Ok I don't like red velvet. But my sons first Bday is coming up and its red themed. I plan on duplicating this cake I saw at Kroger that had the icing so it looked like a frog just in red. I want the cake itself to be red too. Any ideas or recipes?

All you have to do is add red food coloring to any light-colored cake mix/recipe.

Like slip a few drops in a strawberry mix and you get a wonderful color.

I like the sound of that though I wouldn't use mix, they tend to have dairy in them. Hubby wants add pomegranate cranberry juice to a cake recipe but I don't know how that would turn out. Though I prefer I more natural option that just dye

Dye's will give you the best colour. If you just want stiff red icing sugar mix egg-whites, icing sugar (confectioners sugar) and a few drops of red food colouring. That's what I use to make the red roses for my cakes.

But if you want a softer icing use margarine/butter, a little bit of milk (soy milk works too) and icing sugar(confectioners sugar) with a few drops of red food colouring.

If you want the entire cake to be red then I'll find you a recipe. Though your best option is food colouring to get that red look. Red berries and such often leave the cake pink and can make it mushy when added in.

Just pm me if you need to.

Maybe if you could look up cake mixes that use fruit juice that I can do substitution...I'm good at that. And thank you so much for the icing stuff I didn't even think about it but icing does have dairy in it. can you PM detailed instructions for both kinds of icing as I think I will need the softer one to cover the cake a the harder one to make the froggy decor

Well in a recipe you can just change the liquids out.

Ingredients
2 cups white sugar
1 (3 ounce) package strawberry flavored gelatin
1 cup butter, softened
4 eggs (room temperature)
2 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup whole milk, room temperature
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup strawberry puree made from frozen sweetened strawberries
Directions
1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans.
2.In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and dry strawberry gelatin until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the batter alternately with the milk. Blend in vanilla and strawberry puree. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
3.Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a small knife inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool in their pans over a wire rack for at least 10 minutes, before tapping out to cool completely

Like this one, where it says milk, just put the juice instead, but if you pommegranate or cranberry the cake will turn a darker shade of pink instead of red.

dark pink is better than baby pink. but there some liquids that can't be changed for others. I can substitute soy milk for the milk but not juice because they have different chemical properties.

Not always true, but for this perhaps mix it with the puree, or use pomegranate perserves and omit part of the sugar.

It's probably too late now, but you can also do a jello cake with a red colored jello, like strawberry. Once you have the cake cooled, stab in all over with a fork. Mix up jello and such, but instead of pouring into a pan you pour it into the cake and let it soak in. Chill for a couple of hours, then you can ice it and treat it just like a normal cake. It'll have a marbled look.
