[BACKGROUND]

Quote:

“Mother… won’t you get up already?” Kanani urged, annoyed at the apparent laziness of her still sleeping mother. It was already mid-morning, with the sun high and nigh in the eastern sky. The warmth of the golden orb blanketed Kanani’s lean back as shining rays filtered through the thinning tree line to cover the soft grass of the forest clearing. The crickets still chirped, somewhere hidden under the dew-covered stalks, while cooing birds sat watching in the nearby limbs, hoping that soon, a plump worm would emerge from the rich soil.

Amid all this mid-morning murmur, in the middle of the small, wildflower-filled meadow, lay the dark-furred mare, her sides slowly rising in lazed slumber. Her foal danced at her side, as most adventurous youngsters would, trying to get the sleepy mother to awaken fully and start the day, though, unknown to the little filly, the day was still premature.

“One moment, Kanani…” the mare murmured, turning her head to the side and digging deeper into the grassy pillow beneath it. She sighed, much to the displeasure of her foal.

“But mother! It’s already sun-up! Don’t you want to get up and play? Or explore? Or go and find daddy? Besides, mother, I’m hungry! Aren’t you?” the little filly exclaimed, dancing around on her graceful deer-like legs. She leapt completely over her mother’s body, landing on the other side and stooping to nudge her mother’s face with her velvety muzzle. “Come on, mother! Plleeeeaaaasssseeee!” The little voice whined, stretching the word to an unbearable length.

The mare sighed, once again rolling to the side, and then her bright green eyes opened to see the filly’s face, and her shining aqua eyes, once again right in front of hers.

“Very well, my flower. I’m up, I’m up,” she laughed as her daughter pawed at her with a tiny hoof. The filly giggled as her mother gathered her legs beneath and pushed up, rising slowly from the ground like a vine that reaches for the warmth of the sun.

“Yay!” The little danced and pranced, skipping a circle around her still-drowsy mother, and waving her black-furred tail like a banner. “What shall we do now, mother? Play? Explore? Or… play?!” A silly grin graced the small face.

The mare laughed at her wily daughter, shaking her dark mane out of her long-lashed eyes. “Anything you want, dear. So long as you do find time to eat somewhere in there! You ARE hungry, remember?” An eyebrow cocked, a knowing grin appeared.

Kanani grimaced, slowing her excited movements. “Weelllll… I guess I am… But do I have to eat now?” She turned to her mother, giving her a pleading look. The mare chuckled, shaking her head in false despair.

“Alright, Kanani. ONE game. Then we must go and eat, else your poor mother will dissolve into the wind for lack of sustenance!” the mare exclaimed playfully, chasing her daughter in circles as the filly laughed in joy.

“Alright, mama! One game it is!” And so they played.

That was the day that it all began, the day that my life changed. I can barely remember, for it seems so long ago, but I do remember a sudden stop to our playfulness. My father, who usually stayed in the nearby woods to guard us, and only came to visit in the evenings, came to us that day. My mother seemed worried right from the start, and though I did not understand his urgent mood, I also could tell that not all was as it should be. He moved us from our home that day, and if there’s one vivd thing I can remember, it’s my confusion. Why did we have to leave our perfect meadow? The place where I had been born, had been raised, had known and loved and cherished? To me, at such a young age, there was nothing that could have been bad enough to make us move, and never settle again. I did not understand that there was bad in the world--life was supposed to be an adventure, full of play and exploration. But not fear… and not so suddenly.
From that day on, we never found another single place to live. For almost a year, we spent a week here, a couple weeks there, but we always seemed to be heading in a general direction, as if we were going someplace important. But then we began to meet up with other groups of Cerynei, which, in a land that was a perpetual never-ending forest, was not common at all. I heard murmurs of rumors, about something terrible, always whispered in a fearful voice and a shaking tone, though my mother did her best to keep me away from whatever the fuss was. I met other young Cerynei, all of whom were sheltered like me. We would from a little group at night time, telling stories and sharing thoughts, though in truth, we still didn’t know what was happening. We were kept away from the worry, though as the days progressed, and the adults became more fearful, I began to realize one truth: we were not heading towards something, but instead, we were running away. And every day, we ran faster.

