Ambitious
[ Genin ] - Like many Genin, Souji has a strong forward drive. However, for Souji he is ambitious to a fault. He never compares himself to his equals, rather always to his betters. His grandfather taught him that he will never improve by comparing himself to those at the same level at him. "Look upward and forward," his grandfather would say, "and you will only grow stronger." The elder elaborated the idea, "Look downward and backward and you will only rest on your laurels and fixate on the few things you cannot change." Souji took this to heart in his training, though sometimes it is more detrimental to his progress to compare himself to those he will not reach for years. Ultimately, his drive is strong enough that regardless of to whom he is comparing himself, he will always continue to reach as high as he can. The failures of his parents, though he consciously dismisses them, serve as a constant reminder in the back of the head - a constant drive to continue to achieve.
Passionate
[ Genin ] - Souji's brash attitude would be more politely described as "passionate." In literally everything that he does, Souji gets really involved and always tries his hardest. Even if it is not particularly what he is supposed to be doing, he will try his best every single time. Though it has rarely happened thus far, this could lead to issues in his drive to go even beyond orders to help out the village in anyway that he can. However, it is important to know that he always has the village's best interests at heart. They are like family to him, as among the Shinobi of the village are some of the only people who accepted him in spite of who his parents are. It is important with any of Souji's actions to keep this in mind, as his passion for helping might be interpreted as a disrespect for rules and the village's leadership, though quite the opposite is actually true.
Respectful
[ Genin ] - Due to the somewhat harsh upbringing of Souji's grandfather, he has had a deep respect for his betters and elders driven into his personality. While many of his classmates did not regard all of the teachers in the highest regard, Souji would always bow, never speak unless spoken to, and when speaking to a teacher always refer to the teacher as "sir," "ma'am," or the appropriate other honorific. This more than anything else set him apart from the rest of his peers, as his respect made him more productive in his work as well as made his teachers view him in higher regard as well. And, contrary to the whispers of his peers, Souji was not brown-nosing: it was simply his nature as a person. His grandfather would always tell him that those who were born higher than he, or those who had more worldly experience than him, deserved a greater respect. As a child, Souji even viewed his grandfather bowing to his own elders, or even the younger Kage or Jounin. It only made sense that Souji would absorb such behaviors.
Isolated
[ Genin ] - Despite his more ambitious and passionate behaviors, Souji is rather detached from others. With a few exceptions, he does not let anyone get too close to him. In the past, it only ever hurt him. Thus, even at such a young age, Souji has learned to keep most at a distance and focus upon improving himself alone. Many who know Souji would be surprised to hear that he viewed the village as family, aside from one of his teachers in the past, he never really became close to anyone. It would take a great amount to become friends with Souji, though those who do become close to him will see that he is a fiercely loyal friend, both to the village and to those around him. It is important to note that he does not have particularly apathetic or aloof traits; more than anything else, this trait means that Souji does not force his motivations or feelings upon others, and rather will quietly try to succeed.

Sometimes, to make everything bearable, one must paint their own picture of events. People close their eyes and walk forward, making the world around them something different: something that is what they think it should be. Others may look upon one man's world and see it as they claim it "is" - maybe it is just that, or maybe they are the ones with the misconception. The truth is an impossible thing: it will swallow a man and chew him to pieces, without rhyme nor reason. Thus people put on their blinders, and can hope for nothing more than to never face what they have never faced. They can hope simply to live their lives blind. Live their lives as if the world they had blocked never existed. And, if they blocked it, the world never would exist for them. All that was real, these people told themselves, was what they believed. To block at the world, the truth, and to see it as it is easy. Especially for children, this can often be the only way they can take the pain: to pretend it isn't there. Souji Asano had a hard upbringing, but he especially bore his way through everything by pretending it wasn't there. After all, this was the only way to keep the truth from crushing his tiny self.

