Tolkein was once said to be able to go on for five pages about the details of a single tree, and neglect to mention that elves had pointy ears.
Tom Clancy is also really ******** guilty of this.
And the Dune guy, but I guess he got better. I couldn't get past the first chapter, the word Destiny was mentioned so many times it drove me insane.

Without Tolkien there is no D&D.
Like elves? Like dwarves? Before tolkien they were the same thing, which is to say pretty much Santa's workshop elves. He actually invented orcs, as well. Et cetera.