When I was almost two years old, and considered a young lady, our group had grown to more than three dozen Cerynei of all shapes, sizes, and ages. We still headed in the same direction, away from that place I had once called home. The rumors were full-blown now, and no longer fearful myths. We were all weary with fatigue and fear, and sadness that came from deep within us at the abandonment of our homes. My father became a sort of leader of the rag-tag group, and along with two other stallions, lead us away from that terrible thing that destroyed our lives. That terrible thing, which had been hidden from me for so long, was now apparent. My father had finally told me the cause of our exodus, figuring that I was old enough to be able to handle it. However, even though his explanation helped me to understand, I thought that I had already known the truth. Anyone could see what was happening, or rather, observe it. The air had grown warm and acrid, even beneath the cool leaves of our forested land. The sky above had taken on a red tint in the west, looking like something Hellish, something that I had only dreamed of in nightmares. In fact, a lot of us thought that we were living in a bad dream, just waiting to wake up in our clearings to the songs of crickets and mourning doves… but the truth was evident, and it was real.

Fires. Everywhere. And always burning, always consuming. Always destroying everything we knew and loved.

It was a morning like any other. The young mare awoke at the first morning light, opening her bright blue eyes to see her mother laying next to her, still fast asleep. Her sides rose peacefully, her breath tickled the leaves beneath her body. Her fuzzy ears twitched, as if she were dreaming peacefully, though in truth, Kanani knew that no one dreamed peacefully anymore. Dreams were a thing of the past, a pleasure no longer experienced. All there was was reality, cold, hard reality.

Kanani sighed, turning her head and nuzzling it back into the dry leaves that coated the forest floor. All around her was the soft murmur of other sleeping Cerynei, most of whom slept far past sun-up, something that Kanani could never do. She missed her younger days, when it was just her and her mother, and rarely, her father. The solitude that they experienced was normal for Cerynei, and the only thing that she was comfortable with. However, ever since they had been in a group, Kanani had drawn deep within herself, trying to remember those memories that had been so dear to her. It seemed that now, even though she was closer to him than she had ever been, she saw her father less than she ever had. Even though she was used to his absence, she found that she missed his strength., and the love that they would share in those brief visits that he made every evening in their meadow. When he appeared, they would always know that everything was alright, and that the world was as it should be. But now, there were no more visits, no more heartfelt greetings. Only appearances here and there, just to say “I love you,” or, “It’ll be okay.” And then he would disappear again, scouting out the path that they would travel that day.

“Oh father… will we ever be happy again?” Kanani whispered to herself, staring at the trees in front of her. Their honey-colored bark seemed to glow in the pale morning light, their leaves twitched and whispered in the quiet breeze. Almost peaceful, were they. Almost…

A sharp noise came from within the trees. Startled from her drowsiness, Kanani’s head shot up, and her eyes focused on the brush within, which shivered as if from cold. Her muscles tensed, ready to spring from danger, when from that bush emerged a small rabbit, who, after pausing to examine the clearing full of deer-like horses, darted away in it’s destined direction. Kanani sighed and allowed herself a small smile. ‘How silly of me,’ she thought, and let her body relax.

However, right after the first rabbit disappeared from sight, another emerged from the same bush, heading in the same direction: west. Then another, and then a squirrel, chattering in some defense, leapt from branch to branch above. And then a quail, and then another rabbit. And then, as suddenly as lightening strikes from above, a deer leapt from the trees, startled by the group of horses, but not enough to halt its progress. It leapt right over the sleeping forms and disappeared into the trees on the other side, a trail of disturbed leaves and kicked-up dust littered behind it. More and more animals appeared then, in groups and families, running across the clearing and disappearing on the other side. The upsetting noise rose to a dull roar, a hectic chattering of creatures that seemed to be running from something… Kanani’s heart felt weak as she watched them, for she knew that something was wrong.

