Mmmmskay, so I've read the manga, I've watched the anime, and I've done some other third thing related to Ouran, and I still can't quite figure out the whole name-chan and name-senpai thing...... I know, it's a stupid American question that someone who's ever opened a manga, much less however many I have, should know....

Lol, I'm in America and I help run an anime club 4laugh
-senpai=upperclassmen -kohai=underclassmen -sensei=teacher -san=formal honorific, generally used to elders or those of higher status -chan=informal, friendly -nee=usually for a big sister figure -nii=usually for an older brother figure
there are more honorifics, but I am too tired to type them all sweatdrop

That was really helpful. I also help run an anime club too, but I'm not that familiar with the terms.

I'm not sure, but if Haruhi was actually acting like a girl, she would be referred as Haruhi-sama.

Sama is more along the lines of Lord. Dono is kinda like lady. It's an extreme honorific. Someone who is highly respected. Sorta...

Chanooa Wow, that's a lot.... It makes English sound so easy! Thank you though! Actually, English in a sense is just as difficult. Sir, Maam, My Lord, My Lady, Big Sister, Big Brother, Mr., Mrs., Miss.
Japanese honorifics are just like English honorifics. Grammatically, English is on of the most difficult languages on the planet. Also written Japanese still remains under Chinese and its 50,000 standard kanji.

Basically, some are forms of respect, and some are for friendship and family, as everyone else pointed out. Took me forever to get the hang of it as well.. xD