Flash back twelve or so years, to a rugged rogue Shinobi and a prostitute. He never really belonged anywhere - another son in a family of Shinobi who had long since lost their place in most societies. She failed her father, and left to keep herself from facing his scorn. Little did he know that the village he had so recently left did accept him. Little did she know that her father did not dislike her, until she left. But they chose their realities, and thus met in an area inhabited by outcasts such as themselves. Their child would never know either of them. Aside from the basics, he would not care to know either of them. After the fact, she sent her child to live with her father. This illegitimate child was her father's grandson, and thus he accepted the young boy. The boy took on neither his father's name - Mugen - nor his mother's self-given name. Instead, he took the name of his grandfather: Asano. A name fairly well-known in Kirigakure, the village which would become this boy's home. He would be brought up with the knowledge that he was an illegitimate child and the son of two outcasts, however only because his grandfather did not believe in raising him on lies. His grandfather was not a touchy-feely man, and ultimately would give little love to his grandson save typical sage advice to keep him from further destroying the family name as his mother had. But above all else, the young boy would not let this define him.

Seven years later, the boy has grown to be a part of the village. Souji Asano is the name by which he is know, and it is a name known to be the grandson of his grandfather rather than the son of his mother. There is little to no prejudice against him, but he is still sensitive to the issue. He has little interest in his mother, however he is well aware of his father's heritage, as at this point he had incidentally discovered his doujutsu. Young Souji's greatest fear, which would last through his life, was that he would meet his father. The boy feared what his father might say or do; after all, Souji's father had little interest in his mother, and probably even smaller of an interest in his son. Both of his parents - failures. But their failure would not define him. Even at this point, Souji began to thrive as a Shinobi. His skills were rapidly increasing, allowing him to get into mischievous situations, such as thievery, though simply for the sake of adventure and excitement. At the encouragement of his grandfather, Souji began to attend Kirigakure's academy, learning to eventually become one of the village's Shinobi.
Having known little familial love, it would not come as a surprise that Souji would latch on to a wandering warrior living in Kirigakure. A former Kumo Shinobi who, Souji quickly learned, was a member of Souji's same bloodline. The Shinobi was too old to be a member of Kiri's Shinobi, however he was surprisingly loyal nonetheless. In addition to Souji's typical studies, this Shinobi began to teach Souji more about his bloodline as well as the Kumo Taijutsu style for the sake of furthering Souji's Shinobi skills. Soon, Souji was spending more time with this man than his own grandfather, which worried the latter. Souji's grandfather commanded that he was no longer to visit this old man, but Souji blatantly disregarded his grandfather's orders. This angered his grandfather, who feared that Souji would become as rebellious and useless as his mother. Though Souji would never readily admit that it happened, he would ultimately lead to the old man's death. Maybe, Souji told himself, it would have happened one way or another. Maybe, Souji reminded himself on the most frightening of nights, the old man was still watching over him, having just left so that Souji could continue to better himself on his own.
The old man's home burned, and he was never seen again. Soon after, Souji's grandfather died of mysterious illness. The former received no funeral, his home was cleared within days, while the latter received a grand ceremony where his body was burned on a pyre. Within a few weeks, Souji watched the only two people in his life leave through the flames. He could never look at fire the same way again, though with both of the deaths he turned a blind eye to them, removing them from his memory so that his depression would not stop him in his tracks.

The day has finally come! Souji graduated from the academy and is finally ready to receive his headband from the Kage, Sypher Yokai.
Relationships:

• [ Yuri ] - In the short conversation upon first arriving at the Kage's office, Souji had barely met the receptionist to be sent on a mission to find the "missing" Kage.
• [ Sypher Senju ] - Meeting under unusual circumstances, Souji has a slightly different perception of the Mizukage than he might have otherwise. This view is ultimately unsure of what exactly to think of him.
• [ Tekkou Terrozaki ] - Once again, Souji only briefly met the white haired Shinobi, and was slightly confused by the chuunin's behaviors. |
