I am getting so anxious to move out. I just turned 23, I'm still living at home. I have not one but TWO years left of full time studies. I took a while figuring out what I wanted to do AND I screwed up big time last year in micro and failed it (not for lack of ability but just being an idiot and not studying enough until it was too late) so not only can I not afford to move out, I can't even save up for it yet. I'm working on paying off all the debt I worked up this year. When school starts late august and my summer contract is up, I work at least 5hrs a week and need to look for a second job in a clinic so I can stop just managing and start saving for that fateful day.

I was looking at Condos online today (i'm very anti apartment I don't want to throw my money where I'll never see it again) There's a couple affordable ones close enough to where I plan on working. (Stage is already guaranteed mine I just gotta impress them enough to hire me AND hope they hire me despite not actually graduating when my stage is done sad )

So I've decided to try to start keeping track of how much the animals cost cause my big thing is they are ALL coming with me when I leave. I'm already covering like 99% of their costs. Food, vet bills, grooming, etc etc. Car and phone bills are being taken care of. (The debt was from having car repairs and emergency vet bills but being unemployed for several months) So the only costs I can' afford YET but need to make sure won't be a problem are 1. Mortgage 2. Utilities like electricity, hydro etc. 3. Food and clothing. Anything I'm missing here? I consider transportation in the car expenses that I'm already covering. I also already cover clothing and it's not like I'm a constant shopper or anything. I just know that sometimes stuff needs replacing.

Anyway, the reason I've gone on about this is. Well I know we all live in different areas and prices are different. But I was wondering what you guys pay in rent/mortgage. Anyone live alone? What your electricity heating etc costs are, basically how much you need to make in a month to not just get by but be comfortable. I don't want to rush out and constantly be stressed about making the bills. I will endure an extra year if needbe to save up more. I think starting sallary for a tech in Montreal is around 15-16/hr. And I'm assuming after I've been there for a year they will have at least 35hrs a week for me. I'm doing 45hrs a week right now so I'm sure 40hrs would be good. That's typical full time hours isn't it?

I know how you feel. I'm 24 and still living with my parents. I too am getting anxious to move out. I'd rather move into a house, though, and hope to be able to do so. I too am going to take ALL my animals with me (part of why I want to get a house, so that way I don't have to worry about having to pay more just because of having animals, or having to leave some behind because they are not allowed there.). I'm also tracking how much their care costs, as I'm paying for 100% of their care now.

I will finally be graduating from College in December. I changed majors a couple times. Most of my money I'm earning from my job is being saved towards being able to move out. I hope to be able to move out within a year, to a year and a half after I graduate if I plan things correctly, though I will wait longer if I have to.
40 hours a week is normal full-time hours.

Cool, someone in the same boat as me. biggrin Once I graduate, I'll probably work for a full year to save up a large downpayment for the condo (provided I find an affordable one that allows dogs) I think usually ground floors are good for that. So that actually puts me at moving out in 3yrs. sad But I imagine I'll need that year to settle in at work and make sure that I'm staying there, and I'll slowly start collecting things for my place. Furniture etc. I may have to go away for a while to get certified for canine physio. But I dunno how soon after graduating that will be. It might postpone the move a bit since I don't wana move in and then take off and pay for an empty home.

cєℓєsтιαℓ ғιʀєғℓιєs:

Ahh, good luck. Living on your own is great; someone needs to hire me so I can do it again. crying

When my boyfriend and I lived in the mobile home, we spent around $360 on bills, including our necessities and our pets' necessities. During the summer, electric was about $120-$150 every other month, which shot up to $400 during the winter, but only because the heating duct had a massive hole in it (which the landlord didn't bother to fix mad ). Water was around $20-$30 (maybe, could be cheaper), and garbage was included in the lot rent. Food varied, but between the two of us $200 would just meet our needs, and $300 let us eat comfortably.

I've had a spreadsheet on what our budget would look like if we were to live comfortably, and it's around $2100 for the both of us + pets, but that includes things like both of us having car insurance and making car payments ($1600 without). Adjusting it for a single-person household seems to be around $1800, with car payments at $200 and rent at $800. I'm pretty sure I have all of the basics: insurance, rent, phone, internet, car, electric, water/garbage, food, pets, necessities, and car gas.

I'm almost 22 and still living at home, but that'll hopefully be changing in the near future.

Budget (monthly) includes, roughly:
Mortgage - I'm hoping to get something around $300, but that's just because I make very little; standard is usually closer to $1000
Utilities (water, gas, electric) - I'm estimating at around $500, but it's a guess and probably on the low side
Food - going with around $200
Dog - $50 (food is about $20, but then there's treats and extras, plus setting some aside for vet bills and such)
Car (gas) - $30 (right now, but if I switch to the job I want it's going to jump considerably; same as my pay, though, I should hope)
Insurance - this will be the b***h and I don't even know how much it'll be
Entertainment (internet, phone; I'm not worried about tv at this point) - my phone bill is currently $50, I don't know what internet is
Extras (clothes, cleaning supplies, hygenic products) - I'm going to say $30, because they're not an every-month expense
Savings/Emergency fund - I'd like to put a couple hundred aside each month.
With a condo, you also have to worry about condo fees, but some of your utilities may be covered by this.

