would that yield a significantly weaker pokemon?

You need a "vocabulary section"

IV means what? initial values?
EV means what? Effort Values?
BP means what? Base power?
TF means what? I have no clue?

The vocabulary words are explained as they are written.

TF = "The ********", as in "How the ********?"

But I still don't understand the whole chart...

HP
Loves to eat. 0 5 10 15 20 25 30
Often dozes off. 1 6 11 16 21 26 31
Scatters things often. 2 7 12 17 22 27
Often scatters things. 3 8 13 18 23 28
Likes to relax. 4 9 14 19 24 29

I don't get it... what does all that mean?

Reading something like this seems to just suck the fun right out of pokemon. But that's just my personal opinion.
