I just witnessed something which seemed down right dispicable to me. I was on zOMG! and was going to help some kid finish a quest. I'm not that strong on there cause I don't play that long, but I figured I could help. The third party of the quest got the OMGWTF creature to appear and then fled, leaving us to die. He then proceeded to taunt and instigate the kids in the crew and of course they bought into it. His childish insults just kept egging the kids on. I on the other hand watched until I could not take it any longer. I jumped in and began to do a sociological evaluation of him which caused him to leave. When I checked his profile, he is a grown man (not a member of this guild).I knew he had to be older from the way he spoke, but I figured maybe high school.
My problem with this is that I don't aquire joy from insulting the young gaia players, well not unless they act like little hooligans and need a good talking to. This young girl was really hurt and upset. She was just some nice kid who trusted us to help her with a quest. Anyways, that's my rant. I feel better now.

I've heard of retirees who are old and bitter trolling newsgroups out of spite -there's rotten apples in every group. Still, it sucks what that guy did to that kid, it is despicable.

How old was this guy, just out of curiosity?

I don't know for sure. But from his page it looked like he had to be in his 20s. I'm thinking late 20s. But, it's hard to tell from some lame Youtube video where he's trying to be funny. (Keyword there is TRYING)

I find a lot of people here fall into the bad apple group...both young and old. But likewise, there are plenty of people who are wonderful and kind, like you and that girl and the people in this guild. I try to focus on the nice people and those that deserve attention and respect.

I'm sorry you had to experience this. sad I hope that guy learned a bit of a lesson. And bravo to you for sticking up for someone else.

Thanks. I'm glad to see I'm not the only adult on Gaia without some superiority complex.

My 15 yr old daughter went with me to AC Moore, as I ran out of the yarn Im using to make a baby blanket for a friend.

I left the scrap piece in the car so I went after it while Ariel looked in the Yarn section for me to find something close.

Well, she had to get past this woman, so of course, Ariel said "Excuse me"... The woman took one good look at my daughter (who was wearing a two-piece sleeveless top, nice pair of jeans, long gold necklace, long neck scarf and nice shoes).... she had the balls to mumble "Dress your age"..

Ariel out of impulse turned around and said "And just how old do you really THINK I am?"... The woman was caught off guard and said "20"..

My daughter gave her a sarcastic look and said "Lady, try 15!"... the woman turned 3 shades red and walked out of the store. She couldnt believe my daughter heard her rudeness under her breath.

Yes, there are elders out there who are down right rude and Im glad my daughter handled herself well, because there was absolutely nothing wrong with what she was wearing, and she used her manners to get by her so she wouldnt bump her in the process..

LOL!! Good for her! You've obviously raised a well adjusted and self reliant young lady. Well done.

That's so rude! I've had that happen to me, but the opposite reason. I was in a store waiting on line talking to a friend beside me and the woman behind us huffed loudly and said "I wish parents would teach their kids what rules are for."
I thought she was talking about someone else, so I just looked at her and smiled, and when I glanced over she loudly reminded me that the mall we were in didn't allow children under 16 without a parent and that kids these days think breaking the rules isn't a big deal until they get arrested and cry all the way to jail. I kindly informed her that I was well over that age, and she ended up switching lines. Hahaha.

WOW!! She must have been really embarassed!! The only time I'de say something like that is if there are kids causing a commotion and breaking things. That's when I feel like I can say something. I work in retail so i've seen some nasty little ones who's parents DO let them get away with everything. Then again I've seen those that are well behaved and are... dare I say it... POLITE!!!! I know it's hard to believe in this day and age. Anyways, who gives these hoity toity people the right to look down on everyone around them? Are they just that unhappy with themselves?

OH FREAKING HELL.. something just happened to me last night... It was 'date night' for my fiance and I.. He took us to see Twilight.. Damn near needed our money refunded thanks to this woman...

She was age 57, and yes, I knew it for sure... Heres how and here's some good s**t...

From about 10 minutes into the film for about a good 20 minutes.. this woman sitting at our table (www.chunkys.com) got a damn call on her cell phone in the beginning of the film.

Mind you, I had already had one margarita in me, and because they screwed up an order for our dinner, they gave me another margarita on the house (heheheh, yes, I was under the influence)..

She is just gabbing away.. and then I freaking HAD it. I turned around, look STRAIGHT in to her face and said loud enough "ARE YOU FREAKING DONE YET? SERIOUSLY, IM ABOUT TO GO INTO A DARK AND TWISTY PLACE WITH YOU!" I was feeling a Meredith Gray moment (Grey's Anatomy), when I yelled at her.. I looked at her again and said "GET OFF THE ******** PHONE OR IM HAVING THE POLICE OFFICER REMOVE YOU!"...

She tried to scold ME for disturbing her on the cell phone IN THE MIDDLE of the movie... well.. someone got the police officer who was just out in the hallway.. and escorted her out.

Would you believe.. ... heheh, that witch WAITED for me outside. Now, this was a 2 hour movie. I was still feeling really good with the tequila they put in my drink...

