I don't think 4.0 multiclassing (for PCs) is actually difficult at all, once you 1.) Know how to do it, and 2.) How to do it right.
The difference between the two is, 3.5 multiclassing allowed you to pull off some really neat tricks, and/or quick prereqs for prestige classes. 4.0 multiclassing allowed you to multitask your battlefield role, especially to fill the void of any lacking combat roles.
Of course, a universal use for multiclassing for either edition, is to round out your character, and rather than overspecialize him/her, you give your character more leeway to do other things, from your 3.5 rogue/wizard with awesome stealth AND invisibility, to your 4.0 fighter being able to heal on short notice :3

SporkMaster5000 Disciple of Sakura The complete lack of logical multiclassing is one of the laundry list of reasons I don't play 4.0. with a given definition of "logical" can I ask what exactly you're trying to do with this NPC that you need codified rules for multi/dual-classing? BASICALLY what i want to do is make a guide character for a zOMG-styled 4e campaign

Wolfram Asher Davidson SporkMaster5000 Disciple of Sakura The complete lack of logical multiclassing is one of the laundry list of reasons I don't play 4.0. with a given definition of "logical" can I ask what exactly you're trying to do with this NPC that you need codified rules for multi/dual-classing? BASICALLY what i want to do is make a guide character for a zOMG-styled 4e campaign so why do you need multiclassing? what's wrong with just using the rules for making a custom monster and/or making a monster an NPC? talking about multiclassing and hybrid really sounds like you're trying to make a PC, which is more work than you really have to put into an NPC.
