I have an eee and want to install Ubuntu on it. There is no CD drive so how do I get it and Firefox on it? I can download Ubuntu direct but can I then use a memory stick to put Firefox on?

Also can I get the Windows build back if I want to?

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

You can put it on a usb stick and install it that way. You can also set it up to dualboot, so that way you'll have Ubuntu and Windows both on your eeePC.

Best person to ask would be Rev. He has one or two eee pc's, and I am pretty sure he has thrown linux on them more than once.

I'm not going to say anything past this, because
- Never owned a netbook.
- My experience in linux is much higher in RPM based distros. (OpenSUSE, and CentOS.)

What is Rev's screen name? I tried looking him up on the guild list and could not find him.

I looked at the manual and there is a recovery partition. If I can be sure I am not affecting that partition can I always go back to windows?

You should be able to partition your harddrive without messing with your recovery partition. If you go through the Ubuntu installation, you can partition it just so that you've got your recovery partition, Windows partition and Ubuntu partition.

Ahem.

Travis pretty much put you on the right track. I have two EEEpcs, the 1000h and a 900. The 900 runs Mint, while the 1000h has had Ubuntu, Mint, Jolicloud, and MacOSX on it. Right now it just runs Win7.

Thanks for the Mint recommendation. I have not heard of it till now.
Did you use a CD to load it or can I use a memory stick?

Every distro of linux can be loaded on to a USB thumb drive.
And just about every help file/web page/pdf/documentation concerning installing linux from a thumb drive is pretty much the same.

Goddamnit, dude...do NOT encourage that s**t! xd

While it is simple in principle, it is NOT simple in user friendliness.

You could also make him suffer and tell him about either Gentoo or Slack.

In any case, installing Mint will be the same as the instructions for installing Ubuntu, since Mint more or less is a more graphically elegant version of Ubuntu. (Although Unity looks rather interesting too.)...and I agree..Mint is nice. If I didn't like SUSE or CentOS so much, I'd be running Mint.

The other deadly easy linux distro is PCOS Linux. It's so easy it will bore you to tears. Although, its foundation is Mandriva. (RPM based distro)

Are you trying to get me to go back to Haiku? Gaia really did not do well on that.