Many of the Cerynei were woken up now, including Kanani’s mother. They stared in horrified unison at the fleeing animals, and many rose from the ground, searching for the source of the problem. Kanani helped her mother up, staying close to the older mare, when a familiar smell hit her nose.

“Smoke!” she exclaimed in a fearful whisper, her head whipping around to gaze into the trees on the east side of the clearing. The whole company seemed to freeze as one as the smell became evident to all, and they all stared in fearful anticipation. The flow of animals increased, and among their chatter, there came another noise. A deep roar, almost like thunder, concealing smaller cracks and groans, coming from within the woods in the east. An orange glow, growing deeper… a thick wind laden with black smoke and ash.

And then Kanani’s father leapt from the trees, his valiant features unable to hide his own fear. “Run, all of you! RUN!!!” he shouted in his deep voice, stamping his hooves to the ground. The Cerynei group lurched forward as one, turning themselves towards the west and leaping into the woods, running away, away. AWAY. Away from everything, from hope, from love, from happiness, from life as they knew it. Away…

Kanani’s mother stood still, though, waiting for her father. Kanani nudged her sternly, turning them towards the west. “Mother, we must go!”

“No, Kanani! Your father--!” her voice was cut short as a sudden explosion came from the east side of the clearing, a billowing wall of fire that seemed to implode upon the dry leaves. Both mares were startled, and confused by the sudden burst of light. Kanani’s mother’s terrified voice rang out as she shouted, “Rowan! Rowan!” She ran towards the blaze, searching for her mate.

“No, mother! Father!” Kanani yelled, following in her mother’s panicked hoof steps. Everything was burning, everything was consumed by that roar that came from that gluttonous monster. Her vision was blurred as ashes clouded her eyes, and her lungs burned from the smoke.

“MOTHER! FATHER!” she screamed, desperate. She gasped as a body brushed against her, and for a hopeful second, thought that it was one of her parents. But it was a different face altogether, a princely-looking Cerynei with brave features and stern eyes. He urged her away from the fire, away from the roar, and though she protested, she could not resist him.

“No! I cannot leave! Please, my parents--”

“We must go!” was all he said, and with one last push, they were both running westward, away from the flames, and away from everything else that had ever mattered.

That was the last time I ever saw my parents. I’m not sure what happened to them, but I only hope that they escaped the flames and are somewhere safe, as am I. Perhaps I will see them again someday, perhaps not. But as long as there’s hope, I believe that I will be able to go on. There’s still a world out there, even if it’s not the world I’m used to. But it’s there, and it’s waiting. And I CAN go on. I know it.

I followed the Cerynei prince from our old lands to the lands of our ancestors, trusting in him fully to lead us to a new life. He saved me once, and I know he’ll do it again. And, hopefully with this new life, will come my new destiny. Whatever it may be, I’m ready for it. I’m ready… for anything.

Kanani is one of the original Cerynei to flee from the old Cerynei lands to the Kawani Forest, following the Cerynei Prince, Kozue. She was very young when she first began her journey, not even a year old, and arrived in the lands of her Soquili cousins soon after. She lost her parents in an unfortunate incident, but never dwelled on the loss, and simply strived to make a new life in a new land. Her heart was set on living in her brave father's footsteps, and never looking back to what could ever be again, a home. So she summoned her courage and broke from the temporary Cerynei herd that Kozue had formed, intent on blazing her own trail. But she never imagined how different the new lands were from the old.

Kanani came into contact with many friends and foes along her journey, but never seemed to falter. Despite her fear of not being able to find those who would accept her, she continued to search, and was eventually rewarded. She made a few friends worth keeping, and shared many stories with strangers. And, of course, she fell in love.

Kanani was unsure of her feelings for the golden flutter stallion, Crisanto, at first. She knew that the Cerynei always prided themselves on their bloodline, and even that Prince Kozue was partial towards a full Cerynei blooded mate. But Crisanto was the first stallion to show her true kindness, and with him, she felt like she could finally be herself. He seemed to understand her, even though he had never been through such a predicament as having one's home destroyed. She soon fell in love with him, and as soon as they lifemated, all thoughts of her old home disappeared, along with the worries of cerynei tradition. Well, so she thought.

