So I bought a bunch of computer parts and assembled them and put them together to make a working system. I feel awesome having done so without breaking anything, even though it took me around 12 hours to go from unpacking s**t to having windows be fully updated and protected with Security Essentials.

That isn't twelve hours later, either. That's twelve hours of time put into this s**t. Worth it, though.

I used techreport.com's summer system guide and took their Utility Box idea, but added a couple things Mario told me about, and got a case suggested by a friend. The case has a ton of built in fans and weighs thirty pounds by itself. It looks like Darth Vader would use it.

For the tech peoples:

Congratulations man. I do enjoy it when I can help people find out that building a computer is not as difficult as it seems, and learning how to use it, troubleshoot it, tweak it, and maintain it.

The biggest problems I had were:

1. Getting my DVD drive in. Turns out I had to break off these flaps to get the optical drive in, which I didn't think I was supposed to. Now it's in perfectly. Weird.

2. Screwing in the motherboard. It was a bit hard to get in the correct position.

3. Putting in the RAM. I had to press harder than I was comfortable with, it was a bit hard.

4. Wasted time trying to find a place to plug in my case's USB 3.0 front drives. Turns out my motherboard doesn't have a place for extra USB 3.0 just the built in ones.

All in all it was more time consuming than I thought it would be, but the next time I upgrade it will be a piece of cake since I know my case and parts now.

I want to see this case.

I assume it was this case.

I saw the white version at Microcenter, we refer to it as the Storm Trooper.

Also The Imperial Guard.

Putting in DVD drives and what have you kind of sucks though. It took me a while to figure it out because you have to break pieces off to put it in, as far as I can tell.

I forget exactly how the system is, but I do know it's toolless and those are almost universally a pain in the balls.

Also I have no ******** clue how to get the front mic and headphone ports to work. I thought it was plugged in but apparently it isn't. What the balls. I'll try connecting it with the HD audio plug next time.

Also this morning my computer scared me. It was all "THE CPU FAN IS NOT RUNNING" and im like '********' so I didn't use it until I got home. I got my leftover thermal paste out in case I hadn't applied enough and it needed more and mentally prepared myself for having to fix wires and s**t.

Turns out the plug for the cpu fan into the motherboard was just a bit loose.

Ahaha, oh man.
I remember doing s**t like that a lot, it sucks so much because you freak out thinking it's something major.

Yeah I know. Thank God I just suck really bad.

Also my friend told me that since I managed to build a computer myself and figure out what whatsit goes into which whosit that I could probably get an A+ cert pretty easy since that's the majority of what it is.

From what I understand that's pretty much it, yeah.
