Shion fluttered with excitement as she spotted a distant figure approaching the gates; surely this had to be her escort home. Whoever this person was didn't look like Shiro, but Shion honestly didn't expect the high and mighty Kage to descend from him golden throne to deal with the riffraff. Shion began to approach the figure, but as she drew closer and slowed her gait, the figure's remained constant until they had walked right past her. Either they hadn't noticed or didn't care who she was, either way it meant this wasn't her ticket out of this dump. Still, a cloaked figure stalking the dead of night offered way more excitement than sitting around at the front door and she technically wouldn't be leaving the temple if she followed, so follow she did.
Shion stalked her quarry, muffling her footsteps and masking her presence as best she could, all the way to their destination. She watched quietly as the figure produced a scroll and went to work performing whatever technique this was. Who were they and, more importantly, why did they have an interest in sealing a part of a stream? Maybe the water around here had some sort of special properties. Who knew. All she could do to figure out was keep watch, so keep watch she did.

Toso's wordplay beating around the bush instead of providing a direct answer would definitely convey that he apparently knew something, or rather knew something more than Shion did. If not for the mans ever present poker face you could probably use body language to determine he was lying or being irritatingly sarcastic. Suffice to say Toso knew nothing and was given no orders of which to inform Shion but it sure sounded as though he did and was specifically restraining that knowledge and permission from her grasp. Toso wouldn't need to see her face to get a quick read on Shion's reaction to his banter. True to form, Shion let it be painfully obvious how irritated she was growing at Toso's inexplicable ability to say so much, but say nothing at all at the same time. Shion began to lighten up when Toso talked about cutting loose, but this relief was extremely short lived. The moment Toso brought up the man she killed back on the island. Her demeanor, instantly tightened up as she went rigid, trying not to think about it. Shion would try her best to play it off by turning her head away and giving a nonchalant shrug, passing off Toso's welcoming invitation to relax a little. "I don't know... he was the enemy... it's what we do, right? He tried to kill our comrades, so we had to kill him..." It would be painfully obvious this was a farce. Her voice was quaky and her hands had taken on a slight shake. Shion had tried to not think about what she'd done. While her words were true, the thought still bothered her. Yes, he was the enemy. Yes, he would have killed her, Toso, Xion, and many more. But it's not like he wasn't a person, you know? A person with a life, a family, a history... all of that snuffed out by one simple flick of Shion's fingers. What really hammered these feelings home was the Kage's response to it all. Everyone was calling what she did a mistake, punishing her for saving her comrades and, by association, killing the UHV soldier. It gave her sense that all of this could have been avoided. A life didn't need to be a taken, a mother didn't need to lose her son, a story didn't need to end. As she grappled with these thoughts, All she could bring herself to do was to tack on a short addition to her previous statement. "I had to save you... it was my job," her voice was weak and shakier than before. Clearly this was getting to her more than Toso had probably intended.

I wonder bloop," Perhaps it was his own lack of being able to express himself normally that made it easier to detect when someone else was expressing themselves un-naturally. Toso remained seated but his arm began to stretch out snaking around behind Shion and placing it on her shoulder with a light noodly pat. It was hard to tell whether Toso was being humorous in his words or not as he always said them in his monotonous voice. But the statement of Shion possibly having a crush on him came out more accentuated than the rest. Along with his opinion on the matter of how he'd feel if that were the case. Shion tried her best to keep the angsty charade up, but the combination of the squid's wriggly arms and light-hearted joking manner was more than enough to break it down. It was nice to have someone not shouting her down for once. Between the high stress of the mission, the subsequent scolding from the kage, and being forced to labor for two weeks with nothing to do but brew in her thoughts on what just happened, a good laugh was exactly what she needed. As Toso patted her shoulder and motioned Shion over, she let out a soft laugh and muttered as she walked over to him, "Shut up, I do not," clearly in reference to his joke about her crushing on him.
Shion took a seat on the bench and glanced over to the man beside her. "You really think talking about it will help? Okay then..." She trailed off for a moment and looked out at the temple grounds for a moment, giving the briefest of moments to collect her thoughts before she spoke... a very un-Shion thing to do. Maybe her time at the temple was actually starting to show some effect. "This whole thing just seems wrong, you know? We grow up on stories of the legendary shinobi warriors... brave souls who go out and save others, risking their own lives in the process... and here I am, being punished for saving lives. I know we're supposed to follow orders, but his orders were basically to abandon you. You know, I overheard him in the office before. He called you a close friend. What kind of a person is just willing to throw away a friend for the sake of orders. It's like he just sees us as tools... one use and thrown to the side when we dont serve that use." The quake in her voice had returned at this point, but she wasn't trying to hide it anymore. Her face clearly expressed just how upset she was by this thought. "Is that all we are to him? If he was willing to just let you die, his friend, what's he feel about me? About the others? The people he barely knows or doesn't even like..."

