This morning I woke up to 8 tiny little mantises... now I think I count 11! I AM SO EXCITED!!! xd They are SO cute. They are totally already hunting the flightless fruit flies I put in there (good thing because I dropped in far too many. On the side of the cage:  With the Ootheca:  Wish I had a Macro lens. SIGH.

Too cute! I've hatched so many mantis. We used to hike and find the eggs and bring them home put them in jars and watch.

Yay baby mantises. Only thing, is that your egg case on the ground, or do you have it glued to the top of the cage or something?

It felt kind of awkward and unnatural, but they didn't give me the stick it came on and didn't say anything about gluing it on the top. They recommended placing it in a brown lunch sack to hatch, so I figured it was okay. Should it be glued to the top? I imagine it is too late now, but for next time?

I would get it up and hanging immediately and either glue it to a stick or the top of your cage. Look at the angle it is on the twig stuck in the ootheca to get the right angle to hanging it. They normally drop down on threads and use gravity to help break free from their skins. I have never hatched an ootheca from the ground before and if it is laying wrong you could have a lot of deaths. 11 nymphs is super small for a Chinese Mantis ootheca so you will probably be getting another wave of them sometime soon.

COOL! I had so much fun with mine! I wish you luck w/ yours too biggrin
PS my ootheca came that way too (with no sticks) I used a low temp hot glue gun to glue them to sticks and didn't have any problems. Also, mine hatched more than once from each ootheca, so ! bet yours aren't done yet!

I went and snagged a couple photos off the net of a mantis ootheca hanging properly. This photo does a good job of showing the slits. omg, the guild is infested with bugs hahaha. Sometimes I wonder what pets we would have if we never met each other. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have fish had I not had help setting up this tank.

OH MY GOSH, you are SO RIGHT! gonk I just checked on the babies, and the ootheca itself. I am down to 6 living nymphs (who all hungrily ate more fruit flies. SO CUTE.) and there were a bunch of dead ones stuck under the egg sack! I am warming up the low-temp gun RIGHT NOW! I hope I get some more and they survive. I plan to pick the ones that seem healthiest to keep as pets and release the rest.

SO MANY! It's like when Hissers are born! (I just made a new section of my Critters 2 Go site specifically for the kids who buy roaches from me to learn more about them.
