Story/Plot
In the times of sailing ships, stories were told by superstitious sailors about the fearsome creatures of the deep, and the measures they took to protect themselves were sometimes extreme.
FACT: All their stories were true. The Kraken, the Lorelei, the Sea Serpent, the mermaids…all these exist. New facts have been brought to light that make humans more and more suspicious about the existence of these creatures, and the hunt has begun.
Are you a human, wanting to make contact with the creatures from the oceans or merely to trap them for your own profit?
Are you a sea creature, curious about the humans, trying to stay hidden from them or wanting nothing more to destroy them and reclaim the oceans for your own?
Are you, perhaps, some other ‘mythical’ creature, watching from the shadows and laughing at the sea creatures’ misfortune in getting caught?
The choice is yours.

Rules
1. No Godmoding.
2. No perfect characters. It’s really intimidating for all us poor mortals, so please keep them off that pedestal.
3. No cybering.
4. Swearing, romance and gore are all allowed, but please keep it within reasonable limits.
5. Don’t kill anyone without their permission. Kindly PM me (both victim and murderer) beforehand, so I know.
6. This is a semi-literate to literate roleplay. No chatspeak, please. It makes me want to gouge out my own eyeballs and eat them.
7. No half-breeds, please. Remember, the fact that these sea creatures exist is only just coming to light, and any other creatures are still very much in the shadows. And besides, the mechanics behind that are…kind of…unpleasant.
8. Please stay active! If you must quit, do something to get rid of your character. Don’t leave us with zombies!
9. Follow the Gaia TOS. This is just common sense.
10. I might add more rules, but I doubt it, because ten is such a nice round number.

History: Tianara was lost overboard in a storm as a very young child. Normally, she would have drowned, but instead she was found by a mermaid who was mourning the loss of her own child. Taking it as a sign, the mermaid took the human baby and raised her as her own. She grew from infant to child to woman, and now at sixteen, she’ll soon be leaving to return to the human world. Although she doesn’t feel ready, she too knows it’s time.

History: Daniel's father was one of the most ruthless pirates there ever was. He was called Red Sky, formerly for the fact that he killed many, but for his more recent endeavors, that being leaking his victim's blood into a bucket, and throwing into the sky, just to piss off the spiritual forces in this world that he felt were real. One day, Daniel's father's ship got caught in a nasty storm, and they were thrown way off course, near Fiji. It was quite unlucky, because he had a newborn son on board, and they were fooled into crashing by the sirens. Daniel's mother could not be under the spell, and so she swam, with her baby, up close to one of the sirens, where she begged them to take her child. They honored her wish, right before they killed her. Daniel was raised by these sirens, but his father's blood stood strong. Even as his body slowly conformed to the law of the sea into some strange, human like form, his father's strong spirit seemed to be training him some how, because as soon as he had turned 16 and the Siren who raised him felt he was old enough to be told his story, Daniel immediately pounced the murderer and pressed his thumbs to her throat, eventually killing her. After that, he escaped to the sea and swam away for a strangely long amount of time, most likely due to his transformation, and eventually found his way to an old dock town, where he was not met too kindly by the humans, but they still felt he had a right to live there since he really was human. Now, he joins any pirate ship that is setting sail to aid them on their plunder, and quite often kills them all and takes the spoils if there wasn't enough to share and satisfy him, giving him a not-so-affectionate nickname, and a steep bounty, that no one dares to claim.

Personality: Katalina is constantly solemn-faced, even looking a little sad, which is what earned her her nickname. She is very reserved, although not shy, and has seldom been seen to do so much as smile. She has a gentle hand with animals, and rarely ventures close to the surface. However, she is fascinated by humans, and one of the most surefire things that will lure her up from the depths is the sound of a foghorn or the gunning of a motorboat.
History: Katalina has had bad experiences with humans in the past, twice getting tangled in fishnets and several times getting her tail caught in fish hooks. As a result, she has grown more wary. Though she is young as mermaids go, her stony stare and solemn face make her look much more world-wise than she is. Her only redeeming virtue is her voice, and quite often she sings even when no one can hear her, simply to comfort herself. Katalina has never been close to anyone, and generally finds it simpler not to risk it.

He holds a slight grudge against the mermaid clan that took his aunt – not for her sake, since he knows she’s happy there, but for his own; he resents having the ultimatum of a union forced on him and Katalina. His hatred for humans stems both from the general cruelty that has come upon his world from them and from an incident in his past. If he remembers it, he certainly doesn’t speak of it.

History: Nezik doesn’t have much of a history. He’s a young merman, and aside from one memorable run-in with humans which could have gotten all the merfolk in trouble, he doesn’t know much about the world outside. Now living with his sister Katalina in Half Moon Cove, he’s gotten a bit older and wiser. He is learning the ways of merfolk outside his sheltered cavern. Between the two of them and their friends, they hope to prevent war.