It still came out flat but the attempt was there. It seemed Shion's troubles were indeed more than just a simple girls infatuation with her super cool and devilishly hot squid senpai. In truth Toso had to think for a bit as a star streaked across the sky reflecting off his glasses.
"Well, bloop what if I were to tell you I was completely fine being abandoned Bloop?" Toso turned giving Shion another one of his smiles that while attempting to seem genuine would only come off as lacking any definite context, you might as well have painted a happy face on a rock. He then turned back to the sky. "You see the stars? There are many of them, each one doesn't necessarily have a purpose...but some. Some make heat like the sun, others form together to make the constellations, others are just balls of gas that take up space bloop. But, each one beautiful in their own right. When most people look at the stars, they don't think about what its made of or what it does. But when you put all of them together they make our galaxy. Now, lets say you're the mighty star squid. The squid in charge of deciding what stars...are...ah, I suppose I'll get to the point bloop."
Toso would say catching himself in his artistic philosophical ramblings. Likely Shion wouldn't be interested in such metaphors. His eyes went from looking up to looking ahead of him watching the stream flow. "Let's say you're the Kage. You're given a choice. Save the life of one friend, or keep the rest of your friends alive. Shiro, while I appreciate what he did...it was incredibly foolish bloop. Ah, perhaps I'm being to harsh mayhaps even selfish bloop."
He'd then look at Shion. "Shion, Shion Moro I believe that was your name bloop, ah ha. I hope you don't take offense to me trying to recall, we've never quite actually gotten the chance to actually speak to one another fully outside of assignments." He'd then look back at the stream almost soulless like a dead man walking. "The whole affair on Endaishima wasn't a problem Kumogakure should have even been involved in. If I'd have had my way. Bloop. Well, you'd have never been put in danger. I'd likely be dead, and Endaishima would have died with me. Suffice to say under no circumstances am I ungrateful."
Toso would stand, despite the cushyness of his limbs they were starting to get sore and his back would have nothing of it additionally. He'd stretch and remove his over and under coat, as despite the cold even with his multiple layers of clothing he needed to have the wounds breathe a bit before the bandages get soggy. The reveal of his wounds would be short before he put the coat back on. Signs of blood showing that they had reopened to a degree but the blood was old and dry implying it was from earlier.
"We're not tools, Shion bloop. In short, we are soldiers bloop. When we become Shinobi we swear our lives to our nation and when it came to making a choice Shiro endangered six lives for the sake of one and an estranged people. The tales you hear of legendary shinobi, they are legendary because everyday they put their lives on the line for their nations safety AND accept the punishments that come with endangering it bloop. What matters most bloop is that so long as you feel you've done the world and the nation a service that can put smiles on faces and keep others happy any punishments received after the fact will have been worth it."
Putting the final zip to his coat he plopped back down on the bench. Though making sure he remained upright and not leaning against the bench before making one final statement. "Suffice to say again, if you don't feel you've done that. I can assure you you've put a smile on at least one face." Toso let out a long exhale with a bloooooooooo. 'In the end If there's anyone who is to take blame it should be myself for not being strong enough and needing aid in the first place bloop." Clearly in a state of self depreciation, whilst Toso was the victim he couldn't help but feel the guilty party for everything that happened. Sure no one had died, but could that be said again the next time, or the time after that? Was he right to choose his family over nation? This made itself clear in his words having shifted from a more higher volume monotone to a lower one. Assuming Shion could even tell the difference. "All that torment to find out how to regenerate limbs bloop, offering myself as tribute when I can't even do it myself yet, I can at least take comfort in the fact knowing that likely delayed his research bloop"

For the first time in a very long time, Shion had nothing to say. No witty retorts, no angsty snark, just quiet contemplation. Maybe he was right. She didn't agree with the sentiment, far from it. She still would have done it all again if given the chance. Still, she could see both sides of it now, even if Shiro did blur some lines. Amazing what a short heart to heart conversation would do; a thought Shion would tuck away for a future occasion. An awkward tension fell over the two as they remained silent, at least it felt like it to Shion. In an effort to break through it, Shion cleared her throat and mumbled something along the lines of "thanks... i needed that." Of course no one would be able to tell, and if they did tell, she'd put their already busted squid a** right back in the hospital!

Standing up now fully Toso would re-attach his brush to his back again looking clunky with all his baggage. "Less of course you'd like to show me where you're staying and we can bunk together as purely consensual platonic comrades bloop. Ah, I jest." Toso would say shaking his sleeve in preparation for some kind of negative retaliation. Preemptively dodging whatever if anything was thrown his way.
"I like to believe I've the authority to dismiss you of whatever punishment Shiro placed upon you. bloop. So long as its complete that is. I'm sure he'll take my word that you've been obedient. bloop. If not, well then I'd be the one to get punished. So lets say you're dismissed on my authority." Toso would lash out one of arms to grab a nearby tree. "Well I best get going then." As Toso pulled to attempt to slingshot himself as usual he didn't move so much as three feet before spewing ink from his mouth and keeling over on his knees. "Ah, right." While his face revealed no distress this foolhardy mistake had just caused him an unfathomable pain to shoot up his arm and down his back. No hasty exits for him it seemed.

Shion rolled her eyes as Toso pressed his advance... even if it was all just a joke. She wasn't annoyed, however. It was more a reflex at this point. Besides, he did just let her free of this hellhole. Can't really be mad at that. As Toso moved to make his less than spectacular exit, Shion turned to do the same, lookimg back for a brief moment to make sure Toso was fine after his fall. Every thing seemed fine, so she gathered her stuff and left the temple grounds.... hopefully for good. [Exit]
