As night slipped away and dawn began Dark Cacophony awoke to the gentle twittering of birdsong. She shifted experimentally and yawned loudly, then stopped and focused on the warm bodies crowded against her own. Down in the earthy den she had dug out it was warm and comfortable; but even though, after having stuck in here for some time now, Dark longed to step out and simply stretch her legs. Motherly instinct had kept her within the den confines, but now they were letting up. Surely her little ones would be fine to venture out and meet the rest of the pack now.

Dark dropped her nose and nuzzled lovingly into the centre of the three pack pups. They were so tiny but so, so important. They were the future. They were everything she had worked so hard for. “Come on now…” She moved, gently nudging them away from her and stepping up into the fresh air. There she shook herself with a great deal of relish. She yipped and looked back at the den, waiting for her babies to join her.

Bakula was not thrilled by the sudden lack of ‘mummy’. He whined unhappily and pressed up for securely beside his sisters. No way was he going out there. No thank you. He’d stay exactly where he was.

Acacia had been sleeping soundly all nice and warm when her source of warmth suddenly disappeared. She opened her eyes slowly still sleepy and a bit lethargic but that wouldn't last long. She looked about the den searching the small space for her mother but she did not see her anywhere. She whimpered unhappily wanting to be with her mother more than she wanted to be sleeping.

As Bakula pressed up against her she growled softly and shoved him off. Unlike him she was going to follow momma. Getting to her feet she carefully headed for the entrance to the den. She had never been outside before but she had never been without her mother either. Her want to be with her mother was much stronger than the fear of what was out there.

She made it to the entrance of the den and in her sight was her mother just outside of the den. She hesitated for several moments before she stepped out of the entrance of the den. The moment she stepped out a small group of birds took flight in a flutter of wings. The sound spooked Acacia and sent her into a run. She ran straight into her mother feet and hid her face there.

Mother got up, leaving the pups in the slightly-less-warm den; Black Mamba grumbled sleepily as her brother snugged back against her - and then again as he was shoved harder by their leaving sister. With one small paw she swiped at Bakula, growling at him as she woke fully and heard their mother's call.

She sleepily trotted out of the den, missing the feathery-startle Acacia had run from, but seeing her sibling hiding at their mother's side she crouched low to the ground and slunk quickly to the bulk of her family; a small, pitch-colored target that wasn't worth eating, right?

Once at her mother's side, she yipped loudly at her brother, fearless once more within the safety of Mama's fangs and claws.

Dark watched in amusement when Acacia finally appeared. They were all so strong and fine. She was looking forward to the time when she could take them out and teach them to track, hunt and fight.

When the red pup suddenly hurtled towards her and into her paws, Dark brushed the little female’s hair back and kissed her head. In time she would become tougher, but for now she was happy to give some affection.

Ah, and Black Mamba was next. Very good. Dark couldn’t help but be pleased that it was her two daughters that were the bravest. She grinned and stared at the den, waiting for Bakula to show his face.

Oh no, Bakula was having none of this. Even now that he was all alone and cold. So very alone. The small male whimpered unhappily and slunk to the edge of the den, his nose appeared first and then two eyes. From this position he stared unhappily out at his family… and then after a very long moment, started to slink his way out and across what seemed like endless ground towards them.

“Oi, you didn’t call.” A sudden deep boomed. “You said you would call.” A large red-furred male came loping out of the trees, a wide toothy grin on his face as he spotted the three pups.

Dark Cacophony only yawned and gave a shrug. “You’re only going to scare them.”

As if to prove his mother right, as soon as Bakula saw the immense, furry beast coming towards him he panicked. Not knowing exactly where to run, he flopped over onto his back and stuck his legs into the air in submission.

Nashoba halted over him and stared down in surprise. “What do you think you’re doing, boy?” He grunted and flipped a limp Bakula over with his paw. “Now, let me see the other two.”

Dark gave a soft posessive growl that the alpha took quick notice of.

Black Mamba nuzzled at her mother's leg while they waited for Bakula to get his lazy bones out of the snug den...at least, until she heard this deep voice call out from (what seemed to her) nowhere and everywhere at once. She bared her tiny fangs and every single strand of fur stood on end; the smallest of nasty death-growls hiccough-rumbling from her tiny chest. Where was the Threat!? She whirled, still sticking close to her mother for protection and spotted him: he was big. He was ugly. He was grinning like an idiot and she absolutely did not like it.

Her brother dropped and rolled submissively before the hulking red brute, but she was having none of it! She wanted nothing to do with this stranger that spoke so carelessly and familiarly with Mama - at least, until she caught his scent. It was the same one that she smelled on Mama sometimes; a scent similar to her own. He was part of their pack and blood of her blood: neither of which meant that she had to like him, just that she couldn't maul him without being punished.

With another careful sniff at the big male's scent, she placed him fully: This was Mama's mate. Her sire. Demanding to see Acacia and herself in a manner that made Mama growl, which in turn made her puff up even more, ears flat against her skull as she stood at Dark's side, touching her with half her body and turned to watch Nashoba with the other half. She wanted to run over, grab her brother by the scruff and drag him back to Mama...but she couldn't quite make herself move that close.

A step or two away from Dark, a step or three closer to Nashoba and Bakula...Black Mamba crept slowly closer; crouching and growling and bristling the whole time (very likely looking ridiculously adorable: a little David going after her own personal Goliath).

Acacia relaxed at her momma's kiss realizing whatever had made the noise earlier had not been threatening to her at all. Now back to her braver self she watched as her sister appeared after her and made her way over to momma and her. Acacia took a small n** at Mamba's ear when she made it to momma's feet then joined Mamba in yipping at Bakula to get him to come out of the den.

Moments after Bakula appeared a loud booming noise pound at Acacia's ears startling her all over again. So much noise and she was spooked all over again. In between her mothers feet she was much braver though. Seeing the large male loaping towards them she barred her teeth and snapped at the air angrily. The beast startled her and she wanted to make sure he knew how angry she was at being startled.

The way he spoke to momma and Bakula only made her glare at him hard. She recognized the similiarities in his fur color and her own but only for a moment. When momma growled at the male her own growl joined in with her momma's. The growl was more like a tiny grumble and almost unheard while her momma growled. Her little growl was nothing compared to her momma's but her bravery while in her mom's secure presense could rival anyone elses.