It was a few years before Kanani and Crisanto finally had babies, but the new additions were sure blessings to the family! They were both blessed with not only two, but three baskets! Kanani had never been so happy in her entire life, and never so willing to settle down in one place to raise the children. But then the baskets opened, and three beautiful faces met the eyes of the parents. Two sons--Aonani and Kahlil, and one daughter who looked amazingly like her mother, Kamakana. Kanani could not have asked for more beautiful foals.

But Kamakana's bright eyes and sure-footed attitude began to remind Kanani of her old self, a self that she barely remembered. It brought back visions of a vast land of forests, stretching as far as the eye could see, with crystal clear streams and gently sloping hills. She remembered her old home, the small meadow with the feathery grass and tickling wildflowers. And she remembered how carefree she had been, and how deep inside, she missed it.

So one night, she told her daughter of this land, and asked Kama if she'd like to take a journey to see what remained. Kama, wanting nothing more than to be like her mother, agreed.

And the journey begins.

She's a lover of stories and spirited souls, and loves nothing better than to spend an evening exploring a new part of the forest or sharing tales with friends. Despite her young appearance, Kanani has experienced enough troubles to have wizened considerably. [PLOTS and LOOKING FORS]

As of right now, I'm still not sure if Crisanto, Kahlil, and Aonani are going to make the trip along with Kanani and Kamakana. It's really supposed to be a mother/daughter bonding/discovery trip, so it'll probably stick to just the two. But, just to make things clear, Kanani IS lifemated, and will not be searching for love. However, Kamakana's plots will eventually lead her to love, but that'll be a long way off. For now, I'll still be settling out all the details.

Don't be afraid to suggest your own plots! Like I said, this is just a skeleton of what I need to work out.

FRIENDS

This is the plain old friends routine. Meet and greats are welcome, though I'm still slow on RP, and would rather plot first then RP, lightly, after the initial meeting has been set out. Of course, this is more for Kanani. Kamakana is more open to RP since she has not yet experienced the outside world. Most of the friends made on this journey will simply be short acquaintances, for the pair can not stay in one spot too long.

OTHER CERYNEI

Kanani and Kamakana are open to other Cerynei, perhaps even those from the original herd, who are also wanting to discover what happened to their original homeland. Now, be warned, this is no journey for the feint hearted. The Cerynei lands were ravished by fire, and it is likely that when the group reaches them, they will only find a dead, blackened landscape. I'll only let a few join the group, if need be. This is only a traveling party, and will not end up as a herd.

HARDSHIPS

Yes, I'll also be needing some less nobler types of Soquili to block the way every now and then, and even produce a fight. Kanani is not the best fighter, but she's courageous enough to hold her ground and protect her daughter. These experiences will help to harden Kamakana into a wise young adult.

User ImageCan be Rped as a Foal

I can offer Zheadeos. He is rather a quiet Stallion though he does talk enough to make conversation, but he not exactly a smooth talker so to speak cause at times a question can turn into a demand because of the misplacement of words. Over all he is quiet good with light conversation on his part. He's a great listener and loves to help out with problems. He tends to think before he acts but he doesn't put much though before speaking.

As a foal he's a mixture of curiosity and cautiousness but for the most part the same as he is as a young adult.
PostPosted: Sat Jul 10, 2010 1:35 am

8D Let's see here... I find this plot quite cute and totally dig the mother/daughter journey so I figured I'd offer up some folks. You can pick and choose what you like from them depending on what fits in best! x3

User Image
Name: Daveyn
Species: "Raptor"
Personality:
Daevyn can be described as a "wild animal" in many respects. He has the quick wit, intelligence and ferocity of a predator but there's a twist to this little story - he has no interest in eating meat. Instead, these qualities translate in to the stallion being exceptionally territorial over a location he prefers to call 'home'. He's generally harmless unless provoked, but anyone stepping into his territory will discover they are most unwelcome and will be chased out by force if necessary.

