What is Terraria?
Terraria is a 2D action RPG, complete with merchants, craftable weapons and armor, summonable giant bosses, and a great evil creeping across the world. Character customization is also a thing (the recolored Final Fantasy sprites you see in the video above were placeholders that have since been changed), probably with the eventual feature of custom, player-made sprites. In addition to this, it features a Minecraft-like building mechanic allowing you to show off the crazy crap that you find during the course of the game. However, it's worth pointing out that this is not a Minecraft clone. The building mechanics are secondary to the combat and exploration, and are there mainly to let you have a base of operations and house various NPCs.
Why you should care:
Terraria is multiplayer! While the current player limit is 8 players, and tossing 6 people in one world gets hectic, the absolute hard-coded limit is 255, so once modding is a thing, expect chaotic ******** worlds/a rad LSG server. World generation is random but not infinite, so packing everyone into a tighter space could lead to some really interesting architecture and cooperative mega-projects.
When can I get it?
Terraria will be releasing this Monday, May 16th on Steam. There is currently no page up, as the deal with Steam was very recent and the release was originally in June - a leaked copy pushed the developers to release early. It'll be $10 for the first week or so, and then will probably shoot up to about $15. All future DLC will be totally free.
