That rreeaalllyy depends on your lifestyle. Try the breed quiz on dogbreedinfo.com also check your shelters they can often get puppy mutts in need of a good home. Make sure you don't get a dog that has more energy than you or requires more grooming than you have time for.

Tell us about your lifestyle.

How big is your yard?
Do you live in the country, town, or in a city?
How much time every day are you willing to dedicate to:
Grooming?
Exercise?
Training?
How much are you willing to spend on it's veterinary bills, food, and accesories (bed, leash, dishes, collar, tags, etc.) per year? Per month?
What is the maximum weight of the dog?
Purebred or shelter?
Will it be allowed on furniture?
Will it be allowed in the house?
Will it be allowed off-leash?
Are there strict noise restraints?
How often will you take it outside?
Prefered method of potty training?
Will you buy special accessories for your pet if it has specific requirements?
Do you plan to show it in something such as agility or in the show ring?

Are you set on getting a baby puppy (as in 2-ish months old, you're the first owner after the breeder, teach it everything from scratch), or are you considering/open to an older puppy (knows the basics but will still require work)?

How old are you? Are you planning to move away from home for post-secondary education? What will happen with the puppy/dog when you are ready to move out of your parents' house?

You can research breeds. I would suggest going to your library and seeing if they have any books on dogs. The dog bible has been really good I think. It tells you how much energy they tend to have and who the best owner for them would be.

Of course, if you go to a shelter or rescue you can always hang out with the dog and see and, in the case of rescue, maybe get to talk to a foster about how the dog acts.