History: Jinx was somewhat smothered through most of her life, being raised as the baby of Narcis’s family. Although she couldn’t care less about most of them, she loves her brother as far as she’s able to. It was for his sake that she agreed to try to learn to deal with other seafolk in the right ways, and his attitude towards humans is reflected in hers. She, personally, hasn’t had much contact with humans, and she’s rather interested to see what they’re like. The idea of a war also pleases her, in its way – things get interesting when blood is spilled.

Species: Kyton(literally "Demon of Chains"), a race of infernal beings who are covered in chains and ropes, which they can control perfectly.
Personality: Kx'trz'xth is, like most demons, cold and calculating, always looking to use a situation to his advantage. He moved to the mortal plane several hundred years ago and decided to stay here, telling his infernal masters that it was, quote, 'More interesting than Hell, plus they're more creative with the torments up here.' It is thanks in part to Kx'trz'xth that Hell has drawn up new Immortal Soul contracts, based on the warranty cards that come with desktop computers.
History: As stated above, Kx'trz'xth, or Kicks, has lived on this earth for several thousand years. He has spent most of his time in medieval castles or remote islands with ancient temples, where a body caught in a web of chains is just another part of the decor. Recently he has expanded, working his way into caves and in rare occasions even shipyards. At one point roughly ten or twenty years ago he found short-term employment with a man who wished to be known only as 'Addams.'
Appearance: An emaciated humanoid being at least eight feet tall in his natural form, Kicks can change his height and physical characteristics to fit any human image, though he cannot hide the chains that cover his body from head to foot, draping over his shoulders and pooling around his feet.

History: He grew up in the cold northern regions, home of his kind. Even though it was in an elemental village, he still grew alone as most fended for themselves except to defend the village. He headed south after reaching age of maturity. The age that most of his powers present themselves. He never got really social with anyone so he considered and still considers himself a lone wolf.

Established Facts About the Seafolk
These have been established over the course of the RP. Please make your characters follow these rules, or have good reasons why they don't!
~ The merfolk do not die of old age, but illness, war, or other such things can kill them.
~ Current creatures include a kraken - there is only one adult, but there are about twenty-three babies, twenty-two of which remain unnamed; mermaids, Sirens, undines, the Lorelei, kelpies, sea dragons, harpies, and griffins.
~ If your mermaid or merman has a human form, they must be over three hundred years old. The human form drains magic, which makes it very difficult to hold for more than a few hours.
~ Mermaids can interbreed with Sirens or humans, but they must be in human form to interbreed with humans.
~ Most merfolk live in clans, although there have been cases of loners. Clans have a patriarch or a matriarch, a future leader, and the leader after that is chosen from among the future leader's children. The leaders are chosen by character, not by gender or age. Merfolk do not tend to leave their clan on a whim; it's the equivalent of a human running away.
~ Sirens have a culture of polygamy, while mermaids choose one mate for life.
~ 'Merfolk' refers to mermaids and Sirens - 'seafolk' refers to all sea creatures.
~ 'Ocean children' are human children raised by merfolk. They were usually abandoned babies or children lost at sea. Magic tends to seep into them, making them able to breathe underwater as the merfolk do and do various other small things. Around the age of sixteen, the merfolk gradually begin to reintroduce their ocean children to land. By eighteen, they're expected to begin their lives on land, and are then considered 'graduated' ocean children.
~ There are two kinds of Sirens - ocean Sirens and avian Sirens. If you want to be an avian Siren, please specify in your profile, and include the proper picture.
~ All of the merfolk can speak English (or the native tongue of wherever they happen to live, e.g. mermaids who live in France or Russia should be able to speak French or Russian, but don't necessarily speak English). They also have a language of their own - the language of mermaids differs slightly from that of the Sirens.
~ Nearly all 'mythical' seafolk can communicate telepathically.
~ Kelpies were once more intelligent than they are now. They are strong and very difficult to kill, even for other seafolk. However, it's very simple to lead them astray and escape.
~ Undines tend to live for about 180 years. They're very shy, live in clans deep under the water, and mature at about thirty years of age.
~ There is a sort of magical creature called "Dark Ones" by the seafolk. It is basically a soulless mass of darkness that attempts to use the darker emotions (grief, guilt, horror, hate, etc.) against living beings in order to bring them under its spell. Once the being's mind has broken and the Dark One has taken up residence, it is impossible to get rid of the Dark One without killing the host. The only way to battle this creature back is by calling up a lot of positive emotion to force it back. See pages 201-204 for examples.