Breaking it down, I really can't afford to live on my own right now because I have really crappy pay (I make about $1200/month) - this is why I'm hoping to switch jobs, but the place I want to work doesn't have any openings right now; wherever I work next, I will be looking for at least $15/hour (Alberta minimum wage, not serving liquor, has just been bumped to $9.40/hour).

I'm also looking for a small house rather than an apartment/condo, trailer, or multiplex simply because I don't want to be paying that extra monthly fee to rent the land on top of a mortgage (and I live in a small town rather than a city, so there are some reasonably priced houses sometimes)

It's also easier to get a mortgage if you've had your current job for at least three months (so that the trial period is over)

OMG internet! Forgot about that, that's a necessity. Cable I can live without, just so long as I have internet lol. The websites I look at annoy me. They have no IMPORTANT details, like if condo fees include heat or electricity and if they allow pets. I know condo fees suck, but, if you have house there's property taxes. I would certainly get a house if I could afford one close enough to work. I need to consider the amount of money it would cost me in gas if I got a house in an affordable area. If there's any bridges where I'll be stuck in traffic etc.

I'm no help there, we know the lady who owns our house so our rent is really cheap. Under normal circumstances, our apartment goes for $800/month. We only pay $300. Since it's a two family and the electricity/water are on one bill, we split it with Fred's parents who live in the main house. This place is a gravy train. I pay the internet though, it's $25/month for the highest speed At&T had, 1 year contract. No cable, but we each have our cell phones ($25/month each) and we have a magic jack as a house phone which is $20/year ($40 to buy the jack). Food and pets are probably our biggest monthly expense, but we don't eat a lot so we've probably been spending about $100/month on food. We live comfortably on around $600/week with our combined incomes. Do you have any trustworthy friends you could have as a roomie?

haha nnooo, they're all married, engaged, living with their long term boyfriend orrrr, not trustworthy. I'd really rather go it alone honestly. I know it's selfish, not as good for the environment, and aiming a lil high but...I have the rest of my life to live WITH someone and I've been living with my parents all this time which has allowed me to afford a car and (until the unemployment spell I had), save up money for moving out.

This isn't much help, but I only pay $650 for rent and all utilities, $70 for auto insurance, $40 for phone, $120-$150 in gas for the Jeep, and roughly $300 for grocries.

So for me and the animals its roughly $1100 a month. I think thats the first time I've added everyting up... And I seem to be throwing $500 out the window... I better start keeping better track of what I am spending.

I have only been on my own for a month though.

See, I am EXTREMELY anti-condo. The HOA's in those things are the biggest pain in the a** you could ever imagine. I've talked to so many people on various forums faced with the choice of giving up their dog or moving after living in a condo for months or years, because some dipshit decided to complain about something. Then the HOA steps in and says they have to fix the (usually nonexistent) problem or get rid of the dog. Or the HOA rules change so that size/type of dog is suddenly excluded. I'd never live in a house with a neighborhood HOA either.

Fees and what's included vary incredibly from place to place, same as what sort of pets are allowed - you're probably best off calling the places.

@Savage Technically an entire neighborhood could decide to ban my breed. Well, I don't have any stereotyped pets, but just saying. Also, an apartment landlord could technically pull the same s**t couldn't he? I'm just saying apertment vs condo I'll take condo. I would love to have a house. Even a tiny lil bungalo. But aside from moving out of the city which is not realistic because the only two hospitals in the province that do physio are in or near the city, well, houses are not really affordable for one person. Maybe a duplex but even then it's pushing it a bit. I'm looking for homes under 200 thousand. I haven't added up the mortgage I can afford yet.

So far for me. Insurance is $50, might go up though next year I did have that one stupid friggin accident I hit a PARKED car gonk

Gas well, that was nearly $40 a week traveling to school but lately it's been more around $20 a week just going to work and back.

Phone is $40/month.

Cat food is 25 a month. Dog is free. But with treats for training, suppliments etc, he's another 25 a month. If I can't manage to keep my job at the pet food store when I start at the hospital I don't know how much he will cost. I can pay full price for Acana/Orijen or I can put him on the vet food at cost. Maybe Hills Nature's best if I couldn't afford the ACANA anymore.

Vet bills should be reasonable when I start working and getting stuff at cost. I can also get pet insurance at a discount.

That's 240 a month not including food. (no wonder paying off my debt is taking so long) I'm pulling in $1560 after taxes each month but my whole pay goes to visa the second I get it. This month I'm only making the minimum payment and using it all to get new suspension on my car. I figure EVERYONE will be payed off by the time my summer contract ends on Aug 12th. Then I'm on 5hrs a week again only 214 a month, not even enough to pay my expenses so I'll get a second job and maybe more hours at the store. So I can start saving up again.

If I got one of THESE condos, I could WALK to work. Zero gas expense baby. And I THINK they allow pets, an old class mate lived in one of these and he had a dog. (It's across the street from where I went to high school.)
