So, I drew this recently. It was for a drawing challenge I took on (it's in one of my journal entries on deviantART--just click the picture to go to my page). I would LOVE any help and critiques you can offer, I also appreciate positive comments! On about anything. Pose, hair, clothing design, anatomy...

BTW, yes the broom is supposed to be there. It's his magical staff~

I know the clothing doens't have the best folds. And I know the circlet around his neck isn't perfect either. I know it's not the best. I would like some help so I can improve next time. ^^

You don't mind red lines do you? I find it easier by drawing out. XP

Not at all. It helps me understand what I should work on better too.

-Crits on Body and Hair-

I'm no expert on anatomy, but I think if you draw a mostly straight line down (not inwards) from his arm-pit, he looks more natural, or fleshed out.
As for hair, try to remember that there is still hair on the back of a persons head/neck.

-Tip-

Try looking at people who are standing naturally, jot a stick figure of how they're standing and try to flesh it out.
If you're looking at their hair, do a balloon shape and do a rough design with no real details of their hair.

-Positive Comments-

The folding, and the feet are very good (be careful how many toes you draw)
Hands are by far the most hardest thing to draw. So I applaud the hand holding the broom.

-Crit on Broom-

All objects have a shape, be it a square, or a circle, or rectangle. To make an object 3D, try to extrude the shape. Like, make it into a cube or something, try using a straight edge like a book, or a fork, etc. on the broom handle. (It's what I do when I have no ruler)

-Tips

Get a real broom, or a bunch of misfit objects, and see which way they face. In real life, 3D shapes are often distorted by which is closer, and which is further.
Sketch these out in different positions so you have a reference of them.
(Or you can just imagine a broom if you're too poor to afford one like me. :>)

-Positive Comments-

The details on the broom itself are very good and the dotted effect on top gives it a nice brush look.

-End Notes-

I hope I helped, I'll try help with hands, and arms next, but that's a very grey area for me.

Coming up next, Cheat-Sheets!

Thank you~

That helps a lot ^^
There was some sort of wind to go with his hair right there. I guess the faint outlines I drew didn't quite show up. I forgot about the rest of the hair. @_@

I... hadn't noticed I drew too many toes (although I know people with more than 5 toes per foot). I used a model for some things, like my brother's hands and feet and the broom (can't believe he agreed).

Thank you so much for taking the time to write up all! It helps a lot, especially on the new drawing I'm doing.

Love how serious he looks while holding the broom, and as chocolat said: the hands and feet look awesome :3

I have a tip on the hair. I'm guessing in the dark here, but it seems like you're doing a lot of short streats to do long (well, comperatively long) hair. My tip is that you don't lift the pen from the paper until you've followed the strand of hair all the way out (be light at hand)! That way it get's a more airy feel and looks less skribbled.

The hands, even in a manga picture, need to be the same size as the head. And ya know that circle around the end of the broom, erase half of it(the half closest to the head) it will look more realistic and believabel. Other than that it's pretty good!
P.S. The folds are reeeeeally good!

The_Witch_Aryllia:
I guess that would make sense with the hair. I'll try not to lift the pen (I do that to see how well I'm doing). Thank you.

I wanted to get that serious look right as well. I planned to design a real magical staff, but the idea changed. But, broom = magical staff. ^^

ssanimegirl:
I didn't know hands were that big (I'm measuring hands against heads right now), but I do have trouble sizing hands. I'll keep that in mind.
And thank you. ^^
I usually fail at folds.