He has no concept of "male" or "female", assuming that both look and act the same - as a consequence he will even attack a mare or child, chilvary is not a word he understands. This is due to his upbringing, an upbringing which he doesn't realise utterly destroyed much of his childhood and gave him a warped perspective on life. He doesn't discuss his past, nor does he seem to think it was necessarily a bad one, he's more indifferent to it than any thing else.

Nevertheless, best him in some way either through combat or trickery and you will generally find he steps to the side. Think of him as a sphinx, he guards a land with both riddles and force. He grants the trespasser a chance to solve his puzzle first, before exacting his wrath on those who fail it.
Suggested Scenario:
An obstacle! You said you wanted a couple of these and he can be both puzzling and vicious depending on how his challenges are met. If it comes down to combat etc any injuries can definitely be discussed amongst you and your fellow adventurers!

User Image
Name: Kozue
Species: Cerynei Prince
Personality:
Former Prince to the Cerynei, Kozue has settled into a quiet life deep within the most dense regions of the forest. Content that his kind have settled well and dispersed into the depths of the Kawani Province, he makes no move to reunite them under one banner. In essence he has 'retired' from his immediate duties and merely casts a shadow and watchful eye over his kind in the event that his services might be called upon in the distant future.

That being said, despite his decision to retreat from the public eye he still maintains his steadfast manner and noble spirit. Ever there to greet those who seek him out, he is both intelligent and considerate to their plight. Not terribly expressive, he is often regarded as an enigma - his condition both mentally and physically are not generally regarded as his immediate concern.

Nevertheless, over the past few years in solitude the male has adopted a number of hobbies. Most of these hobbies have been introduced to him through natives to the Kawani Province and due to their bizarre nature he appears to be taking on the role of an eccentric, a title that amuses him to a great degree.

Suggested Scenario:
You suggested that Kozue encounter Kanani at some point, just shuffling him into your plot thread so he's here as a reminded though he can feature as more of a cameo if you need him. x3

User Image

Name: Shizukii
Species: War Priest
Personality:
Shizukii is often mistaken for an exhuberant and enthusiastic mare. Bubbly and chatty, she is considered a social butterfly despite the rather experienced glow of her gaze. However, this bubbly experience hides a much more vulnerable individual. In essence she has built up 'walls' to protect herself from harm, following the death of her entire regiment. She has yet to fully recover from this loss and it is highly unlikely that she ever will, but on the warfield that held that bodies she did swear to live on and embrace what they had fought so hard to protect.

...Freedom.

As a consequence this now mature mare has travelled the globe, spending months (if not years) at a time in other regions examining, exploring and assessing other cultures and traditions. The Kawani Province has been her next stop and she has thrown herself wholeheartedly into her studies of the land.

She has a tendency to 'follow her feet' (literally) and will always let her hooves lead the way unless she is being guided directly by another individual. As a consequence she has a habit of turning up at the most unusual times and in the most bizarre of places.

Never one to panic, she tends to take everything in her stride and to be frank, nothing seems to surprise or horrify her anymore - in her books she's already seen enough to shock and horrify her for a lifetime.

Suggested Scenario:
Night light? Lol, she'd make an ideal guide in darker regions given that she glows. However she's also accustomed to war torn regions and absolute destruction so she would act as a rock to any Cerynei that might be shell shocked when they got back to their old home.

@SJG: Thank you for the offer! I think I'd rather have RP with Zhaed as a foal more than an adult, for that would give Kama reason to wander off from her mother and have a little fun. :3
However, I'm going to wait to start this RP since I'm leaving today!

@Epee: Oh my goodness, I absolutely love the part that Shizukii could play. Kanani would highly appreciate a guide in darker regions, especially since she has a foal with her who tends to run off and explore without informing her mother. Having a guide would take a great deal of stress off Kana's shoulders.
I also like your raptor boy, and think that he'd give Kana a good challenge without producing as much damage as a skinwalker or Kalona might. I think this would be good for a slight injury, perhaps a sprained ankle or a few small wounds.
However, as I mentioned to SJG, I'm leaving on a small trip today, so I'll have to wait till I get back to discuss further. Sorry, but thank you so much!