The minute I walked outside just past the door.. she started to scold me.. telling me off for bothering her on the call ... I looked at her (heheheh, Im cracking up still)... and said to her "Look woman, youre OBVIOUSLY older than me and OBVIOUSLY dont give two shits that everyone in that theatre paid the same admission ticket and paid the same for dinner. My daughter has MORE COMMON SENSE than YOU?! She tried to remind me that she is my elder and that I have to respect her...

hehehe, ok.. so I asked.. Well, how old ARE you? She replied "Im 57 and Im a respected physician here in Nashua. I have calls to take if a patient pages me."...

"Lady, youre obviously not taking patient calls otherwise I could NAIL YOU FOR VIOLATING HIPAA... But lets face it, I heard 'bra at Victoria Secrets for 20.00'... hmmmm what ******** patient is going to talk about bras on sale at Victoria Secrets, HMM?!?... Common sense says you shut your damn cell phone off when you go to a movie theatre, you put it on vibrate, and when it turns you on, you leave the room to take the call. END OF STORY. Its bad enough the 15 yr old that was sitting at our table had MORE MANNERS THAN YOU DID because even SHE was pissed off at you... "... I could hear teenagers in the background calling for the cop to come over... The cop saw the same woman and told her if she doesnt go to her car now, he was going to have her arrested for public disturbance and hell.. something else, but I cant remember... She shut her trap so fast and sprinted for her car.

OHHHHHH I hate that with a passion!

I tend to take the attitude where I give out what I get. So if some kid is going to be an a$$, that kid is going to find out just how well it can be done when you have some experience under your belt! twisted

What that guy did was inexcusable though, these kids trusted him to help out! What a prize!

It's been said in other threads, but it bears repeating here, maturity isn't always dependent on physical age. This guy is a prime example, he may be 20 something, but in reality, I'd say about 5.

I've seen it on Gaia, other forums, and IRL all the time: I think the mentality that it's OK to treat younger people like something sticking to the bottom of your shoe is disgusting.

One of my first encounters in early '04 here on Gaia was with a 22 year old that was flaming a 14 year old friend of mine. When I called her out on her lack of maturity and asked what kind of a person picks on a kid, she got rather rude with me as well. I apparently wasn't as fun though, since I didn't take the bait and flame her back. rolleyes

IRL, I have the problem of others thinking I'm younger and treating me poorly because of it. Gotta love being short and having a baby face. I get mistaken for being a senior in highschool (I graduated 8 years ago). When I was pregnant with my second, I kept getting dirty looks and heard a few comments about "children having children." My husband who is younger but looks older has gotten nasty looks like he's some kind of pervert. I'm older then him. EESH.

I personally think that in order to learn respect, others need it modeled to them. My 2 1/2 year old already has better manners then a lot of adults I know just because my husband and I make it a point to mind ours towards him. And damn if it isn't cute to hear a little baby say "please" and "thank you."

Hehe. I like that effect too, Dirge. I'm a babysitter sometimes to my friends kid, bit younger though. And he too is more well-behaved than most strangers at the city.

Someone always has to be better than others. More often it is 50-60 year old woman who sees her somehow more valuable to society than rest of us mortals. I too look younger than I am and I have frigging long red hair that doesn't help at all. (I have forgotten, haven't I? Despite my avi, I'm a woman) Hearing downplaying for that was common for years. Then I had to become nasty. Fake smiling helps. Half of the cases have to give up, for people around respond to situation by pretending that I'm the innocent one and have "rightful" and safe way to come defend me. People are cowards now days. After the risk is on someone else, then they do help...

WOW!!! Good for you!! I'm truly impressed, you handled yourself very eloquently... especially for having so much tequilia in you! 4laugh I've done something similar to a group that was talking. When I came back with the theatre sequrity I was litterally applauded by the entire theatre! LOL Of course they didn't wait outside for me. It was some big opening,... like Lord of The Rings or Spiderman... or something like that, so I think they knew they would have had a whole theatre audience to face. rofl

My boyfriend and I were just discussing the problems we have with the "generation Y." You know the Miley Cirus loving, Paris Hilton worshipping teanie boppers who have no opinions for themselves and would rather spend $800 of their parents money on a wallet than help someone in need. Now, I know there are a lot of them on here, but they're not all that bad, I'm just making a generalization. However, if we treat them like crap they will never learn. They will never grow. They will never learn to form their own opinions.
Quite often I've gotten into heated debates with people in forums. Usually politically related adn usually very young people. They are always shocked when I am actually nice with someone who I disagree with. They don't understand how I can so calmly complement someone on their eloquent rebuttlles and good points when it is obvious that I do not agree. I have opened many a young person's eyes to the fact that a well-informed opinion is worth more than quoting what they have been forcefed through the media and parents. I haven't changed many kids minds on things, but that is not my goal. My goal is to show them that they can make their own opinion about something and that is worth more than any wallet out there. Ok... I'm done now. dramallama
