[ The Totem: Thunderbird ]Thunderbird is the symbol of the herd for a number of reasons. Not only is this mythic bird the king of the skies, his great wings blotting out the sun, but he is a bringer of change to the land. Thunderbird represents power and strength, values that Balrog and the rest of the herd hold to be central tenants. A beat of Thunderbird's wings stir up storms and great winds. The herd believes that their blessing of wings sets them apart from other lesser soquili, who it is their domain to soar above. They believe that their wings brings them closer to the great spirits, and that they are specially blessed. While Thunderbird is powerful and intelligent, he is also wrathful. Lo be to the soquili that defies this herd, for it will face the strength of many, who do not balk from violence. Thunderbird also brings rain and thunder and winds to the land, changing the land below when it flies above. So is it with this herd. They see themselves as bringingers of a new generation of soquili - those that are strong and proud.

[ Herd Leaders ] The founders and top-echelon of leadership of the Thunderbird herd, Balrog and Stormwild are a strong and powerful Elder life mated couple. The consider themselves equal in their leadership, though each have a special 'focus' - Balrog is much more hot-headed, strong, and aggressive, while his mate Stormwild is wise, patient, and nurturing. Essentially, they act as the mother and father figure to every member of the herd, and their word is absolute. [ Second-in-Command ] [ image here ] Maelstrom, Cataclysm, and Thunderbird are Balrog and Stormwild's three elest children and act as the "Prince" and "Princesses" of the Thunderbird Herd. They attend to the everyday managerial duties of maintaining and protecting the herd, and only Balrog and Stormwild have authority over them. They can act as the final authority on Herd issues in the absence of their parents.

[ Roles ] AdvisorsAdvisors are some of the oldest and most respected members of the Thunderbird Herd. They are retired from active duty, but are still heavily relied on by the Leadership for their experience and advice. They are often consulted for their opinion on major Herd decisions or actions. This role is invite-only, and is obtained only through extensive RP or plotting. If you have a Soquili who you think would be good for this role, please contact Sabin or Kamiki. GuardsGuards of Thunderbirds must be dedicated and strong. They wouldn’t leave the herd grounds while on duty, and their primary goal to is protect the herd from dangers. They are expected to be capable in combat, in case the need arises. PatrolsPatrols’s primary duty is to fly around the herd territory and alert the herd of anything suspicious or dangerous. They call the guards to defend against immediate threats like skinwalkers, but can also act as a border patrol to any harmless or visiting Soquili just passing through. Soquili that aren’t considered threats may pass through the outskirts of their territory from time to time, and generally the Patrols will keep their eyes on them or act as an escort. DiplomatsWhile diplomats consider the Thundebird territory their “home base” these Soquili are free to come and go and explore the world. They are expected to keep their eyes and ears out for news and possible dangers in the Soquili lands as a whole; and serve as a recruiter for new potential herd mates. They are free to offer shelter and guidance for any orphaned/abandoned/lost feathered-winged Soquili in peril. Craftsmen and ArtisansThese Soquili are the artists of the herd. They can make tradable goods to barter or trade with the outside, such as jewelry and trinkets from feathers and stones that are found in their mountainous territory. They can either give their wares to the Gatherers to trade, or may occasionally leave the territory to go peddle their crafts to other herds in the Kawani land. Gatherers Gatherers are responsible for bringing in food and resources from outside the territory. During plentiful times and lean, they are expected to go out into the world and bring back foodstuffs that doesn’t grow readily in the mountains; exotic fruit and berries, grasses, hay, nuts, soft bark, etc. NursemaidsSoquili that can act as a kind of “babysitter” for any young Soquili whose parents needs a break or need to perform their other duties. They are responsible for caring for foals, teaching them the basics of food finding and flying, and shelter them if any danger arises. HealersWhether it be a natural ability due to unicorn heritage, or a learned skill in herbs and medicine, these Soquili are relied on to heal the sick and injured of the herd. MembersMembers that do not have a defined role/specific duty in the herd. These Soquili are considered "on call" to perform duties as needed - such as Patrols or Gatherers, if the need arises.

[ Traditions & Tenants ] [ Flight ]All members of the Thunderbird herd must be capable flyers. While feathered-winged breeds (Winds, Angeni, Hippogryphs) are considered superior in flight, non-feathered winged breeds ('Suti, Flutters) are allowed in the herd if they are mated or children of other feather-winged members. [ Love and Mating ]Lifemating is highly encouraged in the Thunderbird Herd, as they consider family extremely important for the loyalty and health of the herd, but this is not required. All Thunderbirds are expected to mate exclusively with winged Soquili. One mistake may be overlooked, but would have to be done in secret and without Balrog's knowledge. Balrog would't approve or tolerate any breeding with non-winged, but Stormwild may forgive one mistake. The mother would be expected to leave the herd (on a 'Diplomat' or 'Gatherer' rotation, perhaps) and could return after the birth. Only winged children would be considered for membership. Lifemating or multiple breedings with non-winged Soquili would result in your Soquili being asked to leave the Thunderbird lands. [ Naming ]In honor of their Totem, many Soquili born into the Thunderbird are named after elements of weather or other destructive forces of nature. This is not a requirement, but a long-standing tradition. [ Enemies ]Skinwalkers - Skinwalkers are not tolerated at all in or near the Thunderbird territory. Pawed mutants would be greeted with heavy suspicion due to their common association with Walkers. Kalona - Kalona are highly untrusted by the Thunderbird leadership, and are not readily invited to be part of the Thunderbird herd. Kalona mixes may be considered as mates for existing members, but only after intense examination and vetting by the Herd leadership.
