After what happened to Hope. Putting her on my tv for her to slip and fall and die. You would think I would be careful with my fragile babies. But no, I was such an unforgivable moron. I thought because my rats had never chewed my wires, that they just wouldn't. I thought I could leave Aida alone in my room for 15mins because I'd done it before. After all AIDA is the behaved one.

Well after I ate dinner, I went to round her up since Cowboy had his vet appointment. But I called and called and she wouldn't come. I found her behind the bookcase where all my fish tank wires are hidden. She's never been back there before, and she wasn't moving. I reached in and pulled her out, and went to put her in her cage but she didn't want to go, she didn't want her almond either. So I had a good look at her, and her breathing seemed heavy. I called my vet, cancelled Cowboy's appointment and rushed Aida in instead. They have an exotic vet with very little experience but the only other exotic that was open was very far and I honestly thought she might die during the trip I wanted the closest vet.

By the time we got there, it became obvious that her lip was badly swollen, and upon further inspection, it looked like there was a burn mark. This confirmed my suspicions. The vet gave her a shot for the pain. And gave me a supply of antibiotics to try and feed her. She said the only thing left to do now is wait and hope. There's no way of knowing this early if there was internal damage from the shock. In a few days time, we might be able to tell on xrays.

I just can't believe it. If both my original rats die of unatural causes because of my own poor judgement, I just don't think I could live with that. It seems like my life is made up of little decisions, just lil mistakes, that have huge impacts on me. First, overtraining Cowboy, or, well who knows, an hour of frisbee and he's resting for 6 months. My car gets stuck in the drain whole, I gas to get out and my wheel wasn't straight, I hit my mom's car. That was a 300 dollar repair. I forget for a moment about the photo radar and wasn't watching my speed, 110 dollar ticket. I put Hope down on the tv for a minute to change and she dies at only 7 months old. I made the decision, to not try to round up Aida before leaving my room to eat. I knew there were wires they could get too. I can handle the 100 dollar vet bill as my punishment, but I can't lose Aida. Not like this.

awe sad its not your fault, accidents happen, rats are just like little kids, they get into mischief before you can even know what they are up to!

Aww, I'm sorry, Gabby. *hugs* Its not your fault, really. Things happen that we cant control. There was no way of knowing what would happen, what will happen, and what can happen.

well, I did know that rats + wires = risk. I just never though it would happen. And now I'm praying that all it is is a burned lip. That the shock didn't go through her whole body or damage any organs. And I vow to buy a whole bunch of plastic covers for all the wires in my room. Even the ones they never go near. And no more roaming until everything is covered.

Edit: She was such a good girl despite all the stress. I brought the emergency cage but decided to keep her in my sweated because she was comfortable and felt warm and safe and I could monitor her there. All the techs thought this was so adorable. She didn't want to hold still for the vet, or be on the table, she just wanted to snuggle with mama, but when it came time to give her a shot of metacam, and the vet was having a bit of diffifulty piercing hr thick skin, she screamed, but never even thought of biting or scratching anyone. And the second you let her go she was climbing back into my sweater.

I think everyone makes big mistakes. My animals have almost died because of mistakes several times, I've just been lucky so far. She had never chewed wires, so you assumed she wouldn't try. Kind of like when I assumed my guinea pigs couldn't get out of the outdoor pen, and would of been eaten had I not just happened to be playing with sparky outside the moment they escaped, and was able to lock him away while I spent an afternoon chasing rodents around my yard.

Hope aida pulls through. At least you can learn from your mistakes, and now prevent any other rats you ever own from chewing

You can't beat yourself up too much- stuff like this happens. I don't know that I ever posted about it in the guild, but we almost lost Roscoe Jenkins once because I let him loose in the whole house, not just the living room and kitchen like they were usually restricted to. He climbed out the dryer vent and got outside. I didn't even know he was missing until he scratched at the front door! Oh, I felt so horrible. sad

We all screw up. None of us are perfect. And you're fixing the problem, which most people wouldn't worry about. All you can do is live and learn.

thx, but since our animals are telepathically connected, you better watch all electrical units around your animals this week.

I hope she pulls through and is okay.

It can be tough with animals, especially us animal people that want to spoil them and let them free roam. I've had a few close calls with my praying mantises. Like the time my cat was in my room on my top bunk. I had no idea he was in there. My mantis was on the bunk below and I left to brush my teeth. About the time I got the toothbrush in my mouth I heard the familiar sound of my cat plopping down from the top bunk to the bottom. I raced in expecting to see carnage. Instead I see a cat down on the floor but no mantis. Thank the heavens my sweet girl could look out for herself better than I was. She had flown herself to safety from my bed and landed on top of a tent I had in my room at the time. It could have so easily gone the other way though.

A few days back, I nearly stepped on my mantis Merlin when she managed to get from my desk to the floor. She apparently was crawling her way to Kirby. She might even have started climbing on him. I noticed she had moved down and was leaning to look, think she was hanging under the desk not on the door. Kirby looks up to see what I am doing and next thing I know a fat female mantis is ran about an inch from where I had just stuck my foot across my floor.

At the end of the day all we can do is try to learn from our mistakes and prevent them as best we can in the future.

You can't blame yourself. Even the most well behaved animals do things like that from time to time. You may not remember because it was a few years ago, but Koga once chewed through the cord to the living room lamp. And he's a cat, they're supposed to free roam and know the difference. Point being, accidents happen!

boy that metacam sure works. Aida was totally herself again in an instant, done snuggling, wanted in her cage, wanted food, wanted it NOW and was frustrated that it wouldn't fit in her mouth with her fat lip. Tried to drink but seemed to have trouble. So I set out a flat dish of water and a bowl of oatmeal with a chopped up strawberry, nice, soft, small things to eat.

Only now she's so lively, that antibiotics were incredibly difficult. First, I went in with the tiny syringe and she charged it thinking it was food, well, it smells tastes like banana so, ya. But in doing so I spilt some, possibly all. I dunno. So I decided to try to give another one. But then she didn't want it anymore. I tried putting it on my finger and getting her to lick it, nuthin. Finally I gave up and tried to stick it right in her mouth. But when I finally got the thing in I was so quick on squeezing it out I heard "SWOOSH" so now I'm like, well s**t, I hope she didn't inhale it she'll wind up with frigging pulmenary edema.

Ugh, this is going to be rough. And I was reading that infection is the leading cause of death in people hospitalized for electrocution, so getting these antibiotics in her is important. I might even ask my teacher if I can bring her in to the experimental animal class, let her "demonstrate" how to administer oral antibiotics lol

I had to give my rats antibiotics once for a foot infection. I just held her, stuck it in her mouth and slowly squirted it out little by little. SHe had 2 different ones, the banana she liked but there was another one (idk the flavor) which she did not, so it took forever but it worked.

Omg she will nnoottt hold still. Getting it in her mouth was hell. Hopefully I will do better next time. And I like the idea of mixing it with food, but I don't want to waste too much if she decides she doesn't like wtv I mix it with.

Does she like yogurt? That might work. Though maybe she was just impatient, she might do better tomorrow.

I thought about yogurt, then, I wasn't too sure about mixing probiotic with antibiotics lol. She also has two or three more pain med doses. One a day. Though that is for pain management and isn't quite as important as the antibio

I'm glad she's doing better. Rats seem to pretty tough little things. Keep updated on how she does!