*Grins* Enjoy your trip and give me a shout whenever you get back. I'm happy to wait around a bit!

As a Foal
|3 I couldn't resist.

I thought I'd offer up Windy 83 She's actually Zhea's little sister~
Just saying that though, Windy is basically the exact opposite of Zhea |3 She's spunky, chattery, can be immature, rash, clueless and reckless. She gets alittle more mature as an adult, and less hyperactive, but she's still the same as she was as a foal -- curious and always on the move. She's been lately trying to discover herself as a young adult. I would think she'd make a good friend for Kama as a foal, and encourage her adventurous personality, since Windy is also very adventurous. She doesn't know many fillies either, so it'd be great for her to have a female friend to talk to |3 'Specially when she gets older.
PostPosted: Sun Jul 11, 2010 8:26 pm

Thanks Shiro! I'd love for Kama to meet Windy, perhaps as a foal, then again when she is older? Of course, she'll eventually have to face the fact that she is more flutter than Cerynei, but I think it'd be beneficial for her to have a few Cerynei friends that she can be influenced by other than her momma.

I'll get back to you on an RP once my internet time is more stable! <3

Once Papillon and Hema's basket pops, maybe Papi and his foal could run into Kana and Kama?
The parents could chat and the foals could have a little adventure (with their parents keeping a close eye on them, of course)

"I Lost His Name!" is actually Adelis.

[Poor Natsu lost his information, and I need to get around to...remedying that.]

Adelis has quite the personality. Like his pelt, he is vibrant. It is rare that his temper can be roused, though once it has, he takes after his father: explosive, smoldering, and even somewhat dangerous--though he would never directly harm a living being unless he was threatened by them.

To be frank, it would appear that he hasn't a care in the world, or has never experienced hardship. In ways, that's true. He has been fortunate enough to not have had any dangerous or damaging encounters, though I suspect even if he had, he would still be the same, spunky Adelis. To have to be around while another experienced a hardship would shock him, but he would do his best to either lighten the situation, or help those in need. Despite that, he can be a bit of a stubborn mule, courtesy of his mom. She hasn't let anything stop her from fulfilling portions of her dream, and likewise, neither will he.

Cerynei are not a new breed to him. One of his most cherished friends is actually an aunt to both Little Wind and Zheadeos: Sheba.

[I'm a sucker for cute pictures, I couldn't resist. |D]

Open to anything, with him, even farther along the line, down the road. I have a few RPs I'm testing out with others...mostly via AIM, but as I'd mentioned in your contest thread the other day, been looking to worm my way into the community. He's not tied to anything, and though I realize you prefer to have Cerynei on the journey home, Adelis would be more than happy and willing to accommodate them as long as you and they wish.

Aria comes from a musical line, but she could barely carry a tune in a bucket, just like her father. That little piece doesn't bother her, though she wishes she could do her mother proud, in that regards.

Personality wise, she fancies herself to be like water: able to shift and adapt in new situations, while keeping her head. She hasn't exactly explored the violent side of water, and the tempests that happen, and hopes she never will; in that regards, she tends to be quite naive.

She would be a steady friend and companion for both Kanani and Kamakana, even if only for a brief time. There's potential to meet, randomly, afterwards as well. She's not bound to anything aside from her family, and though she loves them dearly, she does like time to herself.

Both Aria and Adelis can be RP'd as foals, too, if you'd prefer.

@Cy: Of course! That sounds like it could be pretty fun. I'll get back to you once I set up an RP. :3

@Arashi: Thank you! I'm absolutely ecstatic about how they turned out.

I'd love for Kama to meet Adelis, either with both being foals or both being adults, or both ages. His personality sounds much like hers, in the fact that she is vibrant with her feelings, and lets nothing hold her back, and yet can be helpful and caring when needed. I bet they'd be great friends, and we can always RP/plot further later on, if we so wish.

It also sounds as if Aria would be a great friend for Kanani, especially in her emotional journey. I'd also be willing to RP them, but I'd focus more on Kanani then Kamakana.
