All right, I've been participating in the Day of Silence for four years now and the next is April 15th.
It usually doesn't bother me when people get in my face about standing up for my beliefs that people should be allowed to act as themselves, that they should be allowed to have a voice without others infringing on it.
I was at lunch today with a few of my friends and the DoS came up, we talked about it and NOH8, then some jerks come over and start insulting us all. Now, I taunt people, I know I do, but I never do it to hurt others. These people were calling us every name in the book, but we just took it. They don't know us and judging us negatively by what we defend isn't a way to learn.
I want to know what you girls think of the Day of Silence. Do any of you participate? What do you do? Have you met jerks like the ones my friends and I did? How do you react? If you don't participate, why not?
Sorry for talking so much, everybody.

Sorry for being an ignorant fool - but what is this particular DoS supporting? I may participate depending on what its for.....
I've met plenty of jerks in my time when I've been out campaigning for various things - I'm on my schools Human Rights and Fundrasing committee. Some people just need a kick in the face and to be put in the shoes of those that suffer due to hate or poverty.....they really hack me off these people.

The Day of Silence is a response to the bullying, harassment, death, etc. of people in the LGBT community.
Edit: Ravynne as a better response.

I haven't participated in it before because I didn't know it existed. But I'll be doing it this year.
I think that insulting someone for their beliefs is just wrong, and that's the whole point of the day of silence and other such events. Personally, I think that people who aren't part of the minorities that get bullied all the time should also be standing up for the rights of people who are getting trampled, because a fair world benefits everyone.
I don't think just taking it is the best answer. If you believe in your own cause, you should tell them, calmly, why you're doing it. They'll probably not listen, but other people will.

I've never participated in it before, in fact, I had no idea it existed. But, next year, for sure, I'll be participating. Maybe that'll show my dad that it's wrong to discriminate against people because of their sexuality.

I don't do the whole "silence" thing. It doesn't make for a good protest against anything, in my opinion. (Except maybe too much noise, but even then, I feel a good, loud "SHUT YOUR MOUTHS ALREADY!" is more effective xD)
I wear t-shirts stating the problem and how big a problem it is, I hand out fliers, I convince the town council to hold a meeting about it, etc. Stuff that gets the word out.
However, recently I've been considering just wearing duct tape over my mouth in public with "STOP THE HATE" written on it on the next DoS. I'm not sure about it, though.

I do similar stuff; fliers, cards explaining what's going on, and I also tend to explain to others in the week prior to the actual day.
One of my sisters wears a duct tape bracelet and cuts off pieces for people's mouths before writing NO H8 on their cheeks. She also helps by making up t-shirts with "NOH8" or "Day of Silence 20--" on them. It's real nice having her around.

Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore - No problem. I used to have a slip of paper from the first DoS I participated in the 9th grade that had a more detailed explanation of it. But I gave that to a friend.
And for some people, the Day of Silence isn't a good protest method, however as the old saying goes "Silence is golden". If a number of people are silent during this march as a sign of remembrance then it brings to light the many victims of abuse, bullying, suicide, etc because of their orientation. They are people who could not speak up for themselves. It's sort of an effort of Verstehein, or walking in another person's shoes. Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
