So, since Rascal is having urinary tract issues, clearly Puck needs to as well! He didn't eat dinner last night, or breakfast this morning, which is NOT normal- this cat is the reason we have child locks on our cupboards. Then Chris calls to tell me he was crying in the litter box trying to go pee. gonk

Of course I left work and rushed him to the vet, and OF COURSE we couldn't get a urine sample. But he thinks that by the symptoms its probably a UTI. He gave us some saw palmetto tincture to relax the urethra so it at least won't hurt to go pee tonight, and we're taking him back to spend the day at the clinic tomorrow so they can try to get urine. He does feel better I think, he went pee without crying earlier.

Seriously though Gaby, our animals really need to stop communicating these things. evil

Ummm, wow....

Well, the good news is he's peeing! A blocked cat or crystals is just really scary. I wish you lived closer, I'd be like, give me some pee and I will test it ffoorrr yyoouu! Cause at least I never had to take Rascal TO the vet. But he never stopped eating either.

I just did a subq fluid therapy on him. First time, not including last night which was a failure sept that I got him to drink half of it lol. Anyway, I hesitate on the puncture which of course hurts more, but once I'm in he's oblivious as to what's happening. It's good practice causes chances are in a few years I'll have to do this. I want to put it off though cause I'm worried it I do it more than just this week, like if I start him on it now when his specific gravity is still not bad and creatinine is just a bit high. Well, by the time he really needs it he might come to hate it. He might see me coming with the bag and run. My teacher says it's like dialysis though, it flushes the kidneys out and does a world of good.

A blockage was my major concern and why I rushed him right in. Plus him not eating is a MAJOR thing- the only meal he has ever refused in his entire life was his breakfast when he had a broken tooth.

He is at least well hydrated (I add water to every meal), so we don't have to worry about fluids for now.

It helps if you have someone to do it with you when you first start out. One to keep the cat busy while someone else tends the needle. My father and I always used to do it together. Initially when we started I would have literally a fist full of some of Picasso's favorite goodies like hotdog or turkey. Nearly the entire time I would be stuffing his face with stuff. Once he got used to the routine I didn't need as much goodies, but I always like to treat for these sort of things. If you want you can even condition the sight of the bag=good things even before you start injecting. That way you know when you pull that bag out you are going to have a cat running over to you rather than away.

@ Savage- I hope your boy ends up okay.

Ya, lemme know if it turns out to be just a cystitis, cause I might have to freak out. At least with a UTI antibiotics will clear it right up.

@Krissim, my issue with Rascal is if food is present he will not stay lying down. He will wake right up and stand to get all the food right away. If he's half asleep, I can make him think I'm just petting him. I was hoping to turn it into a cuddle session. It would be helpful if someone held the bag lol, but maybe I can rig one of those mobile poles. I saw a suggestion for hanging it from a clothe hanger in a bathroom shower. Maybe an old coat hanger at a garage sale or something. And ya, someone to distract him when I put the needle in and I'd be all set.

They got a urine sample today, but didn't have time to process it- they REALLY squeezed him in today. But Dr. Steve is going to go in tomorrow to examine the sample, and call to let me know what's up. Meanwhile the saw palmetto is really helping him feel better!

They didn't have time for a dipstick? sad If there's bacteria you would probably get a positive for nirtites and maybe blood or leucocytes. Then again, before you get antibiotics they have to determine WHICH bacteria it is. Which means preparing a urine smear. Fly the pee out here I will do it for you, oh wait, I don't own a microscope lol.

Sooo his urinalysis was completely normal. No blood, no crystals, no bacteria, totally normal. neutral We're not really sure what was happening. Obviously there was something wrong, since he wouldn't eat and was having pain, and the saw palmetto cleared things up. The vet thinks it could have just been a urethral spasm, which was causing pain that day. We're going to keep him on the saw palmetto for two weeks, and see how he goes from there.
