I don't really often post in the Guild much, but this ain't exactly something I can put over in Pets!, really.

Those who know me know that I have/had issues with my immediate dept. manager. I've worked past the "I'm pretty sure I don't like you," stage to a more civil, "You do your thing, I'll do mine, let's work together for a common goal" type of stage. We're neutral. She doesn't talk to me unless she has to, and I reciprocate. But I try to keep it friendly, with an "Okay, I can do that~". The entire department communicates passive-aggressively by way of informational sheets and dry erase boards.

Anywho! That aside, I think I finally concluded why she and I clash like we do. Other than the fact that customers don't much like her snippy attitude, but generally find me agreeable.

I went in to check my schedule and see what new fish we got in (Purple Glos, we carry them now), and kind of meandered around for about an hour, debating over what to give my bettas as tankmates, if anything. Ended up running it past her.
"Debating if I should put shrimp or Otos with my bettas. 10g tank."
"Otos." No hesitation whatsoever.
"Okay... Why Otos over shrimp?"
"Bettas eat shrimp." Derp. I know that. Can I get a little more depth than that? :/
I don't know if I just don't have the patience to seek why Otocinclus make better cleaners for a 10 than shrimp do according to her, or what, but I left it there. And now I'm sitting here thinking, "I should have asked about Otos and schooling, how many per side, whether the algae wafers would do damage to my bettas if they ate too much, what good food choices are for Otos, and whether snails are just better choices overall."

I digress. My conclusion for our clashes is our seemingly conflicting knowledge bases. I don't give a damn about her years with the company versus my one year; her pet care knowledge and stances just clash with mine on more fronts than I care to recall, and I swear I feel like I'm the department nanny or something. ._.;

Does that make me a careful/knowledgeable pet parent and associate? Or am I just being an arrogant, elitist a** because I think I know better?

I'm probably being an a**, knowing me. I like to tell customers that I'm a betta specialist. If that ain't arrogant, I don't know what is. x3

I dunno that you should call yourself the betta specialist. Then again I use to call my a**. man the rodent/lagomorph specialist simply cause he was the only one in the store who had any (at the time). But he had many years experience working in the pet food store and I still believe I know more about food and more about dogs than he ever will. Partly because he's a close minded a** and partly because every conference or training we had he would fall asleep or call in sick. I had a HUGE fight with him about pits, I cited so many sources as to why he was full of s**t and he had zero credible sources to back up what he was saying. But the only bright side to that was unlike my boss, he wouldn't turn people away who wanted raw, he would call ME the expert on THAT and refer them to me. Unless the manager was there, she was very much sell sell sell and wanted me to lie to customers about what I feed my own dog so they would buy what we sell. stressed

Hence why I don't work THERE anymore. The people I work with now are so amazing, they pulled me aside today to whisper that this nice lady gets 10% off everything cause she has so many animals, all rescues. Like, talk about actually caring people! Not in it to make money at all.

I wouldn't say it makes you arrogant, but even if it did it doesn't mean that you're wrong. wink

Experience and meaningful knowledge in terms of years means jack, it's possible for someone to have done something incorrectly for 50 years and just as possible for someone with two years experience to outshine them in every way.
